Indians signed RHP Jerry Gil to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite. Gil, a converted infielder, had a 4.92 ERA and 51/20 K/BB ratio over 64 innings last season with the Blue Jays' Triple-A affiliate. He will likely function as organizational depth in 2013.

Brett Gardner (knee) remains out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Thursday against the Mariners.

Gardner has apparently made some progress in his recovery from a sore right knee, but he'll sit out for a fifth straight game with the Mariners starting left-hander James Paxton in this matinee tilt at Yankee Stadium. Giancarlo Stanton is in left field and Gary Sanchez is taking a turn at designated hitter.

Aaron Hicks is getting the day off Thursday against the Mariners.

Clint Frazier will start in center field and bat leadoff versus Mariners left-hander James Paxton. This appears to be a routine day of rest for Hicks, who's batting .300/.364/.617 through 66 plate appearances in June.

Jose Altuve went 3-for-4 and crunched two solo home runs to lead his team over the Rays 5-1 on Wednesday.

The second baseman twice went yard against starter Nathan Eovaldi in the contest. His power bat has come alive of late although he is still well behind the pace he set the last two seasons. Everything else is right where his fantasy owners were hoping for on draft day. He leads the majors with a .347 batting average with seven home runs, 39 RBI and 49 runs scored. He has stolen 11 bases in 13 attempts.

Giancarlo Stanton went 2-for-4 and drilled a walk-off, two-run home run against the Mariners on Wednesday.

Didi Gregorius singled with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and Stanton followed with a massive longball way past the center field wall to win the game. Stanton has been hot with the bat lately and has his line up to .255/.329/.504 with 18 homers and 42 RBI on the season.

Shelby Miller (elbow) is likely to join the Diamondbacks' rotation on Monday against the Marlins.

Matt Koch was sent to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, and reliever Jake Barrett was Koch's replacement. That sets things up for Miller to start for the Diamondbacks in Monday's series opener against the Marlins, and it'll be his first start since early 2017 after undergoing Tommy John surgery last April. He owns a 4.66 ERA in four rehab starts, but he's also struck out 28 hitters in 19 1/3 innings. Miller will likely be working on strict pitch and inning counts initially, but when fully healthy, he has at times shown front-line stuff. The 27-year-old is an interesting speculative buy for what remains of the 2018 campaign.
Jun 20 - 7:47 PM

Brandon Belt went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a 6-5 victory over the Marlins on Wednesday.

Belt's RBI came on a ground-rule double, and he had two more singles in the contest. The three hits push his average to .305 on the 2018 campaign, and it's his 35th RBI in 58 games with the Giants. He's looked like the same hitter he was before the emergency appendectomy, and somewhat quietly, he's been one of the best first baseman in all of baseball in 2018.

An MRI revealed that Jay Bruce is dealing with a strain in his right hip.

Bruce was placed on the disabled list on June 19 -- retroactive to June 18 -- after missing four of the past five games with discomfort in his hip and back. Signed to a $39 million, three-year deal in the offseason, Bruce is hitting just .212/.292/.321 with three homers and 17 RBI in 236 plate appearances with the Mets. He's likely going to be sidelined until early July.

Jon Lester limited the Dodgers to five hits over seven scoreless innings Wednesday in the Cubs’ 4-0 victory.

Lester mostly pitched to contact, recording just one strikeout against three walks. Seventy of the left-hander’s season-high 119 pitches went for strikes. Lester only set the Dodgers down in order once—that was his last inning—but managed to keep L.A. off the scoreboard nonetheless (the Dodgers left seven men on base). Lester has pitched to an impressive 1.64 ERA during his five-start winning streak. He’ll look to make it six straight next Tuesday against the same Dodgers team he just beat.

Javier Baez delivered three hits and a stolen base Wednesday in the Cubs’ victory over the Dodgers.

All three of his hits went for extra bases. Baez doubled in the second, doubled and scored in the fifth and tripled and scored in the seventh. He also made a great play in the field, diving to double up Enrique Hernandez at second base in the eighth inning. Baez is in the midst of a breakout season for the Cubs, tying for third in the NL in triples (six) and fifth in steals (13). Don’t be surprised if he represents Chicago at next month’s All-Star Game.

Jose Martinez received treatment on his left shoulder after Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

Martinez hurt the shoulder on an awkward-looking play at first base in which he also appeared to injure his left wrist. He told reporters after the game that he'll see how he feels Thursday, and that he's played through pain before. For now, consider Martinez day-to-day.
Jun 20 - 5:23 PM

Corey Kluber dominated Wednesday, allowing just one hit over seven shutout frames in the Indians’ 12-0 victory over the White Sox.

He racked up seven Ks and only walked one batter. Kluber probably had another inning in him—he left after 95 pitches—but manager Terry Francona played it safe with Cleveland staked to a commanding 11-0 lead. The only hit he gave up came in the second inning when Omar Narvaez plopped a two-out single to left field. The reigning AL Cy Young winner leads the majors with 11 victories and also ranks second in WHIP (0.81) and fifth in ERA (2.10). He gets the Cardinals in his next start Monday at Busch Stadium.
