Marlins re-signed OF Austin Kearns to a minor league contract.

He'll receive an invitation to spring training. Kearns batted an acceptable .245/.366/.367 with four homers over 87 games last season for the Fish and hit .325 (13-for-40) as a pinch-hitter. He could wind up with some playing time in left field, where the Marlins' current projected starter is Juan Pierre.

Mark Teixeira hit a pair of two-run homers off of Jacob deGrom in Saturday's 6-1 win over the Mets.

Teixeira hit his home runs in the first and third innings before quieting. He finished the contest 2-for-4 with four RBI. The veteran first baseman has shown fantastic power through the first three weeks, with seven home runs and 17 driven in. As good as he's been with the power-stick, he's been just as mediocre in his average, thus leading to a crescendo of a slash-line: .218/.333/.673. The average is never coming back, but if he stays healthy, he could be in for his best home run season since hitting 24 back in 2012. Of course, the "if" on the health aspect in the equation is a big "if."

Anthony Rizzo filled up the box score in Friday's 7-3 extra-inning victory over the Reds, going 3-for-4 with a double, homer and two RBI.

Rizzo also drew a walk, scored a pair of runs and swiped his fourth base of the season. His two-run shot off Mike Leake got the Cubs on the board in the fourth inning. He's off to a terrific start at the dish this season, slashing .345/.493/.509 with two long balls and seven RBI.

Michael Pineda pitched 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball in Friday's 6-1 win over the Mets, allowing just five hits and striking out seven.

The Yankees made things easy for their pitcher, as they jumped on Jacob deGrom for six runs through the first three innings. Pineda took full advantage. He struck out seven and the only run he allowed came via a Lucas Duda sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. The outing lowered Pineda's ERA to 3.92. Far more impressive is his sterling 27/2 K/BB ratio over 25 2/3 innings. Yet again, he showed pinpoint control, throwing 78 of his 100 pitches for strikes. Needless to say, he didn't walk a batter. Gone are the sizzling fastball and cover-your-eyes slider from Pineda's Mariner days, but his control has allowed him to compensate for the slight drop-off in pure stuff. Next up, a Wednesday afternoon date with the Rays.

Brandon Moss blasted a pair of homers and drove home seven runs on Friday, powering the Indians in a 13-1 thrashing of the Tigers in Detroit on Friday.

Moss got the scoring started with a two-run double off Shane Greene in the first inning. He then clubbed a three-run shot off Alex Wilson in the fifth and for good measure added a two-run bomb off Al Albuquerque in the ninth. With the three-hit attack, he's now hitting .214/.327/.524 with three long balls and nine RBI on the season.
Apr 24 - 10:26 PM

Danny Salazar delivered another impressive outing in Friday's victory over the Tigers, racking up 11 strikeouts over seven innings of one-run ball.

Salazar became the first Tribe hurler since 1970 to record ten or more strikeouts in each of his first two April starts. He allowed just six hits and three walks on the night, with the only blemish against him on a solo home run off the bat of Nick Castellanos. He'll look to continue his dominance on Wednesday against the Royals.

Mariners placed RHP Hisashi Iwakuma on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 21, with a strained lat muscle.

Iwakuma was scheduled to start on Sunday, though it's unclear at the moment who will fill in for him. He posted a troublesome 6.61 ERA and 1.40 WHIP awhile allowing five home runs over 16 1/3 innings in his first three starts. The M's hope to have him back in the rotation in late-May.

TR Sullivan of MLB.com reports that the Rangers are close to acquiring Josh Hamilton from the Angels.

A return to the Rangers is one destination that seems to make sense, though Sullivan notes that there remains a lot of work to be done before a trade is officially announced, which may not happen until Monday. Reports from SI.com and Ken Rosenthal first noted that the Angels and Hamilton were close to parting ways. The Halos will surely have to pick up a large portion of the $83 million remaining on Hamilton's contract.
Apr 24 - 6:04 PM

Ben Zobrist (knee) is back in the Athletics' lineup Friday.

It's his first start since he hurt his left knee during Sunday's game. Zobrist is being used in the designated hitter spot Friday but should be ready to play the field soon.
Apr 24 - 5:14 PM

Michael Saunders (knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Saturday.

The Blue Jays had been considering bringing him back Friday, but with the Rays sending a lefty (Drew Smyly) to the mound, it made sense to wait another day. Saunders got a late start to the season after having minor knee surgery, but he's an interesting fantasy option in deeper leagues with Rogers Centre as his new home.
Apr 24 - 4:57 PM

Jose Bautista (shoulder) is likely to return to the lineup at some point over the weekend.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said that Bautista's sore right shoulder is improving rapidly to the point that he's ruled out the possibility of a disabled list stint. The club will ease the outfielder back into things in the designated hitter spot initially before eventually returning him to the field.
Apr 24 - 4:54 PM

Omar Infante (groin) is back in the Royals' lineup Friday.

Infante hadn't played since straining his left groin on Sunday. The veteran infielder is sporting an ugly .250/.244/.350 batting line in the early going this season.
