Omar Infante is planning to suit up for Team Venezuela in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Infante is completely recovered from the left hand fracture that he suffered in Game 4 of the 2012 World Series. He'll presumably start at second base for Venezuela.

Cubs placed LHP Jon Lester on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder fatigue and left lat tightness.

It's not ideal, obviously, but the good news is Lester's shoulder and lat are structurally sound. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein expects Lester to miss "only a start or two." Mike Montgomery will slide into the Cubs' rotation in the meantime.

Rays activated OF Kevin Kiermaier from the 60-day disabled list.

Kiermaier is ready to roll after missing over two months of action with a fractured hip (he also had a minor back issue last month). He was just 3-for-24 on a rehab assignment and might need a few extra days off initially, but fantasy owners should feel free to re-insert Kiermaier into their lineups. He's in center field and batting leadoff Friday.

Roberto Osuna will not be available to pitch Friday due to the flu.

He's not even at the ballpark, as the Blue Jays have told Osuna to stay at the team hotel to rest. Hopefully he'll be ready to go Saturday. Ryan Tepera will close on Friday if Toronto has a save chance. Danny Barnes and Dominic Leone are also unavailable Friday due to recent usage, so the Jays are shorthanded in the bullpen.

Alex Cobb (toe) could rejoin the Rays' rotation as soon as Tuesday versus the Blue Jays.

Cobb threw a 40-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is slated for another one Saturday. Assuming that goes well, he'll be cleared to rejoin the Rays' rotation. The veteran right-hander has missed the last two weeks with turf toe in his right big toe.

Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said Thursday that Odubel Herrera (hamstring) "might have to go on the DL."

"We’re thinking a lot about it," the skipper added. Herrera missed a third straight game Thursday with a strained left hamstring and he hasn't recovered as quickly as hoped. The injury comes at a poor time for Herrera's fantasy owners, as he's been one of the hottest hitters in baseball with a .379/.431/.636 line during his current 17-game hitting streak.

Adam Wainwright is heading back to St. Louis to have his ailing right arm examined.

Wainwright's velocity has hovered in the 82-85 mph range in his last two starts and after the first outing he admitted that he's dealing with some pain on the outside of his elbow/triceps area. For what it's worth, he said at the time that it's something that pops up on him now and then and eventually goes away. With Wainwright struggling and Luke Weaver available to step in (he threw two scoreless relief innings Thursday after Wainwright exited), the Cardinals could make a move here.
Aug 18 - 8:12 AM

Nomar Mazara went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run and five RBI in total, and the Rangers fended off the White Sox 9-8 on Thursday.

Mazara actually had a pair of big hits in the game, tying it with a two-run single in the third inning before breaking a tie with his three-run shot in the fifth. He's now homered in two straight and has 16, with an impressive 82 RBI -- fifth-most in the American League -- on the year. He's been especially potent in recent days, going 15-for-31 over his last eight games. The tear has his season line up to .260/.336/.440.
Aug 18 - 2:34 AM

Dexter Fowler finished 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored to help the Cardinals come back to beat the Pirates 11-7 on Thursday.

With the Cards trailing by a run in the seventh inning, Fowler ripped a pitch down the right field line that plated two and allowed the speedy outfielder to race around for his sixth triple of the year. He also walked twice in the game, reaching base in four of five plate appearances. It's nothing new for Fowler since his return from the disabled list -- in 10 games, he's now 14-for-31 with five doubles, two triples, a home run, 11 RBI and 11 runs scored. The hot stretch has his overall line up to a passable .262/.363/.489.

Gary Sanchez hit a three-run homer and added a two-run single later, collecting five RBI in the Yankees' 7-5 win over the Mets on Thursday.

Sanchez took Mets starter Steven Matz deep in the first inning for the three-run jack, his 22nd of the year and his fourth in his last six games. He tacked on a two-RBI single in the fourth, running his RBI total to 64 this year. The 24-year-old was mired in a slump in late July and early August, but that's a thing of the past. Sanchez is slashing .277/.352/.526 overall.
Aug 18 - 12:42 AM

Aaron Slegers allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings in his MLB debut Thursday, and the Twins beat the Indians 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Slegers was possibly even better than his ERA would indicate, giving up just two hits and walking two in total. He actually could have gone even deeper if Twins manager Paul Molitor had desired, needing just 82 pitches to get through his 6 1/3 innings of work. Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, the only thing he didn't do was get a win for his efforts. The young right-hander has been just as good at Triple-A this year, posting a 3.18 ERA while going 13-4, and Thursday's debut very well could have earned him a longer stay at the big league level.
Aug 18 - 12:15 AM

Reynaldo Lopez left Thursday's start against the Rangers with tightness in his right side.

He'll be reevaluated on Friday. Lopez had a rough night, allowing five hits, six runs (five earned) and four walks with six strikeouts before exiting with one out in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old has pitched to a mediocre 6.10 ERA in two starts since getting called up from Triple-A Charlotte earlier this month.
