David Ortiz told Rob Bradford of WEEI.com on Wednesday morning that he's encouraged by his progress from his right Achilles tendon injury.

"I’m not completely recovered, but I’m going to be ready to go for Opening Day," said Ortiz. The veteran slugger has been hitting without any issues and has even participated in some "small running," but he plans to ramp things up further on Wednesday. While Ortiz plans to take things slow upon reporting to camp, he's cautiously optimistic that he'll be ready to go for the team's exhibition opener.

Kelly Johnson went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and a two-run home run to help lead the Braves past the Nationals on Monday.

The utilityman got the start at left field in this one. He extended the Braves' lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run off of Doug Fister in the sixth inning, then added an RBI single in the seventh. The 33-year-old veteran has come to the plate 42 times and has homered twice with seven RBI while batting .263/.333/.526.

Brian McCann went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, helping the Yankees edge the Rays on Monday.

Cann slugged a round-tripper off of Brandon Gomes in the sixth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie. It proved to be the deciding run. McCann has been rather quiet offensively, as he's hitting just .250/.299/.417 with two home runs and nine RBI following Monday's game. 21 of the 25 home runs he has hit since signing with the Yankees have come at home, taking advantage of the short porch in right field.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons revealed after Monday's loss to the Red Sox that he would have used Brett Cecil as his closer had an opportunity arisen.

Miguel Castro has struggled lately, as he's been scored upon in four out of his last five appearances and blown two save chances over that stretch. The 20-year-old took the loss on Monday, retiring just one of the four batters he faced. Cecil has been worse this season with a 7.20 ERA, but it appears that, at the very least, the two might be in a committee at closer at this point. "Ideally, we'll get some defined roles," Gibbons said. "Right now it's really just kind of a crap shoot but we need to settle in and run with it and live with the results, is really the way we need to start approaching it." Needless to say, it's a less than ideal situation for fantasy owners.

Mookie Betts delivered the winning hit in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single to left-center on Monday against the Blue Jays.

The score was knotted up at five apiece entering the bottom of the ninth. Betts, who was 2-for-3 with a double prior to his final at-bat, stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and one out against Miguel Castro. Betts sent a 1-0 offering into left-center to bring home the game-winning run. It was a rare offensive outburst for the prospect, as he still carries a meager .218/.303/.333 triple-slash line with two home runs and 10 RBI on the season.

Daniel Murphy helped push the Mets to victory, slugging a ninth-inning three-run home run as his team topped the Marlins on Monday.

Murphy entered the frame 0-for-3, appearing to extend what has been a season-long slump. However, he got around on a Steve Cishek offering with two men on base to put the Mets up 3-1 in the top of the ninth. Murphy has two home runs, 14 RBI, and a .174/.247/.333 triple-slash line on the season.
Apr 27 - 9:22 PM

Dillon Gee allowed just one run, needing only 70 pitches to get through 7 2/3 innings in a no-decision versus the Marlins on Monday.

Gee had shut the Marlins out through seven, but got into two-out trouble in the eighth. Justin Bour, Gee Gordon, and Martin Prado hit consecutive singles to plate the game's first run to chase Gee from the game. The Mets came back in the next frame to take Gee out of the running for the loss. Overall, the right-hander gave up six hits, walked none, and struck out three. Gee has been solid over his last two starts, lowering his ERA to 4.26. He'll look to keep it going over the weekend at home against the Nationals next.

Yunel Escobar left Monday's game against the Braves with an apparent left hand injury.

He appeared to be spiked by Andrelton Simmons as Simmons collided with him at third base. The Nationals should provide an update on Escobar's status before long.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that Hunter Pence (forearm) is about a week away from taking batting practice.

Bochy conceded that it was an educated guess on his part, but it offers a rough timeline. Pence's recovery from a fractured forearm is coming alone a little more slowly than expected, as the Giants had hoped he'd be ready to go at the beginning of May. It's now looking like the best-case scenario for his return will be mid-May.
Apr 27 - 8:40 PM

Brandon McCarthy has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

It's really a bummer for the Dodgers but especially for McCarthy, who had seemed to finally put his shoulder issues behind him and show signs of blossoming. He'll undergo Tommy John surgery soon and be sidelined into the 2016 season. With Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) also still a question mark, the Dodgers might be scour the trade market for rotation help. For now, Scott Baker and Mike Bolsinger could stick around for a while.
Apr 27 - 7:16 PM

Gregory Polanco was scratched from Monday's lineup with tightness in his left groin.

It's not clear when Polanco suffered the injury. He'll receive treatment and be re-evaluated during the game and an update on his status will likely be available later Monday. Andrew Lambo took his place in right field.

Reds placed RHP Homer Bailey on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 24, with a right elbow ligament sprain.

Yikes. Bailey had made just two starts after working his way back from last September's flexor tendon surgery and now it appears he might be headed for Tommy John surgery. The Reds have yet to comment on whether Bailey will have an operation or if he'll try rehabbing the injury first. Raisel Iglesias and Michael Lorenzen are candidates to replace Bailey in the rotation.
