Athletics signed LHP Pedro Viola to a minor league contract.

Viola failed to appear in the majors in 2012 and was released by the Orioles in the offseason. The 29-year-old left-hander will continue to serve as organizational depth.

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.
May 20 - 8:38 PM

David Freese was scratched from Monday's lineup due to inflammation near his right thumb.

Freese was spiked during Sunday's game. He'll be available off the bench and could be ready to return to action on Tuesday. Ty Wigginton is getting the start at third base Monday.
May 20 - 8:37 PM

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Jurickson Profar will split playing time with Leury Garcia at second base while Ian Kinsler is on the disabled list.

"Leury's going to get some time there," Washington said. "So when you see Profar sitting, don't be surprised." It's obviously not what fantasy owners that picked up Profar want to hear. He should still see most of the starts at second, but Washington wants to keep Garcia sharp.
May 20 - 7:27 PM

Bryce Harper (knee) is back in the Nationals' lineup Monday.

Harper sat out Saturday and Sunday due to soreness in his left knee caused by last week's collision with the outfield wall. He's probably still a little sore but is feeling well enough to give it a go.
May 20 - 6:27 PM

Alex Rodriguez (hip) fielded grounders and took 25 swings in an indoor batting cage Monday at the Yankees' minor league complex in Tampa, Florida.

Kicking off his third week of on-field activities following hip surgery, Rodriguez also ran from pole to pole near the warning track four times. "Not bad," said Rodriguez. It's not clear when he'll begin playing in games, but the Yankees hope to have him back around midseason.
May 20 - 5:42 PM

Ryan Howard received a cortisone shot in his left knee on Sunday.

The Phillies said that a "change" was found in his meniscus, as well as inflammation. Howard is considered day-to-day for now, but he could require a stint on the disabled list if he doesn't see improvement following the cortisone shot.
May 20 - 5:34 PM

Carlos Ruiz was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Tough break for Ruiz, who had a late start to the season following his 25-game suspension. The injury will likely leave him on the shelf until mid-to-late June. He'll be placed on the disabled list Tuesday to make room for Tyler Cloyd on the roster. Erik Kratz and Humberto Quintero will fill in behind the late for now.
May 20 - 5:26 PM

Dodgers activated LHP Ted Lilly from the 15-day disabled list.

Lilly has been sidelined since April 29 with a strained right rib cage. The Dodgers have the option to skip the fifth spot in the rotation on Thursday, so it's not clear if the veteran southpaw will pitch as a starter or reliever initially.
May 20 - 4:55 PM

Rangers designated RHP Derek Lowe for assignment.

The move clears a spot for Monday's starter, Josh Lindblom. Lowe has struggled in a mop-up role this season, posting an ugly 9.00 ERA in 13 innings. The Rangers are paying him $1.25 million in 2013.
May 20 - 4:19 PM

Yan Gomes slugged two home runs -- including a 10th-inning walkoff -- in Monday's 10-8 defeat of the Mariners.

Gomes hit a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning and then played the hero by cranking a three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th with the Indians trailing by two. Gomes finished with four RBI and now has nine RBI in 17 games this season to go along with a cool .951 OPS. He should start seeing a bit more regular playing time.
May 20 - 4:17 PM

Stephen Drew (back) has returned to the starting lineup for the Red Sox on Monday.

Drew missed back-to-back games over the weekend due to back issue, but it was never a major concern. The 30-year-old is hitting .238/.336/.410 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .746 OPS through 31 games this season.
