Mets manager Terry Collins insisted Wednesday night that Frank Francisco will serve as the Mets' closer.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson left the door open for Bobby Parnell when asked about the club's ninth-inning job earlier this week. But it's a decision that ultimately comes down to Collins, and he seems to have faith in Francisco -- at least, for now. "He is the closer," Collins told columnist Kevin Kernan of the New York Post. Both pitchers are worth grabbing on draft day.

Drew Pomeranz threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits, to lead the Padres to a 3-0 victory over the Reds on Saturday.

Pomeranz yielded a double and two singles on the afternoon, walking just one while striking out six. He also helped himself at the plate, hitting his first home run of the year and collecting two RBI. Pitching is what he's best at, though, and the 27-year-old is now 7-7 with a 2.76 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 102/39 K/BB ratio over 88 innings of work. He'll try to continue his breakout first half Saturday against the Yankees.

Carlos Carrasco threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over the Tigers on Saturday.

Carrasco has gotten progressively better with each start this month, and on Saturday he gave up just four hits and a walk while striking out seven. The complete game was his first this year and the seventh of his career. Carrasco improved to 3-2 with a 2.73 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 49/13 K/BB ratio over 56 innings of work. He'll try to keep rolling Thursday against the Blue Jays.

Vincent Velasquez said he's discussed an innings limit with agent Scott Boras.

Here we go again. Boras butted heads with the Mets over Matt Harvey's innings limit last year and also went toe to toe with the Marlins over Jose Fernandez. Now it's the Phillies' turn to go 15 rounds with Boras. The Phillies won't be in the playoff race this year, which should make the decision to shut Velasquez down a little easier. "The agents and I discussed it a little bit, but I don't know the definite answer, an exact amount of innings," said Velasquez. "I'd want to say roughly like maybe 150 or something, maybe 160 tops." The right-hander has never logged more than 125 innings in a season. He's only at 61 2/3 innings now so there's still a long way to go before Velasquez hits his limit, whatever that might be.

Francisco Lindor hit two home runs in Saturday's win over the Tigers.

Lindor hit a solo shot off Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez in the first inning before launching another solo dinger in the eighth. It was the first multi-homer game of the 22-year-old's young career. Lindor now has 10 home runs, 39 RBI, 47 runs scored and 12 steals this year to go with a robust .306/.365/.471 line.

Matt Adams (back) is absent from the Cardinals' starting lineup Saturday against the Mariners.

Adams was scratched from Friday's game with lower back stiffness and will sit again Saturday. Brandon Moss will take over for Adams at first base and bat fifth against M's right-hander Nathan Karns. Adams remains day-to-day.

Edwin Encarnacion carried the Blue Jays to victory Saturday against the White Sox, providing three hits and four RBI.

In a game that featured eight home runs, Encarnacion surprisingly kept the ball in the yard with two doubles and a single. Don't call this a hot streak. Encarnacion's epic June has been more like a volcanic eruption. He's slugged nine homers this month with 26 RBI and 14 extra-base hits. The 33-year-old leads the majors with 66 RBI and is going to get an absolutely ridiculous payday when he hits the open market this winter.

Brett Lawrie hammered a pair of home runs Saturday in a loss to the Blue Jays.

The Pale Hose matched a team record with seven home runs on Saturday, though all of them were solo shots. Lawrie legged an inside-the-parker in the second inning before taking R.A. Dickey deep again in the fourth. He added an RBI single in the sixth for good measure. The 26-year-old is now on pace for 20 home runs, which would best the 16 he belted last season. Unfortunately he's hitting just .241 with 88 strikeouts in 278 at-bats.
Jun 25 - 5:50 PM

Kevin Gausman fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday as the Orioles defeated the Rays 5-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

It was his first win in 13 starts this season. Gausman was brilliant, giving up just four hits (all of them singles) while walking none and striking out seven. It was just the second time he had completed seven innings in a start this season. He had allowed 10 runs over his last two starts, so the gem was nice to see. We know the talent is there, but consistency continues to be an issue. The 25-year-old will bring a 3.93 ERA into a start against the Mariners next Friday on the road.
Jun 25 - 4:29 PM

A.J. Reed will DH and bat sixth Saturday in his major league debut against the Royals.

He has an enticing matchup against light-throwing veteran Chris Young. Reed was called up to the majors after hitting .266 with 11 HR and 36 RBI in 59 games for Triple-A Fresno. He was among the top hitters in minor league baseball last season when he clobbered 34 HR in 135 games between High-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. Reed could stay in the majors for good if he gets off to a hot start.
Jun 25 - 4:25 PM

Jose Abreu (leg) returned to the starting lineup Saturday against the the Blue Jays.

Abreu sat out Friday's game due to leg fatigue, but it's not a major concern. After a slow start to the season, the slugger is batting .333 with five homers and 20 RBI this month.
Jun 25 - 4:14 PM

Gregory Polanco (leg) remains out of the starting lineup Saturday versus the Dodgers.

Polanco is dealing with some discomfort in his left leg and apparently needs at least another day. Matt Joyce is getting another start in right field.
