Cubs signed OF Darnell McDonald to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

McDonald posted a .205/.297/.352 batting line in 103 plate appearances last season between the Red Sox and Yankees. He'll function as outfield depth for the Cubs.

Lorenzo Cain (wrist) is done for the year.

Cain hadn't played since September 9 due to a wrist injury and there's no point in rushing him back for the final few games of the 2016 regular season. The star center fielder finishes with a .287/.339/.408 slash line, nine homers, 56 RBI, and 14 steals over 397 at-bats.

Nick Castellanos (hand) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Wednesday.

Castellanos went 1-for-3 in an instructional league game Monday in Florida and boarded a flight to Detroit after waking up Tuesday morning with no abnormal discomfort in his left hand. He fractured the hand back on August 6 and has been on the DL since. The young third baseman will try to give the Tigers a boost as they make one final push for an American League Wild Card spot.
Sep 27 - 4:37 PM

Steven Matz (elbow, shoulder) is done for the year.

Matz doesn't need shoulder surgery, which is good news, but he will go under the knife for a bone spur in his left elbow. The young southpaw finishes the 2016 campaign with a 3.40 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 129/31 K/BB ratio in 132 1/3 innings. He should be ready for the start of spring training next February.

Devon Travis (shoulder) is considered day-to-day.

Travis got tangled up in Monday night's benches-clearing brawl with the Yankees, suffering an injury to his left shoulder that he then aggravated on a swing later in the game. It's not clear when he might return. Joaquin Benoit also suffered an injury -- a calf tear, to be exact -- in that pointless fracas Monday.
Sep 27 - 4:31 PM

Matt Carpenter (finger) is back in the Cardinals' starting lineup on Tuesday night.

Carpenter has been dealing with a right ring finger injury and sat out of Monday's blowout loss to the Reds, but it's apparently nothing serious. He'll start at first base and bat leadoff Tuesday versus Cincinnati right-hander Robert Stephenson.
Sep 27 - 4:27 PM

Joaquin Benoit has been diagnosed with a torn muscle in his calf.

He won't pitch again in the regular season, but it sounds like the veteran reliever could be an option at some point in October if the Blue Jays are able to make a deep postseason run. Benoit suffered the injury during Monday's benches-clearing fracas with the Yankees. He had registered a fantastic 0.38 ERA in 23 2/3 innings with Toronto.
Sep 27 - 4:22 PM

Nelson Cruz (wrist) is in the Mariners' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Astros.

The MRI taken Monday on his sore left wrist apparently showed nothing of concern. Cruz is starting at DH and batting cleanup versus Astros right-hander Mike Fiers.
Sep 27 - 4:19 PM

Aledmys Diaz is back in the Cardinals' lineup on Tuesday night against the Reds.

Diaz was excused from the club on Monday to visit and mourn with the family of Jose Fernandez in Miami. The two grew up together in Cuba. Diaz will start at shortstop and bat seventh Tuesday versus Reds right-hander Robert Stephenson.
Sep 27 - 4:08 PM

Jason Kipnis is out of the Indians' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Tigers.

Mike Napoli, Jose Ramirez, and Francisco Lindor will also sit after the Indians clinched the American League Central on Monday night. Tigers ace Justin Verlander should dominate this particular Cleveland lineup.
Sep 27 - 4:02 PM

Giants acquired INF Gordon Beckham from the Braves for cash considerations.

Beckham will give the Giants some infield depth this week with Eduardo Nunez and Brandon Crawford banged up, but he will not be eligible for the postseason. The 30-year-old is batting just .217/.300/.354 across 273 plate appearances this season.
Sep 27 - 3:41 PM

Starlin Castro (hamstring) has returned to the Yankees' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

Castro appeared as pinch-hitter during Monday's game and now he's ready to return to the starting lineup. He'll hit cleanup against David Price. The 26-year-old has been out for 10 days with a right hamstring strain.
