According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, a "reliable major league source with knowledge of the Mets' plans" wouldn't rule out the possibility that the club could pursue free agent outfielder Michael Bourn.

This is quite a contrast to what we heard earlier this month, as Mets general manager Sandy Alderson has previously said that he doesn't want to give up the team's first-round pick to sign a free agent. While the Mets could use a quality outfielder and the market for Bourn hasn't developed as expected, it would be a surprise if the two sides became a match.

Jon Lester departed his start Thursday against the Reds due to left lat tightness.

Lester called for a trainer after throwing 40 pitches in a brutal second inning that saw the Reds post nine runs -- seven of which were charged to the veteran southpaw. Lester might not be able to take his next turn in the Cubs' rotation and could even require a disabled list stint. He'll be reevaluated on Friday.

Mets placed INF Jose Reyes on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain.

It's not considered a serious strain, so Reyes could be ready for activation as soon as his 10 days are up. Gavin Cecchini and Matt Reynolds have both been called up from Triple-A Las Vegas to provide the Mets with badly-needed infield depth.

Yankees recalled 1B Tyler Austin from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Austin fractured his left foot in February and then promptly strained his hamstring when the Yankees promoted in late June, but the 25-year-old first baseman had been hitting the ball well at Triple-A over the last couple of weeks and has earned another callup before the expansion of MLB rosters in September. That said, it's not clear how much he's going to play in New York.

Jose Ramirez was removed from Thursday's game against the Twins after taking a pitch off his right forearm.

Twins starter Kyle Gibson plunked Ramirez with a 93.1 mph fastball in the top of the second inning. Giovanny Urshela entered to run the bases and handle the hot corner for the Tribe. There should be an injury update soon from Minnesota's Target Field.

Yasmany Tomas has experienced another setback with his right groin.

He's off to Philadelphia to meet with a specialist. Tomas has been out since the first week of June and there is obviously no timetable for his return at this point. He could very well be done for the year. Tomas, 26, is owed $13.5 million in 2018, $15.5 million in 2019, and $17 million in 2020.

Diamondbacks activated OF David Peralta from the paternity leave list.

Peralta is starting in right field and batting leadoff on Thursday afternoon against the Astros after missing a couple of games following the birth of his daughter. The 30-year-old outfielder is slashing .303/.359/.470 in 383 at-bats this season.

Trevor Rosenthal will be examined by the Cardinals' medical staff for renewed tightness in his right arm.

Rosenthal was pulled from a save chance Wednesday night against the Red Sox after giving up a homer and a walk to the first two batters he faced. His fastball velocity was way down and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny noted in his postgame press conference that "something didn't look right." This comes with frustrating timing, as Rosenthal had recaptured ninth-inning duties in St. Louis this summer alongside a career-best strikeout rate. Seung Hwan Oh, Tyler Lyons, and John Brebbia could all see saves down the stretch if Rosenthal is badly injured. Oh is probably the best fantasy stash of the group.

Kevin Kiermaier (hip) is eyeing a return this weekend, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Kiermaier is just 1-for-15 through four rehab games at High-A Charlotte, but if he feels good after playing a full nine innings of center field on Thursday it sounds like the Rays might activate him from the disabled list ahead of Friday's series opener against the visiting Mariners. Kiermaier has been on the shelf since early June because of a fractured hip. He also came down with a minor back issue in late July.

Elvis Andrus went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, four RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base as the Rangers pounded the Tigers 12-6 on Wednesday.

He also walked in the game just for good measure. The shortstop homered in the fifth, drove in two runs with a single in the sixth and added another RBI single in the seventh. Andrus is having by far his best season at the plate. Today's homer doubled his previous career high of eight set last year. He has a .299 batting average with 16 homers, 76 runs, 64 RBI and 23 stolen bases. He's playing the role of kingmaker in some fantasy leagues this year.
Aug 17 - 1:43 AM

Anthony Rizzo belted a grand slam against the Reds and finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI in a 7-6 win on Wednesday.

His bases-loaded blast in the first inning gave the Cubs a big lead before starter Homer Bailey had recorded a single out in the contest. He doubled and scored in the third frame. The veteran first baseman is slashing .265/.385/.513 with 28 home runs, 80 RBI, 69 runs and seven steals. This is likely to be his fourth consecutive season with 30-plus dingers.
Aug 17 - 12:57 AM

Charlie Morton punched out nine batters while allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings to earn a 9-5 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

He held Arizona to three knocks, although he did issue four bases-on-balls and it took him 107 pitches to get 19 outs. Morton is sporting extra velocity this year and it has boosted his strikeout rate to levels he has never displayed before. He is now 10-5 with a 3.69 ERA through 18 starts. He has 119 strikeouts and 42 walks in 107 1/3 innings.
