Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the A's are considering signing Hideki Okajima.

Okajima pitched brilliantly last season for Japan's Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, posting a 0.94 ERA across 47 2/3 innings. The 37-year-old left-hander owns a solid 3.11 career ERA and 1.25 career WHIP in the major leagues. He can probably be had on a one-year contract.

The Giants are aiming to activate Marco Scutaro (back) from the disabled list on Friday.

The tentative plan is for Scutaro to play a full nine innings with Triple-A Fresno on Thursday, with the team activating him before Friday's game if all goes well. Scutaro hasn't played a game yet this season due to chronic back problems, but he could be a big boost to the Giants in the second half.

Paul Goldschmidt smacked a walkoff two-run double in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over the Marlins.

Arizona entered the bottom of the 10th inning trailing by two runs with Marlins closer Steve Cishek on the mound, but Aaron Hill singled, Ender Inciarte drew a walk, David Peralta hit an RBI single, and then Goldschmidt ended it with a two-run double to left-center field. Goldy is batting .312/.404/.558 with 61 RBI in 92 games this season.

Derek Holland (knee) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment after the All-Star break.

Holland will throw live batting practice over the weekend, and he's tentatively scheduled to make his first rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on July 23. From there he'll build stamina much like a pitcher just beginning spring training, meaning he won't be back with the Rangers until sometime in August.

Troy Tulowitzki homered twice in the Rockies' 6-3 defeat of the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.

Tulo slugged a solo shot in the Rockies' two-run first inning and then added another solo bomb in the Rockies' three-run eighth. He could be on his way to his first National League MVP trophy with a .350/.441/.616 batting line, 20 homers, and 49 RBI in 86 games.

Royals head trainer Nick Kenney said the team is prepared to be without Jason Vargas for three to four weeks.

It was discovered Wednesday that Vargas needed an emergency appendectomy, and it appears the tam isn't expecting him back before the end of July. Bruce Chen will likely start in his place during his absence.

Carlos Beltran was scratched from the Yankees' starting lineup Wednesday with an eye injury.

Derek Jeter will step in and serve as the Yankees' designated hitter against the Indians. Beltran had been dealing with some swelling in the back of his right knee for much of this week, but he's out Wednesday because he suffered a bruise near his eye when a batting practice ball ricocheted off the screen and struck him.

Francisco Liriano (oblique) will return to the Pirates' starting rotation Sunday against the Reds.

Liriano wound up missing a month with a strained left oblique. He made a dominant rehab start Monday at Triple-A Indianapolis, fanning eight batters and allowing only three hits over six scoreless innings. Vance Worley has been moved to the Pittsburgh bullpen.

Pirates placed OF Starling Marte on the bereavement list.

Marte will miss the final two games of the Pirates' big four-game set in St. Louis. The Bucs have called up Matt Hague in a corresponding 25-man roster move.

Yankees placed RHP Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.

Tanaka has flown back to New York to undergo an MRI on his pitching elbow. It's a frightening situation for the Yankees, who committed a record-breaking seven-year, $155 million contract to the Japanese right-hander this winter. Tanaka owns an exceptional 2.51 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 135/19 K/BB ratio over his first 129 1/3 major league frames.
Jul 9 - 5:03 PM

Jason Castro (arm) is out of the Astros' starting lineup again on Wednesday versus the Rangers.

Castro has now missed three straight games with pain in his left armpit. The Astros still aren't exactly sure what's bothering him. He's been prescribed pain meds.

Mariners optioned RHP Taijuan Walker to Triple-A Tacoma.

Walker walked five and threw two wild pitches over four shaky innings Sunday against the White Sox. He'll head back to a lower level of competition and continue to work on his craft. The 21-year-old right-hander could still take on fantasy value later this season. In fact, he might be brought back up shortly after the All-Star break.
