Yankees claimed INF/OF Russ Canzler off waivers from the Indians.

Canzler has now gone from the Indians to the Blue Jays back to the Indians and now to the Yankees in the span of two weeks. The 26-year-old batted just .269/.299/.398 in 97 plate appearances last season but has fared well at Triple-A and could conceivably win a bench spot.

Aledmys Diaz is out of the Cardinals' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Phillies.

Diaz finally got to hit higher than seventh on Wednesday night, serving as the Cardinals' leadoff man in a 5-4 victory, but he'll take a day of rest Thursday versus Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff. Ruben Tejada is playing shortstop and batting eighth.

Maikel Franco is getting a day off Thursday.

The young third baseman is in a 2-for-22 slump, so he'll take a day of mental and physical rest in Thursday afternoon's series finale in St. Louis. Andres Blanco is starting at the hot corner and batting third versus Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia.

According to MLB.com's Mark Bowman, Braves officials "have been forced to at least discuss whether it makes sense to make a managerial change."

No manager can be expected to win with this current Braves roster, but then again nobody expected Fredi Gonzalez to survive the club's aggressive top-to-bottom rebuild. 2016 is Fredi's sixth year on the job and the Braves stand 7-20 on the season after falling 8-0 to the Mets on Wednesday afternoon. It might not be fair, but maybe it is time for something different. Bowman says bullpen coach Eddie Perez would likely be given managerial duties on an interim basis.

Brad Boxberger (abdomen) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment next Thursday.

He'll work a pair of simulated appearances first -- one Friday and one Monday -- at the Rays' spring training complex in Port Charlotte, Florida. Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times says Boxberger is probably going to be asked to make six minor league appearances before the Rays consider activating him from the disabled list. He's been out all season after undergoing core muscle surgery in mid-March. Alex Colome is serving as Tampa Bay's fill-in closer.
May 5 - 9:06 AM

Carlos Correa went 3-for-5 with a homer, a double and three RBI in the Astros' 16-4 rout of the Twins on Wednesday.

Correa was due to bust out with one of these; since hitting two home runs on April 6 he had remained quiet, going 23 straight games without a homer. There was no way American League pitchers were going to keep him down for much longer. He's back up to .276/.388/.469 for the year now.
May 5 - 12:19 AM

Jacoby Ellsbury was perfect on Wednesday night, going 3-for-3 with two walks and two stolen bases against the Orioles.

Ellsbury turned back the clocks and reminded us how dynamic he can be on the baseball diamond. He's now hitting .271/.327/.396 with seven stolen bases. Fantasy owners desperately want the power to return, but the 32-year-old is showing that he can still be an effective fantasy player with a good batting average and the potential for 30-plus steals.
May 4 - 11:12 PM

After being hit on the right elbow by a pitch in Wednesday's win over the Orioles, Brett Gardner's X-rays came back negative.

Gardner was plunked on the elbow in the top of the eighth inning. It actually resulted in an RBI for the run-hungry Yankees, as the bases were loaded at the time. He would stay in the game before being lifted for defensive replacement Dustin Ackley in the ninth. After the win, manager Joe Girardi said that the speedy outfielder was "pretty sore." Consider him day-to-day moving forward unless the Yankees indicate otherwise.
May 4 - 10:41 PM

Russell Martin looped a walk-off single over the head of Nomar Mazara in right field to secure a 4-3 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday.

Martin took reliever Tony Barnette to deep right field with the bases loaded to plate the winning run. It's been a difficult season for the 33-year-old catcher, as he's dealt with neck stiffness that has kept him from playing everyday and has hindered his abilities at the plate. He's hitting .169/.241/.183 and has just one extra-base hit all year, though his walk-off single would've been a double in any other situation.
May 4 - 10:25 PM

Steven Souza exited Wednesday's game against the Dodgers with a pectoral spasm.

Souza whacked a solo home run in the fourth inning for his lone hit in two at-bats. The pectoral issue raised its ugly head several innings later and he was replaced in center field by Kevin Kiermaier in the seventh inning. Per the Rays, Souza's injury is not considered major.
May 4 - 9:37 PM

Corey Kluber twirled a gem with Wednesday's complete-game shutout against the Tigers, striking out seven and scattering five hits.

Kluber spun his wheels out of the gate in 2016, but has been brilliant in his last three starts. He's only allowed three earned runs in his last 24 innings, striking out 23 batters and walking just two. The right-hander benefited from some nifty defense at the hands of Francisco Lindor on Wednesday, but that isn't projected to change anytime soon. In other words, that's a feature, not a bug. Kluber has won two of his last three games and has a 3.35 ERA with a 2.57 FIP in 43 innings. He'll next get the Astros on the road.
May 4 - 8:43 PM

Hanley Ramirez was scratched from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox due to flu-like symptoms.

With Ramirez being scratched late, Travis Shaw shifts over to first from third. Josh Rutledge is the other domino, here, taking Shaw's place at third base. Shaw is hitting sixth and Rutledge is hitting seventh. Consider Ramirez day-to-day moving forward. The Red Sox do not have an off day on Thursday and could give the slugger another day off if he is still feeling queasy in 24 hours.
