Braves acquired OF Justin Upton and 3B Chris Johnson from the Diamondbacks for 3B Martin Prado, RHP Randall Delgado, SS Nick Ahmed, RHP Zeke Spruill and 1B Brandon Drury.

Upton was dangled in trade talks for the past couple of years and the Diamondbacks finally decided to pull the trigger this winter. He will start in left field in Atlanta -- next to his brother B.J. in center and Jason Heyward in right. Upton, 25, has hit .284/.363/.481 with 48 home runs, 155 RBI and 39 stolen bases over the last two seasons. He boasts the upside of a perennial MVP candidate.

Yadier Molina (thumb) took light swings on Wednesday.

It was far from an intensive workout, but those were the first swings that Molina had attempted since tearing a ligament in his right thumb July 9 on a slide into third base. He has already been catching bullpen sessions and taking infield practice, and the hope is that he'll be ready to rejoin the Cardinals around the second week of September. A.J. Pierzynski and Tony Cruz will continue to fill in.

Michael Cuddyer (hamstring) expects to return Friday.

Cuddyer is out of the Rockies' starting lineup again on Wednesday due to hamstring soreness, but it's not a major injury. The Rockies are off on Thursday and then begin a three-game series with the Marlins on Friday night.

Nationals manager Matt Williams said Wednesday that he expects Ryan Zimmerman (hamstring) to return from the disabled list "sometime in September."

It will probably be late-September. Zimmerman is still limited to underwater treadmill workouts and there's no timetable yet for him to resume baseball-related activities. The veteran third baseman has been sidelined since late July with a Grade 3 right hamstring strain.

Joe Panik (finger) is back in the Giants' starting lineup on Wednesday night against the Cubs.

Panik missed a couple of games after dislocating his pinkie finger on a slide into second base Sunday. The 23-year-old rookie is batting .282/.336/.333 this season.

Nick Swisher underwent season-ending surgery Wednesday afternoon on both of his knees.

The procedures were arthroscopic debridements, and come with an 8-10 week rehab timetable. Swisher is expected to be fully healthy for the start of spring training next season. He concludes the 2014 campaign with a career-worst .208/.278/.331 batting line.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday that Michael Wacha (shoulder) could begin a minor league rehab assignment within two weeks.

Wacha has progressed to throwing bullpen sessions and Cardinals manager Mike Matheny noted earlier this week that the workouts so far have "looked real effortless." The young starter has been on the shelf since June because of a stress reaction in his right shoulder. He's on track to rejoin the Cards around mid-September, though there are still many more hurdles to clear.

Justin Verlander (shoulder) expects to start Saturday against the Twins.

Verlander played catch on flat ground Tuesday without issue and is scheduled to pitch a bullpen session on Thursday. The right-hander has been sidelined since last Monday due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder. He's not a very reliable fantasy option at this point, even against light-hitting Minnesota.

Carlos Beltran is not in Wednesday's lineup after aggravating his right elbow injury on a swing Tuesday.

Beltran return to playing the outfield in the last week, but he was in the DH spot Tuesday and felt something in his elbow on a swing. The veteran will be examined by the doctor before it's determined how big of a setback it is, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi is hoping Beltran will only be out "just a day or two."

Charlie Morton's injury designation has been changed from right hip inflammation to a sports hernia.

It's a more serious injury, but Morton said he hopes to return later this season. Surgery is a possibility, but the right-hander is hoping to delay it until the offseason. Morton pitched with the injury for a while before finally being placed on the DL over the weekend.

Rays activated OF Wil Myers from the 60-day disabled list.

Myers missed nearly three months with a fractured right wrist but is ready to go now after slugging a couple homers over seven rehab games. The reigning American League Rookie of the Year was hitting just .227/.313/.354 at the time of his injury but is worth scooping back up in leagues where he might have been dropped.
Aug 20 - 3:18 PM

Pirates activated RHP Gerrit Cole from the 15-day disabled list.

Cole will rejoin the Pirates' rotation on Wednesday against the Braves. He's made just two starts at the major league level since early June due to two different shoulder issues but pitched well in last two rehab outings to clear his way for a return. The fading Pirates could obviously use a strong outing from Cole right out of the gate.
