Mets signed RHP Scott Atchison to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Atchison was non-tendered by the Red Sox in late November after he posted a quality 1.58 ERA and 36/9 K/BB ratio over 51 1/3 innings last season. The 36-year-old right-hander pitched through a torn ulnar collateral ligament late in the year, but he should have a good chance at winning a bullpen spot if he shows up to spring training healthy.

Nationals signed OF Reed Johnson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Johnson was just granted his release by the Marlins on Monday and it didn't take him long to find a new opportunity. The 38-year-old batted just .235/.266/.348 with two home runs in 201 plate appearances last season with Miami, but he could have an outside chance to make the Nats' Opening Day roster given their injury issues in the outfield.

Drew Storen left Monday's Grapefruit League game due to a blister on his right foot.

That's a sigh of relief for the Nationals, who are dealing with all sorts of bumps and bruises at the moment. Storen, who is expected to serve as Nats' closer this season, should be fine by the time Opening Day rolls around.

Anthony Rendon saw Dr. James Andrews on Monday to get a second opinion on his left knee.

Rendon suffered what was termed as a minor MCL sprain in his knee on March 9, but he continues to feel discomfort and went to Andrews to get some answers. The Nationals are still waiting on his diagnosis, but obviously they need to prepare themselves for the possibility that they will be without him for the early part of the season.

Red Sox manager John Farrell indicated Monday that prospect catcher Blake Swihart will begin the season with Triple-A Pawtucket.

In the wake of Christian Vazquez's elbow injury, some speculated that Swihart could be carried on the Opening Day roster, but he has limited experience above Double-A and figures to get at least a little more time in the minors before the Red Sox consider a call-up. Ryan Hanigan should begin the season as the primary catcher while the newly-acquired Sandy Leon and non-roster invitee Humberto Quintero are in the mix for the backup job. However, there's no question that Swihart could arrive sooner than originally anticipated.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said Monday that he doesn't expect Koji Uehara (hamstring) to be ready for Opening Day.

It's not a big surprise at this point. Uehara suffered a left hamstring strain about two weeks ago and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Monday, but there's simply not enough time to get him ready for Opening Day. However, he should join Boston's bullpen relatively quickly if he can avoid setbacks. Edward Mujica will be the favorite for saves during his absence, but Farrell could also play the matchups.

Cubs reassigned 3B Kris Bryant and SS Addison Russell to minor league camp.

Bryant was the best hitter in the Cactus League this spring, but the Cubs can get an extra year of control on him if they leave him off their roster for another two weeks. The 23-year-old top third base prospect should be mashing in the majors by the middle of April.
Mar 30 - 1:19 PM

Cubs optioned INF Javier Baez to Triple-A Iowa.

Baez batted just .173/.218/.231 with 20 strikeouts in 16 games this spring in the Cactus League, looking like the very same hitter who hit .169/.227/.324 with 95 strikeouts in 52 games last season as a rookie. Tommy La Stella and Arismendy Alcantara will see time at second base until the powerful but inconsistent Baez improves his plate discipline.

Mets acquired LHP Alex Torres from the Padres for RHP Cory Mazzoni and a player to be named later.

New York has been on the hunt for left-handed relief help since losing Josh Edgin to Tommy John surgery. Torres isn't your typical lefty specialist -- his career numbers against right-handers are better than his numbers against lefties -- but the 27-year-old boasts a 2.55 ERA in 120 career major league innings and he won't even be arbitration-eligible until 2017. It's a decent get.

Denard Span (abdomen) said Sunday that he isn't sure when he'll be cleared to play in rehab games.

Span is making steady progress from his second core muscle surgery -- he ran sprints and took swings with a fungo bat this past weekend in Florida -- but the Nationals have not yet mapped out a rehab assignment for him. Span probably won't be activated from the disabled list until sometime in early-to-mid May. Michael Taylor is expected to be Washington's primary center fielder in April.

Justin Verlander told reporters Monday that he's taking it "day to day" with his ailing triceps.

Verlander had to be pulled from a Grapefruit League start Friday due to discomfort in his throwing arm and he won't take his next turn in the Tigers' spring rotation on Thursday. This isn't believed to be a serious injury, but the veteran right-hander may have to open the 2015 regular season on the 15-day disabled list.

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, the Mets "still may trade right-hander Dillon Gee within the month."

Gee moved back into the Mets' starting rotation following Zack Wheeler's season-ending injury, but Rubin hears that team officials would rather have prospect Rafael Montero in that vacated spot. Gee held the Cardinals to two runs over seven innings on Sunday, lowering his Grapefruit League ERA to 2.49. He's due $5.3 million in 2015 and will be arbitration-eligible for the final time in 2016.
