V-Mart (knee) won't catch in 2013

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said on MLB Network Radio on Wednesday that Victor Martinez (knee) will not catch at all in 2013.

V-Mart missed all of 2012 while recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL and is expected to serve as the club's primary designated hitter in 2013. Meanwhile, Alex Avila and Brayan Pena will handle catching duties. Fortunately Martinez is still catcher-eligible in most fantasy leagues, though his value will likely take a big hit going into 2014.

Salvador Perez lands on the bereavement list

Royals placed C Salvador Perez on the bereavement list.

Perez lost his maternal grandmother this weekend and will be out for at least the next three days. The Royals are calling up Adam Moore to provide depth behind the plate.

Detwiler (back) cleared to start on Tuesday

Ross Detwiler (back) threw a bullpen session Saturday and reported feeling fine.

Detwiler was pulled from a start last week with lower back spasms and skipped a turn in the Nationals' rotation. That bit of rest did the trick, and he has been cleared to take the mound Tuesday against the Orioles.

Yankees officially place Granderson on DL

Yankees placed OF Curtis Granderson on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured fifth metacarpal of his left hand.

Granderson suffered the injury when he was hit by a pitch in the fifth inning of Friday night’s game. It's a troubling development for the Yankees, who will now be forced to give extended playing time to Ichiro Suzuki and Brennan Boesch. Granderson is expected to miss a minimum of four weeks.

Weaver (elbow) expected to return Wednesday

Jered Weaver (elbow) is expected to start Wednesday against the Dodgers.

Weaver, on the disabled list since April 9, will throw a bullpen session Sunday before he's cleared to rejoin the Angels. The Los Angeles Times expects Joe Blanton to lose his rotation spot when Weaver returns.

Keppinger has walk-off single vs. Marlins

Jeff Keppinger delivered a walk-off RBI single in a 4-3 win over the Marlins in 11 innings on Friday.

Keppinger sneaked it through the left side of the infield with the bases loaded to win it. The veteran infielder went 2-for-5 with two RBI on the night and is hitting .343 (11-for-32) over his last nine games. The recent hot streak has only pulled his batting average up to .210 for the year, but we expect it to continue to rise in the days ahead.

Braves/Mets game suspended due to rain

Friday's game between the Braves and Mets was suspended due to rain.

The Mets tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth inning before there was a rain delay going into the top of the ninth. Play will resume Saturday at 6:10 p.m. ET after which the second game of the series will be played.

Jim Henderson suffers right hamstring injury

Jim Henderson is dealing with a right hamstring injury.

No word yet on the extent of the injury, or how much time he could be sidelined, but Henderson didn't sound very encouraged when talking with reporters after the game. He said that the injury occurred while attempting to field a ground ball off the bat of Russell Martin. Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said that if Henderson were to miss time, he would employ a closer-by-committee including Francisco Rodriguez, John Axford and Michael Gonzalez.

Chris Young powers Athletics past Astros

Chris Young launched a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning in Friday's 6-5 win over the Astros.

The clutch blast capped a big night for the Houston native, as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Young is batting just .189 through 28 games this season, but he still has produced five home runs, 19 RBI, five stolen bases and 15 runs scored. He's worth considering in deeper mixed fantasy leagues.

John Lackey fans eight in victory over Tribe

John Lackey twirled a gem in Friday’s victory over the Indians, allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings.

Lackey matched his season high with eight strikeouts while walking three. He’s been extremely impressive through his first seven starts on the season, posting a 2.72 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 40/11 K/BB ratio over 39 2/3 innings. He’ll look to carry the momentum over from this strong outing when he does battle against the Phillies in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

Chris Davis hits MLB-leading 16th homer

Chris Davis went 3-for-4 with his major league-leading 16th homer in a win over the Blue Jays on Friday.

The home run was a solo shot. Davis cooled down a bit after his ridiculous start to the season, but now he's red-hot once again. The 27-year-old slugger has gone deep in three straight games and five out of his last seven. Meanwhile, his batting line sits at a ridiculous .337/.426/.723 through 47 games. We could be witnessing a true breakout here.

Phelps diagnosed with right forearm contusion

David Phelps was diagnosed with a right forearm contusion.

Phelps was removed from his start against the Rays in the eighth inning on Friday after being drilled on the forearm by a line drive. However, X-rays ruled out anything serious. It sounds like he'll be fine to make his next scheduled start against the Mets, but Ivan Nova is a candidate to replace him if the Yankees decide to play it safe.
