Royals acquired INF Elliot Johnson from the Rays as the player to be named in the James Shields trade.

Johnson was designated for assignment by the Rays last week. The 28-year-old batted just .242/.304/.350 with six home runs and 33 RBI in 331 plate appearances last season for Tampa Bay and figures to compete for a backup infielder job this spring.

Jason Grilli earned his 17th save of the season Sunday in the Pirates' 1-0 defeat of the Astros.

Grilli retired all three batters he faced, needing only 10 pitches. He's been probably the best closer in baseball through the first seven weeks of the 2013 season, boasting a 0.92 ERA, 0.66 WHIP and 31/4 K/BB ratio in 19 2/3 innings. He has not blown an opportunity.
May 19 - 4:10 PM

Justin Masterson struck out a season-high 11 batters while tossing seven scoreless frames in Sunday's 6-0 win over the Mariners.

Masterson permitted just three singles, walked a pair and hit a batter. The brilliant outing comes on the heels of a shutout of the Yankees, and he has now won seven games on the year. The big right-hander is looking much more like the 2011 version and in fact has been even better to this point. He'll bring a 2.83 ERA and 1.13 WHIP into Boston next weekend.

The Rangers could place Ian Kinsler (ribs) on the disabled list.

He will have to show that his sore ribs will allow him to swing a bat soon, otherwise the club will put him on the DL and call up Jurickson Profar. Kinsler was originally hurt last Tuesday when he was hit with a ball while stealing a base and aggravated the ailment Thursday while getting out of the way of a pitch.
May 19 - 3:02 PM

Carlos Ruiz left Sunday's game against the Reds with a right hamstring strain.

Ruiz hurt himself while running the bases. There's no word yet on the severity of the injury, but a trip to the disabled list would seem to be a distinct possibility. Humberto Quintero would take Ruiz's spot on the roster if a move needs to be made.
May 19 - 2:30 PM

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Jurickson Profar is in Arlington and might be recalled.

The club has him around as insurance in case a roster move needs to be made, likely involving Ian Kinsler (ribs). Profar got off to a slow start at Triple-A Round Rock this season, but he has come alive lately and is batting .278/.370/.438 with four homers and six steals overall. If Kinsler heads to the DL, Profar would play every day.
May 19 - 2:12 PM

Bryce Harper (knee) is not in the Nationals' lineup Sunday.

Harper is still feeling banged up from last week's collision with the wall, and his knee appears to be in the worse shape of his various aches and pains. He'll try to return to the lineup on Monday.
May 19 - 1:55 PM

Adam Dunn (back) is back in the White Sox' lineup Sunday.

Dunn left Saturday's game with back spasms, but he's feeling a lot better a day later. The veteran is batting .421/.450/1.158 with four homers and 10 RBI over his last five games.
May 19 - 1:11 PM

Logan Morrison (knee) is slated to begin a rehab assignment with High-A Jupiter on Monday.

Morrison has been playing in extended spring training games lately and hasn't had any setbacks with his surgically-repaired knee. With his 20-day rehab clock started on Monday, he'll be activated no later than early June as long as he doesn't have a setback.
May 19 - 1:03 PM

Sunday's game between the Blue Jays and Yankees has been postponed due to rain.

A makeup date has not been announced. The clubs will push back scheduled starters R.A. Dickey and CC Sabathia back a day.
May 19 - 12:41 PM

Andrew McCutchen was scratched from the Pirates' lineup due to pain in his right knee.

It's not clear at this point how McCutchen suffered the injury or if it might cause him to miss additional games. The Pirates should offer an update on his status soon. Starling Marte will move over to center field to cover for McCutchen, while Travis Snider plays left and Garrett Jones right.
May 19 - 11:50 AM

Dodgers activated 2B Mark Ellis from the 15-day disabled list.

Ellis had been scheduled to remain on his rehab assignment through the weekend, but the Dodgers decided to bring him back early since Luis Cruz (elbow) is banged up. The second baseman is hitting second on Sunday afternoon against the Braves' Mike Minor.
