Casey Janssen is scheduled to throw off a mound Thursday for the first time since shoulder surgery.

Janssen underwent right shoulder surgery in November in order to relieve discomfort in his AC joint. Still, he expects to be ready for the season and is expected to get the opportunity to keep his closer job over Sergio Santos, who is also making his way back from shoulder surgery.

Bryce Harper (knee, illness) is expected to return from the disabled list on Tuesday.

Harper was originally lined up to return on Monday, but plans changed due to an illness. He's already feeling better as of Tuesday afternoon, so all signs point to him being in the lineup. Harper has been out since mid-August with a bone bruise in his left knee, but the Nats are hoping to get some at-bats under his belt going into the postseason.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Mets will tender a contract to Matt Harvey for next season.

There has been plenty of chatter about Harvey's future amid his struggles and continued injury issues, but Mets general manager Sandy Alderson recently indicated that the Mets were strongly leaning in that direction. The 28-year-old has a miserable 6.60 ERA and 1.66 WHIP in 17 starts and one relief appearance this season, but Heyman hears that the Mets are encouraged by his recent velocity. He's likely to see only a small raise from his $5.125 million salary via arbitration, so it's a worthy gamble to bring him back for his walk year.
Sep 26 - 1:50 PM

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Terry Collins is expected to be informed as early as next Monday that his contract won't be renewed for next season.

Previous reports have indicated the same thing, so it appears to be a foregone conclusion at this point. The Mets have had all sorts of injuries this season, so their poor season can't be blamed on Collins alone, but this could be the ideal time to start with a clean slate. According to Puma, Robin Ventura, Alex Cora and Kevin Long are "early persons of interest" as the club compiles a list of potential replacements. Bob Geren and Chip Hale could also be in the mix. The search should intensity soon.

Matt Olson has been diagnosed with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain.

He's done for the season, as Athletics manager Bob Melvin had previously indicated was likely. It's a rotten way for Olson's campaign to end, but the rookie had a mighty impressive showing with 24 home runs over just 59 games.

Marwin Gonzalez went 4-for-5 with a homer, three RBI, and three runs scored in the Astros' 11-2 thrashing of the Rangers on Monday.

Gonzalez struck out in his first at-bat, but he filled the box score from there. The 28-year-old slugger led off the top of the fourth inning with a single and then drove in two runs with another single later in that eight-run frame for Houston. Gonzalez belted a solo homer in the top of the sixth and added one more single for good measure in the top of the eighth. He's slashing .302/.371/.531 with 23 homers and 85 RBI in 129 games this season for the American League West champions.
Sep 25 - 11:56 PM

Javier Baez finished 2-for-4 with a three-run homer Monday in the Cubs' 10-2 rout of the Cardinals.

Chicago's magic number to clinch the National League Central is now down to one. Baez went deep off Cardinals starter Luke Weaver in the top of the third inning and then tacked on a single in the top of the eighth before getting removed for late-sub Ian Happ. The 24-year-old infielder now has 23 home runs and 75 RBI in 141 games this season to go along with a .799 OPS.

X-rays on Jose Altuve's left forearm came back negative.

Altuve was lifted from Monday's game after being plunked on the forearm by a pitch, but he's escaped with merely a bruise. The Astros are calling him day-to-day.
Sep 25 - 11:20 PM

Seth Lugo tossed six scoreless innings as the Mets defeated the Braves 3-2 in the second half of Monday's doubleheader.

Lugo was surprisingly terrific, yielding just two hits and zero walks while striking out seven. The 27-year-old right-hander is now 7-5 on the season with a 4.72 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, and 81/25 K/BB ratio in 97 1/3 innings. He'll finish up with a road start against the last-place Phillies.

Mookie Betts will have his left wrist examined on Tuesday.

Red Sox manager John Farrell said that Betts being pulled with left wrist soreness was precautionary, and the outfielder thinks he'll be fine. However, he'll have the wrist looked at just to be safe. It certainly wouldn't be a surprise to see him miss a game or two even if he checks out OK.
Sep 25 - 10:49 PM

Sean Doolittle earned his 24th save of the season on Monday against the Phillies.

Doolittle retired all three batters he faced in the bottom of the ninth inning, inducing two pop-ups and striking out Ty Kelly to end the night. The left-hander has not blown a save opportunity in his time as the Nationals' closer and for the season he boasts a 2.50 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. Doolittle looks ready for the postseason.
Sep 25 - 10:41 PM

Yadier Molina was lifted from Monday's game against the Cubs after taking consecutive foul tips off his mask in the seventh inning.

Molina looked dazed after the first foul tip but eventually gathered himself, only to be nailed again with another foul ball. To make matters worse, he vomited on the field as he walked off with the Cardinals' trainer. Molina was able to head into the clubhouse under his own power, but he'll be put through concussion protocol.
