CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Travis Hafner and Jim Thome are among free agent hitters being considered by the Indians.

The Indians declined Hafner's $13 million option for 2013 in October, but they aren't against bringing him back at a lesser salary. The 42-year-old Thome, who played for the Indians from 1991-2002 and again 2011, is working out in hopes of getting a worthwhile offer. Heyman hears that there has been some buzz about a possible reunion with Manny Ramirez, but one person familiar with the Indians' thinking said that he's not a consideration at this point.

Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press hears that the Brewers have expressed interest in Tigers veteran Justin Verlander.

The first-place Brewers could use another starting pitcher and the Tigers would probably eat some cash to grab some of the top young talent in Milwaukee's system. Verlander is owed around $60 million and has posted a disappointing 4.54 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 117 innings this season, though he was very good in 2016. Fenech adds that the Cubs, who just acquired Jose Quintana from the White Sox, are "still monitoring" the Verlander market. Houston's interest is said to be "minimal."

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that Addison Reed is "attracting the most interest of any of the Mets' trade chips."

That's no real surprise given that Reed has posted a stellar 2.40 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 47/5 K/BB ratio in 45 innings this season and New York's other chips are Lucas Duda, Asdrubal Cabrera, and T.J. Rivera. There's known to be serious interest from the Red Sox and Brewers, along with a half-dozen other teams. Reed, a free-agent-to-be, would make sense as a bullpen rental for any contender.

According to Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers "remain in the mix" for Orioles closer Zach Britton.

They're also discussing a possible Justin Wilson trade with the Tigers. Los Angeles already has one of the top closers in baseball in Kenley Jansen, but Britton (or Wilson) would be lethal in a late-inning left-handed setup role. Britton, under contractual control through 2018, boasts a ridiculous 1.41 ERA over his last 224 innings dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season. He also has 125 saves in that span.

Mariners acquired RHP David Phelps from the Marlins for OF Brayan Hernandez, RHP Brandon Miller, RHP Pablo Lopez, and RHP Lukas Schiraldi.

Word of the deal was first reported late Wednesday night by MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. It just took a little while longer for the Marlins to pick through the Mariners' minor league system. Phelps will work as a setup man in Seattle for young closer Edwin Diaz, and it should be a good fit. The 30-year-old right-hander boasts a 2.69 ERA and 11.1 K/9 in 133 2/3 innings since the beginning of the 2016 season and he's averaging a career-best 94.4 mph on his fastball this summer. Phelps will be arbitration-eligible in 2018 with free agency coming in 2019.

Jon Morosi of MLB Networks reports that talks are "heating up" between the Astros and Athletics on a Sonny Gray trade.

Morosi notes, however, that the Astros are also talking to the Tigers about a possible package for both Justin Verlander and Justin Wilson. Gray, 27, has rebounded this season with a strong 3.66 ERA, 1.176 WHIP, and 85/28 K/BB ratio in 91 innings, after finishing with a 5.69 ERA over 117 innings in 2016. He is under contractual control through 2019.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports there are three teams "in on" Marlins closer A.J. Ramos.

Miami is just about to trade setup man David Phelps, and Ramos could very well follow him out the door. The 30-year-old right-hander has struggled a bit in 2017, but he boasts a 2.81 career ERA and 10.5 career K/9, and he's racked up 89 saves since the beginning of the 2015 season. Ramos is under control, via arbitration, through 2018.

J.D. Martinez (hand) is not in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup on Thursday.

Martinez got hit by a pitch Wednesday in his second-ever at-bat with Arizona and suffered a left hand contusion. X-rays turned up negative, so he should be good to go in a day or two. Chris Herrmann is starting in right field and Daniel Descalso is in left field on Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Taijuan Walker on the paternity leave list.

Patrick Corbin is starting in Walker's place on Thursday afternoon against the Reds. The right-hander should be back with the Diamondbacks sometime this weekend, after welcoming a child into the world.
Jul 20 - 10:20 AM

Xander Bogaerts (hand) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Bogaerts missed a couple of games with a small sprain of a joint in his right hand. He is starting at shortstop and hitting sixth on Thursday afternoon versus Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano.
Jul 20 - 10:10 AM

Ryan Braun (calf, wrist) remains out of the Brewers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon.

It's the second straight absence for Braun, who's battling some calf and wrist soreness. These aren't new ailments. Hernan Perez will start in left field and bat fifth versus Pirates right-hander Jameson Taillon.

Zack Cozart went 4-for-6 with a home run and two RBI in an extra-inning, 4-3 win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

He started things off with an RBI single in the first inning and busted a solo home run in the third frame off starter Zack Greinke. The veteran shortstop has always been a wizard in the field but this is the first season he has excelled at the dish. He was the National League starter at shortstop in his first All Star game last week. He is a free agent at the end of this season and is a prime candidate to be traded before the end of the month. He is batting .321/.400/.566 with 11 home runs, 38 RBI and 45 runs scored in 70 games.
