Mariano Rivera (knee) plans to begin his offseason throwing program next week.

Rivera is eight months removed from ACL surgery, and says his knee feels about "95 percent." He hasn't reported any setbacks in his rehab and remains on track to be cleared for spring training in February. All signs continue to point towards Rivera being ready for Opening Day, so he should carry considerable fantasy value once again after missing most of 2012.

Mike Leake held the Mets scoreless over seven innings in the Reds' 4-0 victory on Tuesday.

Leake has now made two consecutive starts without allowing a run, lowering his ERA to 3.25 in the process. There was some thought his spot in the rotation might be in danger with the return of Johnny Cueto, but Tony Cingrani being demoted was a vote of confidence in favor of the 25-year-old. His next start will come in an interleague matchup with the Indians on Monday.

When asked prior to Tuesday's game who his closer is, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly replied, "I don't know. We'll see."

Kenley Jansen seemed to be close to overtaking Brandon League for the job, but he then allowed two runs in back-to-back games over the weekend. Mattingly indicated that he'd like to use League in the role, saying he'd "really like to see the bullpen get its confidence back and some semblance of order and get the guys in the roles we designed." Jansen has out-pitched League all season until the last few days and is probably the favorite for the job over the long run. The situation is a headache for fantasy owners.

Kevin Youkilis (back) took three at-bats in an extended spring training game on Tuesday.

It was his first bit of game action since landing on the disabled list with a lumbar spine sprain. Youkilis' recovery has gone slower than expected, but he's finally made some strides. The Yankees haven't revealed a timetable for his return, but early June seems about right.
May 21 - 9:11 PM

Chris Sale has been scratched from Wednesday's scheduled start against the Red Sox due to mild tendinitis in his left posterior shoulder.

It's obviously a tough break for Sale's fantasy owners, but the good news is that the move is viewed as precautionary and he's expected to be ready to start next Tuesday. Hector Santiago will get the ball Wednesday in Sale's place. He'll be pitching on three days' rest.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said it's possible Jered Weaver (elbow) could be activated after his appearance at extended spring training on Wednesday.

That would put him in line to rejoin the rotation early next week, which would be a little earlier than expected. Weaver is coming back from a fractured left (non-throwing) elbow and appears to be fully healed, so it's all about getting his stamina up at this point. The Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin speculates that he could replace Joe Blanton in the rotation.
May 21 - 7:36 PM

Angels manager Mike Scioscia said that Tommy Hanson would "most likely not" start on Saturday in Kansas City.

Hanson has been away from the team since early May due to the death of his step-brother. The Halos were hoping he'd be ready to rejoin the rotation on Saturday, but he needs to get some work in at extended spring training first. The right-hander seems like to return sometime next week.
May 21 - 7:30 PM

Chase Utley was a late scratch from Tuesday's lineup after feeling discomfort in his right side during batting practice.

He'll be re-evaluated on Wednesday before the Phillies determine how much time he might miss. If it's an oblique issue that Utley is dealing with, obviously there's a good chance it could lead to a trip to the disabled list. Freddy Galvis is taking his spot at second base Tuesday.
May 21 - 6:41 PM

Red Sox manager John Farrell said he has considered moving Jacoby Ellsbury out of the leadoff spot.

Ellsbury is down to a .241/.303/.335 batting line after hitting just .179/.256/.218 so far in 18 games this month. Farrell wants to show confidence in his leadoff hitter, though, so he'll remain at the top of the order for. Shane Victorino is an option to replace Ellsbury at the top of the order if the center fielder doesn't pick it up.
May 21 - 6:35 PM

Indians placed 1B Nick Swisher on the paternity leave list.

Swisher's wife gave birth to a girl on Tuesday afternoon. He will be back within the next couple of days.
May 21 - 5:27 PM

Nick Tepesch has been scratched from his Wednesday start due to a blister on his right middle finger.

Ross Wolf will take the mound in his place. Tepesch should be fine by his next turn in the Rangers' rotation.
May 21 - 4:59 PM

Cubs activated RHP Matt Garza from the disabled list.

Garza will make his first start in 10 months for the Cubs on Tuesday night against the Pirates. He looked fairly sharp on his minor league rehab assignment and can be activated immediately in most fantasy leagues. Carlos Villanueva has been pushed into a bullpen role.
