Braves general manager Frank Wren said Sunday that the team has "never closed the door" on re-signing Michael Bourn.

Wren added that if they did bring back Bourn, it would be a "toss up" as to whether he or B.J. Upton would play center field. The reality, of course, is that Bourn's price would have to fall dramatically for him to become a feasible option for the Braves. While the market for Bourn has been slower than expected, he'll almost surely wind up being too expensive for Atlanta.

Indians manager Terry Francona announced Monday that Carlos Carrasco will pitch the second game of the regular season.

Francona also confirmed that Corey Kluber would pitch Opening Day and that Carrasco would be followed by Danny Salazar, Josh Tomlin and Trevor Bauer. Carrasco underwent an MRI on his right elbow earlier this month after he experienced some swelling, but everything came back clean and he threw three scoreless frames in a Cactus League appearance last Friday. The righty has never thrown 200 innings in his career and that's why he doesn't qualify as a fantasy ace, but it doesn't appear the elbow is a concern at all as we approach Opening Day.

Madison Bumgarner yielded two runs over seven innings Monday in a 14-2 victory over the Reds in Cactus League play.

Bumgarner gave up a sacrifice fly and a solo homer in the fifth inning, but otherwise he was on point. The Giants’ ace struck out nine and walked none and also went 1-for-2 with a single and a walk at the plate. Like pretty much everyone, he’s ready for the real games to begin

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Cardinals and Yadier Molina are "making progress" in extension talks and "may be getting closer to a deal."

There's been no word on the potential terms of the contract, although Heyman says Molina has reportedly been looking for a four-year extension, while St. Louis had been offering two years. He's currently set to make $14 million in 2017 before hitting free agency once a mutual option is declined. Molina turns 35 in July and the Cards have top catching prospect Carson Kelly almost ready, so it's possible he won't be an everyday player by the end of the deal. However, he remains one of the best defensive catchers in baseball and is coming off a season when he batted .307/.360/.427.

Jarrod Dyson (hamstring) is hoping to return to Cactus League action on Wednesday.

Dyson has dealt with a right hamstring issue for over a week, although the Mariners have insisted that it's merely fatigue and not any kind of strain. The speedster said he had six hits -- including a home run -- in 10 at-bats in a minor league game Monday. There's been no indication that Dyson is in danger of missing Opening Day.

Orioles released OF Michael Bourn.

Bourn fractured his right ring finger before Grapefruit League contests got underway and won't be game-ready until sometime in April, at least. He requested his release and is now free to sign elsewhere on what's sure to be a minor league contract. Bourn is nothing more than a bit player at this point in his career.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons indicated Monday that Devon Travis (knee) is likely to be ready to play on Opening Day.

"It’s starting to look that way, but nothing definite yet," Gibbons said. Travis didn't make his Grapefruit League debut until last Friday, as he was slow to recover from last November's knee surgery. He figures to receive some extra days off early on in the season, but it sounds like the second baseman will be out their on April 3 in Baltimore.

Royals optioned OF/DH Peter O'Brien to Triple-A Omaha.

O'Brien has been one of the best players in the Cactus League this spring, boasting a 1.127 OPS with seven home runs in 51 at-bats, but he was always a longshot to crack the Opening Day roster. If something goes wrong with Brandon Moss, or the veteran slugger isn't hitting left-handed pitching, look for O'Brien to get the call as DH help.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Monday that Scott Kazmir (hip) will open the season on the disabled list.

Kazmir again struggled with velocity and effectiveness in his return to Cactus League play Sunday versus the Rangers, yielding three earned runs on five walks and three hits over just three innings. "It's something with the hip," Roberts told the media on Monday morning. There is no timetable for Kazmir's 2017 debut.
Mar 27 - 1:09 PM

Tyler Thornburg was scratched from a scheduled Grapefruit League appearance Monday due to an upper right trapezius spasm.

That's not good news for a guy who hasn't pitched in a Grapefruit League game since March 1. He's been working through a dead arm phase, and this trapezius spasm -- even if it turns out to be minor -- will steer him toward the disabled list ahead of Opening Day. Thornburg was acquired from the Brewers in December after registering a brilliant 2.15 ERA with 90 strikeouts in 67 innings last season.

Jeurys Familia is expected to meet with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred on Monday regarding his offseason domestic violence incident.

Familia left Mets camp on Sunday night and flew to New York for the meeting. Manfred is almost certain to levy some sort of suspension on the 27-year-old closer, who was accused (but ultimately not charged) of assaulting his wife on October 31 in New Jersey. Addison Reed is in position to open the 2017 regular season as the Mets' primary ninth-inning man.

Adrian Beltre is out of the Rangers' Cactus League lineup on Monday due to a tight right calf muscle.

Beltre suffered a Grade 1 strain of his left calf early on in Rangers camp. This right calf injury is not considered as serious, but we are just one week from Opening Day. Look for another status update Tuesday.
