Marlins signed RHP Kevin Slowey to a minor league contract.

The deal presumably includes a spring training invite, where he could be in the mix for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Slowey posted a 5.14 ERA and 34/13 K/BB ratio over 49 innings with the Indians' Triple-A affiliate in 2012 and missed a large chunk of the season with a stress fracture in his rib cage. The 28-year-old has a 4.66 ERA over five seasons in the majors.

Rockies activated SS Trevor Story from the 10-day disabled list.

As indicated Rockies manager Bud Black, Story will return to finish out the series in Philadelphia. The 24-year-old was batting just .180/.289/.396 through 33 games prior to landing on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain earlier this month. The Rockies and fantasy owners will have to hope that the time away did him some good.

Brett Gardner is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Royals.

Gardner hit another homer on Monday, but he'll take a seat Tuesday against left-hander Danny Duffy. Aaron Hicks will start in left field and bat second.
May 23 - 3:25 PM

Mariners activated 2B Robinson Cano from the 10-day disabled list.

Cano is a welcome sight for the Mariners, who have lost three in a row. The veteran second baseman has been out since May 10 with a right quad strain. He returns to a .296/.362/.533 batting line with eight homers and 28 RBI over 34 games.
May 23 - 3:07 PM

Red Sox purchased the contract of 1B Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket.

The Red Sox sent down Hector Velazquez to clear a spot on the active roster. Travis got off to a slow start in April, but he was batting .333/.389/.561 with three home runs and 13 RBI this month. He's likely to see most of his at-bats against left-handers in his first stint in the majors.
May 23 - 2:52 PM

Carlos Santana will make another start in right field Tuesday against the Reds.

Santana had quite the scare in right field on Monday, but fortunately he's fine. He'll move back to first base on Wednesday when the series shifts to Cleveland.
May 23 - 2:49 PM

Asdrubal Cabrera (thumb) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Tuesday with High-A Binghamton.

Cabrera presumably won't need much time before he's deemed ready to return. The veteran shortstop has been sidelined since May 13 due to a lingering injury to his left thumb. Jose Reyes has been handling the bulk of the shortstop duties with Cabrera on the shelf.
May 23 - 2:32 PM

Craig Mish of Fantasy Sports Radio reports that the Padres are calling up prospect right-hander Dinelson Lamet.

The expectation, according to Mish, is that Lamet will make his major league debut Thursday against the Mets. The 24-year-old owns a 3.23 ERA and 50/20 K/BB ratio in 39 innings over eight starts with Triple-A El Paso this season. The walks are a concern and some have speculated that he could be bullpen-bound in the long-term, but he has shown an ability to miss bats. He could be worth a try in deeper fantasy formats.
May 23 - 1:38 PM

Zack Greinke held the White Sox to one run over 8 2/3 innings Monday in the Diamondbacks' 5-1 win.

Greinke nearly had a complete game, but manager Torey Lovullo lifted the right-hander after Jose Abreu doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth. Greinke was brilliant, yielding just four hits and striking out 12 batters against just one walk. He's now 6-2 on the year with a 2.82 ERA and he leads all National League pitchers in strikeouts with 78. A road start against the Brewers is next.
May 23 - 12:28 AM

Paul Goldschmidt finished 2-for-4 with a home run in the Diamondbacks' defeat of the White Sox on Monday.

Goldschmidt singled and scored on Daniel Descalso's three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth inning before popping Miguel Gonzalez for a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth. The star first baseman is batting .315/.448/.580 with 11 home runs, 35 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 38 runs scored in 46 games this season for Arizona.
May 23 - 12:22 AM

Ken Giles nailed down his 12th save of the season Monday in the Astros' 1-0 defeat of the Tigers.

Giles struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning to finish off a combined shutout that was initiated by Brad Peacock's terrific spot start. Giles has a 3.44 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 23/7 K/BB ratio in 18 1/3 innings this season, and he's 12-for-13 in save opportunities for the American League West-leading Astros.
May 22 - 11:50 PM

Mark Melancon recorded his ninth save of the season Monday in the Giants' 6-4 win over the Cubs.

Melancon gave up a two-out single to Javier Baez but fanned Ian Happ to seal the victory for San Francisco. The veteran closer is 3-for-3 in save opportunities since coming off the disabled list May 17. He has a 2.63 ERA and 11/1 K/BB ratio in 13 2/3 total innings this year.
