Jose Mijares, the agent for Victor Martinez, stated Saturday that his client will be 100 percent healthy for spring training.

Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand issued a similar sentiment on Friday. Martinez, who is recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee, should have very little difficulty regaining his status as one of the elite offensive catchers in the fantasy game. He'll serve as the Tigers' primary DH in 2013.

Cubs placed SS Starlin Castro on the bereavement list.

Castro could be out for up to week after losing a cousin and three close friends in a car crash this week in the Dominican Republic. He left the Cubs on Wednesday.

Cubs placed RHP Edwin Jackson on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain.

Jackson was hammered for seven earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Giants, dropping him to 6-14 on the year with a 6.09 ERA. He is owed $22 million over the next two seasons. This is a mess.

Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) did some light throwing on Thursday afternoon.

It's a nice step in the right direction for the injured third baseman, but the real hurdles for his recovery are going to be baserunning, fielding, and hitting. Zimmerman has been on the disabled list since late July with a Grade 3 hamstring strain and is still probably 3-4 weeks away from returning to the Nats' active roster.

According to ESPN's Jim Bowden, the Rangers will not be trading left-handed reliever Neal Cotts.

Cotts got claimed off revocable waivers earlier this week by an American League Central team, but the move was only made to block contenders from landing him. The 34-year-old southpaw will finish out the season in Texas before hitting the free agent market in November. He owns a 3.48 ERA and 58/20 K/BB ratio in 54 1/3 innings this year.

According to Kiley McDaniel of FanGraphs, the Astros could still strike a deal with No. 1 pick Brady Aiken.

The Astros failed to sign the high school left-hander after drafting him first overall in June because they lowered his bonus offer after finding some problems with his elbow in a pre-signing physical. But McDaniel is hearing from people "close to the negotiation" that the Houston front office might wind up reaching a deal with Aiken around the time of Jacob Nix's grievance hearing. Nix was a fifth-round pick who went unsigned due in large part to the failed Aiken talks. It's MLB's discretion whether to allow these players to sign after the stated July 18 deadline.

Chad Qualls (back) is believed to be unavailable for Thursday's series finale against the Yankees.

Qualls was also on the shelf Wednesday due to lingering discomfort in his back. It's not an issue that is expected to require a 15-day disabled list stint. Jose Veras earned a save in Qualls' place on Wednesday night and could be called on again Thursday afternoon.

Justin Verlander (shoulder) threw a successful 35-pitch bullpen session on Thursday morning.

Verlander then walked into the office of Tigers manager Brad Ausmus and got a high-five, signifying that he will indeed return to the starting rotation this Saturday against the Twins. Verlander owns a rough 4.76 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in 158 2/3 innings this season and is likely to remain a risky fantasy play down the stretch. He's been sidelined since August 11 due to shoulder inflammation.
Aug 21 - 11:15 AM

Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) is scheduled to face live hitters on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

It'll be his first taste of simulated action since being diagnosed with a partially-torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow back in early July. That injury pretty much always leads to Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but Tanaka is trying the rehab route first and having success with it so far. He threw all of his sliders in a 35-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday afternoon. The Japanese ace is aiming to return sometime in September.
Aug 21 - 11:10 AM

Cubs third base prospect Kris Bryant went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk on Wednesday for Triple-A Iowa.

Bryant now leads the minor leagues with 41 home runs, putting up a .336/.444/.684 slash line between Double-A and Triple-A. His bat is ready for the major leagues, but his defense is still a work in progress and his future defensive home remains up in the air. Bryant has MVP potential, and should be up in early 2015.
Aug 21 - 9:12 AM

According to MLB.com's Corey Brock, closer Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) may need a disabled list stint.

Benoit hasn't pitched since last Wednesday due to some crankiness in his right shoulder. Kevin Quackenbush earned his first save of the season on Wednesday night against the Dodgers and is worth grabbing in all mixed fantasy leagues for the stretch run. Shoulder injuries tend to linger, and Quackenbush owns a strong 2.29 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 37/13 K/BB ratio in 39 1/3 innings this year.
Aug 21 - 8:52 AM

Lance Lynn silenced the Reds on Wednesday, tossing seven shutout innings to earn his 14th win of the season.

Lynn limited the Reds to four hits and a pair of walks while striking out five. He is now one win off of the major league lead, and carries a 2.78 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP and a 144/57 K/BB ratio. He'll take the mound next on Tuesday in Pittsburgh.
