Carl Crawford (elbow) has begun a throwing program.

It's the last major step in his lengthy rehabilitation from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Crawford appears to be on track for the start of spring training and will be the Dodgers' starting left fielder on Opening Day if all goes smoothly at camp in Phoenix, Arizona.

Cardinals acquired RHP Justin Masterson from the Indians in exchange for OF James Ramsey.

Masterson has struggled in his walk season, posting a 5.51 ERA over 19 starts. However, he's dealt with a knee issue and the Cards are hopeful that he'll pick things up if that injury is behind him. He should also certainly benefit from a move to the National League. Masterson will make his Cardinals' debut on Saturday against the Brewers.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Cardinals could still go after Jon Lester even after the acquisition of Justin Masterson.

Morosi says that they would have to be willing to give up Shelby Miller to do it. It's certainly possible that the Red Sox have floated this information to Morosi in order to drive up Lester's price with other teams. On the other hand, St. Louis didn't have to surrender any of their top prospects to get Masterson, so we can't rule anything out.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Marlins and Red Sox are discussing a possible John Lackey trade.

The Marlins obviously like the fact that Lackey has a team option of $500,000 for next season. It also doesn't hurt that he's posted a 3.55 ERA over 50 starts since the beginning of last season. It's not clear at this point what kind of package the Marlins might be willing to give up.

MLB.com's Peter Gammons reports that the Dodgers are no longer pursuing Jon Lester, David Price and Cole Hamels.

The Dodgers are refusing to give up Joc Pederson, Corey Seager or Julio Urias in any deal, which makes acquiring one of the aforementioned aces an impossibility. Gammons said they're now focused on adding a back-end starter and bullpen help. With the Cardinals also out of the picture, it appears the Lester market might be down to the Pirates and A's.

Diamondbacks signed LHP Clayton Richard to a minor league contract.

He'll make a start for the Arizona League Diamondbacks this weekend. Richard underwent AC joint surgery last summer and thoracic outlet surgery over the offseason but is finally ready for game action again after a long rehab. He could possibly come up with the D'Backs in September if he looks good in the minors.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets don't expect to trade Bartolo Colon prior to Thursday's deadline.

Puma says the Mets aren't willing to eat any of the $13 million owed to Colon, which conflicts with what Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reported last week (he said they'd be willing to eat $2 million). CBS Sports' Jon Heyman noted Tuesday that there "doesn't appear to be a great market" for Colon. The Royals, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Pirates and Braves have been connected to the righty.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin has ruled Coco Crisp (neck) out through Friday.

Crisp will receive treatment on his ailing neck when the A's return home Friday and will not play that night. It's totally up in the air at this point as to when he'll rejoin the lineup, but Oakland is optimistic that he'll avoid a stint on the disabled list.
Jul 30 - 12:48 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that there is a "very good chance" the Red Sox trade John Lackey in addition to Jon Lester.

The Red Sox have a $500,000 club option on Lackey for 2015 that's as a result of his 2012 Tommy John surgery, so while he might not bring as much as Lester, you can understand why he's sought after. The righty boasts a 3.60 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 116/32 K/BB ratio over 137 1/3 innings this season. Rosenthal says the Indians and Marlins are interested in Lackey. The Royals have previously been reported to have interest.
Jul 30 - 12:31 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Dodgers are interested in Joaquin Benoit, but the Padres "would prefer not to trade him within division, if they trade him at all."

It's a little silly, given that San Diego is unlikely to contend before Benoit's contract expires. The 37-year-old has taken over as closer for the Padres following the trade of Huston Street and is under contract for $8 million next season and has an $8 million vesting option for 2016.

Jayson Werth is back in the Nationals' lineup Wednesday.

Werth didn't start Tuesday after exiting Monday's contest with a sprained ankle, but he was able to pinch-hit and is now ready to re-enter the lineup. The outfielder sports a .283/.375/.444 batting line with 12 homers and 58 RBI over 101 games this season.
Jul 30 - 10:17 AM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Orioles are interested in the Astros' Dallas Keuchel and Jarred Cosart.

The O's don't want to give up one of their better pitching prospects for a rental like Jon Lester and instead are focused more on players that they'd control longer. Both Keuchel and Cosart have yet to reach arbitration, so they'd fit the bill. The Orioles have also dealt with the Astros in the past, having acquire Bud Norris at the deadline last season.
