ESPN's Buster Olney reports that concern over Felix Hernandez's pitching elbow might affect the contract extension he agreed to last week.

Well, that certainly came out of nowhere. It was reported last week that King Felix and the Mariners had a deal in place that would pay him a total of $175 million over the next seven seasons, but evidently a physical he took raised a red flag about an elbow issue. It's not clear at this point whether the extension will be reworked or scrapped altogether, nor is it clear whether the ailment might be serious enough to affect his availability for the start of the season.

Nick Markakis is leading off for the Orioles in Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday against the Tigers.

Facing right-hander Max Scherzer, the O's will go with what became their standard starting lineup by the end of the regular season. The full card: Markakis RF, Alejandro De Aza LF, Adam Jones CF, Nelson Cruz DH, Steve Pearce 1B, J.J. Hardy SS, Ryan Flaherty 3B, Nick Hundley C, Jonathan Schoop 2B. Chris Tillman is on the mound for Baltimore.

Raul Ibanez is not on the Royals' roster for their ALDS matchup against the Angels.

Ibanez was active for Tuesday night's Wild Card Game victory over the A's, but he didn't make the cut for the best-of-five Division Series. The 42-year-old outfielder batted just .167/.264/.285 in 90 games this season between Anaheim and Kansas City.

Yasmany Tomas' agent Jay Alou tweeted Thursday that his client has been declared an MLB free agent.

Tomas was officially cleared for employment in the United States last month and now Major League Baseball has given him the go-ahead to sign with a team. The 23-year-old corner outfielder from Cuba is expected to command more than $100 million on the open market. He has drawn heavy interest from the Phillies, Mets, Rangers, Padres, Yankees, Diamondbacks, and Giants.
Oct 2 - 12:23 PM

Jordan Zimmermann will start for the Nationals in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Giants.

No surprise here. Zimmermann no-hit the Marlins in his final regular-season start on Sunday and will face off against Tim Hudson this Saturday in the nation's capital. Washington will toss Stephen Strasburg in Game 1 on Friday and Doug Fister in Game 3 on Monday. If a Game 4 is necessary, Gio Gonzalez will get the nod.
Oct 2 - 12:07 PM

Rajai Davis (groin) is on the Tigers' ALDS roster.

That's not a surprise, but it still remains to be seen whether he can start in Game 1 on Thursday night in Baltimore. Davis suffered a Grade 1 groin strain last weekend. He ran and played catch Wednesday.
Oct 2 - 11:23 AM

Orioles GM Dan Duquette said Thursday that Chris Davis may be activated if the club advances to the ALCS.

Davis was suspended September 12 for amphetamines and has to sit out of the Orioles' first eight playoff games, so the decision will probably come down to how long the ALDS goes. Davis struggled during the regular season, batting .196 with a .704 OPS. But he still managed to slug 26 homers in 127 games and could be a weapon for the O's if they make a deep October run.
Oct 2 - 10:48 AM

Ubaldo Jimenez is on the Orioles' roster for their ALDS matchup against the Tigers.

Jimenez had an ugly 4.81 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 125 1/3 total innings this season, but he pitched pretty well in September and the O's feel he can be a useful option in long relief. Brad Brach also made the roster. Brian Matusz and T.J. McFarland did not.
Oct 2 - 10:44 AM

Jake Peavy will start for the Giants in Game 1 of their NLDS matchup against the Nationals.

Madison Bumgarner started Wednesday's Wild Card Game, hurling a nine-inning shutout at the Pirates, so he won't be available until NLDS Game 3. Peavy posted an outstanding 2.17 ERA in 78 2/3 innings for the Giants after the July 26 trade that got him out of Boston. He'll need to be at his best against Nats ace Stephen Strasburg.
Oct 2 - 9:27 AM

Madison Bumgarner struck out 10 in a complete-game, 8-0 shutout of the Pirates in the National League Wild Card Game Wednesday.

Bumgarner didn't need to be dominant, but he was anyway. The left-hander gave up just four hits, all singles, and walked one, using 109 pitches to get through the game. October baseball is becoming old hat for Bumgarner at this point, as the 25-year-old already has seven postseason starts in his career. Bumgarner is on track to make the start for the Giants in NLDS Game 3 against the Nationals.
Oct 1 - 11:26 PM

Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of the Giants' win over the Pirates in Wednesday's Wild Card Game.

Of all the unlikely heroes in a one-game playoff, Crawford may have been among the unlikeliest. But there he was, pulling an Edinson Volquez curveball into the right field stands for a grand slam that gave the Giants the lead and ultimately the victory. Crawford finished 1-for-5 in the game, but he can go hitless until 2015 and still have earned his spot in the lineup this postseason.
Oct 1 - 11:23 PM

Chris Owings will have surgery to repair the posterior labrum in his left shoulder.

Dr. James Andrews will perform the surgery. The Diamondbacks are expecting Owings to be ready for spring training. Owings hit .261/.300/.406 while playing just 91 games due to injury in his rookie year.
