Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Cardinals have signed manager Mike Matheny and general manager John Mozeliak to contract extensions.

Matheny was extended through 2014 and Mozeliak was extended through 2016. Matheny, who originally signed a two-year deal, led the Cardinals to 88 regular-season wins and an NLCS appearance last season as a rookie manager. Mozeliak has crafted one of the best 25-man rosters in the league and has helped cultivate an elite farm system. The Redbirds are poised for a long, successful run under both Matheny and Mo.

Yankees activated DH Alex Rodriguez from the 15-day disabled list.

A-Rod is at DH and batting fifth Thursday against the Blue Jays after missing the last three weeks with a strained hamstring. He went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI on his two-game rehab assignment with Double-A Trenton, but the 40-year-old returns Thursday to a rough .194/.275/.444 batting line. He offers a bit of power but not much more in what is technically his age-41 season.

Cardinals placed 3B Matt Carpenter on the paternity leave list.

Carpenter's wife went into labor with the couple's first child ahead of Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Cubs. He could miss the Cardinals' entire four-game series in Washington, D.C. Greg Garcia was called up Thursday in a corresponding roster move to provide infield depth.

Logan Forsythe (shoulder) took grounders Wednesday.

It's a nice first step for the rehabbing second baseman, who's been on the disabled list since May 14 with a fracture in his left shoulder blade. Forsythe told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that he's aiming to return during the Rays' next homestand (June 10-19). He was mashing at a .308/.398/.523 clip with four home runs and 12 RBI in 29 games before the injury.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Shelby Miller is dealing with discomfort in a finger on his right hand.

Miller jammed the finger against the pitching mound in San Diego during a start at Petco Park back in April. He's still scheduled to take his next turn Sunday at home against the Padres, but a disabled list stint may be coming (whether he actually needs it or not) if things go poorly in that outing. Miller has a hideous 7.09 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, and 30/29 K/BB ratio through his first 45 2/3 innings with Arizona.
May 26 - 11:16 AM

Christian Yelich (back) is out again Thursday.

This will be the fifth game in a row that Yelich has missed with what the Marlins originally labeled back spasms. It's probably something a little more serious than that. Derek Dietrich is starting in left field in a very patchwork lineup for the Fish on Thursday afternoon against the Rays.
May 26 - 10:52 AM

Giancarlo Stanton (side) is out of the Marlins' starting lineup Thursday versus the Rays.

Stanton also sat out Wednesday after complaining of soreness in his right side. He has been struggling offensively since a collision with teammate Marcell Ozuna on May 15 in Washington, D.C. All of this seems related.

Dodgers top pitching prospect Julio Urias will make his major league debut Friday against the Mets.

Here we go. Urias has been regarded as one of the top young pitching talents in baseball since age 16 and he will debut Friday night at Citi Field at the age of 19. The left-hander was sporting a dominant 1.10 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, and 44/8 K/BB ratio through 41 innings this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City. He'll be filling in Friday for Alex Wood, who has been scratched due to left triceps tightness. It's not clear what the plan is beyond Friday's game.
May 26 - 10:35 AM

Jean Segura (head) is in the Diamondbacks' starting lineup Thursday against the Pirates.

Segura was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh and tested for a concussion Tuesday after getting plunked on the side of the batting helmet by a 96 mph Arquimedes Caminero fastball. He somehow managed to avoid a serious injury and will bat leadoff in his return to action Thursday afternoon versus Pirates right-hander Gerrit Cole.
May 26 - 10:28 AM

Asdrubal Cabrera (back) hopes to return for Friday's series opener versus the Dodgers.

Cabrera made an early exit from Wednesday's series finale against the Nationals after experiencing back spasms. "All of a sudden, it locked up on him downstairs as he was stretching," Mets manager Terry Collins said Wednesday night. "He says he feels fine and will be ready for Friday. I hope he is." Cabrera is batting .283/.335/.392 with three home runs and 17 RBI in 46 games this season for New York.

Leonys Martin (hamstring) only expects to miss a couple of games.

Martin was lifted from Wednesday's defeat of the Athletics after tweaking his left hamstring while running the bases in the bottom of the third inning. "They decided to take me out of the game to be smart," the hot-hitting center fielder said late Wednesday. "But I hope to be back in a few days. We've got a day off tomorrow and we'll see. This is the first time I've had this happen, but it'll be all right."
May 26 - 8:47 AM

Adam Lind went 4-for-4 with two homers and six RBI to help propel the Mariners past the A's 13-3 on Wednesday.

Between his steady track record and the Mariners' fine start, Lind hasn't lost playing time to Dae Ho Lee at first base. He really should consider himself lucky, given that he entered the night with a .216/.246/.319 line. Of course, even if Lee does seem capable, Lind was always the better bet as a starter against righties. He should be solid from here on out.
