Braves acquired OF Justin Upton and 3B Chris Johnson from the Diamondbacks for 3B Martin Prado, RHP Randall Delgado, SS Nick Ahmed, RHP Zeke Spruill and 1B Brandon Drury.

Upton was dangled in trade talks for the past couple of years and the Diamondbacks finally decided to pull the trigger this winter. He will start in left field in Atlanta -- next to his brother B.J. in center and Jason Heyward in right. Upton, 25, has hit .284/.363/.481 with 48 home runs, 155 RBI and 39 stolen bases over the last two seasons. He boasts the upside of a perennial MVP candidate.

Nomar Mazara singled and ripped a go-ahead, solo homer in the eighth inning of Monday's win over the Blue Jays.

Mazara drilled a Gavin Floyd offering over the center field wall to lead off the frame and then helped hold the lead when he threw Michael Saunders out at the plate in the bottom of the inning. The 21-year-old is now sporting a .333/.386/.486 batting line over his first 72 major league at-bats. It's really difficult at this point to see the Rangers sending Mazara down when Shin-Soo Choo (calf) returns.

Tyler Skaggs will be shut down from throwing for another week after being diagnosed with biceps tendinitis.

Skaggs recently came down with some shoulder tightness while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. The southpaw will be reevaluated in a week, after which he could be cleared to resume a throwing program. He's still a ways off from joining the Angels.

Trevor Plouffe (intercostal) is set to be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Plouffe, who went down with a right intercostal strain in mid-April, went 1-for-8 over two minor league rehab games with High-A Fort Myers. He was batting .302 (13-for-43) with two homers and an .868 OPS over 12 games prior to the injury.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe hears from a source that Pablo Sandoval faces "significant" surgery on his left shoulder.

The Red Sox have yet to announce the details of the surgery, but Abraham hears that the "odds are against" Sandoval playing this season. The Red Sox haven't missed him in the early part of the season, as Travis Shaw has taken advantage of regular playing time at third base by batting .322/.390/.533 over 25 games. For what it's worth, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that Sandoval's contract with the Red Sox is not insured. The first two years of his contract have been a disaster.
May 2 - 8:13 PM

Domingo Santana was scratched from Monday's lineup against the Angels with right shoulder tightness.

It's probably safe to call him day-to-day. Alex Presley will start in his place in right field and hit leadoff.
May 2 - 7:03 PM

Reds placed C Devin Mesoraco on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 28, with a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Brutal news for Mesoraco, who was hoping to rebound after being limited to 23 games last season due to a torn labrum in his hip. It's unclear how long he'll be sidelined or if surgery will be required, but he'll obviously be facing a lengthy absence. Tucker Barnhart will likely handle the bulk of the catching duties for now.
May 2 - 6:42 PM

Dodgers right-hander Josh Ravin has been suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

The story was first reported by Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. Ravin tested positive for Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide 2. The 28-year-old was already on the 60-day disabled list after breaking his left (non-throwing) arm in a car accident during spring training. He's the third player to receive a PED suspension in the past two weeks, joining Dee Gordon and Chris Colabello.
May 2 - 6:36 PM

Angel Pagan will miss a minimum of 4-5 days with a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring.

Pagan strained his hamstring while running the bases on Sunday. As of now, he's expected to avoid the disabled list. The Giants will go with a combination of Mac Williamson and Gregor Blanco in left field while he's sidelined.
May 2 - 6:04 PM

Carlos Gomez (ribs) did some baseball activity on Monday.

It's good news for Gomez, who will miss his third straight game Monday with soreness in his left rib cage. Astros manager A.J. Hinch is optimistic that he'll be able to return during the team's series against the Twins this week.
May 2 - 5:37 PM

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said that Jason Heyward is out of Monday's lineup with a sore right wrist.

There's no indication that it's serious, but it provides more context on his struggles. The high-priced outfielder went 0-for-17 on the team's recent homestand and is batting just .211/.317/.256 overall.
May 2 - 5:28 PM

Lance McCullers (shoulder) threw 62 pitches over 4 2/3 innings Monday in an extended spring training game.

McCullers will still have to make it through a bullpen session, but the expectation is that he'll resume a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday. It's unclear how many starts he'll need before joining the Astros. His rehab from shoulder discomfort already had to be put on hold once.
