Red Sox designate Carpenter for assignment

Red Sox designated RHP Chris Carpenter for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Mike Napoli on the 40-man roster. Carpenter, who was acquired from the Cubs last offseason as compensation for Theo Epstein, missed a large part of last season following elbow surgery and posted a 9.00 ERA in eight appearances with the big club. The hard-throwing right-hander figures to draw interest on waivers.

Clay Buchholz scratched from Monday start

Clay Buchholz has been scratched from his start Monday against the Phillies.

Buchholz is dealing with a right collarbone injury and won't pitch on Monday as a precautionary measure. As of now, no MRI is scheduled and Buchholz hopes to return later in the week. The Red Sox will call up Alfredo Aceves to start in his place.

Colon goes seven scoreless against Houston

Bartolo Colon tossed seven scoreless innings Sunday in the A's 6-2 defeat of the Astros.

Colon yielded nine hits, but they were all singles and he was able to avoid any true damage. He did not issue a walk and struck out nine while improving to 5-2 with a 3.82 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. The White Sox are up next.

Jim Johnson blows another one in loss to Jays

Jim Johnson had another meltdown Sunday, coughing up a three-run lead in a loss to the Blue Jays.

Johnson allowed a double and two singles before finally recording his first out. After a walk and a fielder's choice set the stage with two out and the bases loaded, the light-hitting Munenori Kawasaki lined one into the left-center field gap to plate the final two runs. After converting 35 straight saves dating back to last season, Johnson has now blown four out of his last five chances. Manager Buck Showalter will probably stick with his closer for now, but Johnson owners should pick up Darren O'Day just in case.

Chris Perez leaves game with pain in shoulder

Chris Perez left Sunday's game against the Red Sox with right shoulder discomfort.

Perez allowed three walks, a double and a single in the bottom of the ninth inning before exiting with a trainer. If it's something that requires a trip to the disabled list, the Indians would probably be forced to try Joe Smith in the ninth-inning role. Vinnie Pestano has been next in line for saves behind Perez in the past, but he's having his own set of struggles at the moment.

Detwiler has setback, lands on disabled list

Nationals placed LHP Ross Detwiler on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 16, with an oblique injury.

Detwiler threw a bullpen session Saturday and was expected to start Tuesday against the Orioles, but is now dealing with a setback. The Nationals have yet to name who will take his spot in the starting rotation, but left-hander Xavier Cedeno has been called up to replace Detwiler on the active roster.

Cobb goes eight-plus as Rays defeat Yankees

Alex Cobb held the Yankees to two earned runs over 8 1/3 innings Sunday in the Rays' 8-3 win.

Cobb had a shutout going until the Yanks rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth inning. Cobb wound up allowing just five total hits while striking out eight and walking none. He's now 6-2 with a 2.66 ERA and 1.06 WHIP in 67 2/3 innings this season, and he's striking out batters at a rate far greater than expected. The 25-year-old right-hander will look to keep rolling next week against the Indians.

Strasburg dominates for eight, Nats top Phils

Stephen Strasburg threw eight innings of one-run ball Sunday in the Nationals' 6-1 defeat of the Phillies.

Strasburg was brilliant in out-dueling the Phillies' Cole Hamels, fanning nine batters without issuing a walk. He gave up only five hits -- all of which were all singles -- and allowed the Phillies' lone run on a balk. Tyler Clippard closed it out with a clean ninth inning. Strasburg will carry a fantastic 2.49 ERA and 1.06 WHIP into his next scheduled start against the Braves.

Beltran (shoulder) not in Sunday's lineup

Carlos Beltran is not playing Sunday due to left shoulder soreness.

It doesn't appear to be a major issue, but the Cardinals don't want to push it. Allen Craig is playing right field Sunday, while Matt Carpenter is covering first base.

Santiago Casilla to undergo knee surgery

Santiago Casilla will undergo surgery this week to have a cyst removed from his right knee.

It's not clear at this point how long the operation will sideline him. Casilla has been battling the ailment since last season and the pain finally became too much to deal with. It's a blow to the Giants' bullpen depth, but they should be OK.

Angel Pagan (hamstring) not in lineup Sunday

Angel Pagan is not in Sunday's lineup due to a mild hamstring strain.

Pagan actually felt the injury before his game-winning, inside-the-park homer. The Giants are just playing it safely and are hopeful that he'll be ready to go on Monday.

Kennedy (finger) scratched from Monday start

Ian Kennedy has been scratched from Monday's start due to a cut on his right index finger.

Kennedy suffered the cut while doing dishes. The hope is that he'll be ready to take the ball on Friday instead. Tyler Skaggs will be recalled to start the first game of Monday's doubleheader against the Rangers.
