Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that Phil Hughes will be shut down for a few days to upper back stiffness near his shoulder.

"There's always a little bit of concern," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Spring training is longer than usual this year, so if Hughes only misses one or two starts, there should be plenty of time for him to get ready for the season. However, the situation is obviously worth monitoring this spring.

Dodgers placed INF/OF Enrique Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

The Dodgers didn't want to wait a day until rosters expanded, so they're obviously confident Hernandez will need at least a couple weeks to recover. Joc Pederson will operate as the club's regular center fielder, while Austin Barnes replaced Hernandez on the roster.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Royals have acquired Jonny Gomes from the Braves.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman says the Braves will receive infield prospect Luis Valenzuela in return, with the Braves also sending the Royals some cash. Gomes was in the Braves' lineup Monday but was pulled following the fifth inning after the trade was apparently agreed upon. He's hitting only .221/.325/.364 on the season but entered play Monday with a .271/.375/.458 batting line in the second half. He'll offer the Royals a nice pinch-hitting option versus lefties.
Aug 31 - 8:44 PM

David Freese (finger) will be activated from the disabled list on Tuesday.

The thought had been that he would be activated Monday, but the Angels have decided to wait until rosters expand Tuesday. Freese has been on the shelf since late July with a non-displaced fracture in his right index finger. He's hitting .240/.309/.397 with 11 homers this season.
Aug 31 - 8:39 PM

Chris Bassitt will undergo an MRI Monday after experiencing right shoulder soreness.

Bassitt began feeling soreness after his previous start. He had been slated to start on Tuesday, but Cody Martin will be called up to take the ball instead. Obviously, more will be known about Bassitt's status after the exam results come back. He's been a nice surprise for the A's with a 2.82 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 73 1/3 innings.

The Rangers expect to use Josh Hamilton (knee) only as a pinch-hitter during the final month of the season.

Hamilton can hit and throw without any issues, but he remains unable to run without experiencing discomfort in his left knee. It's possible he'll require surgery over the offseason. The Rangers acquired Will Venable earlier this month as protection for Hamilton and he's now slated to serve as the club's regular left fielder down the stretch.

Maikel Franco (wrist) will take batting practice on Wednesday.

The feeling at the time when Franco was placed on the disabled list with a fractured left wrist was that there was a good chance his season would be over. However, it's now looking very likely that he'll be back at some point in September. "Once he does that -- getting a few at-bats and taking some batting practice -- I might run him right in there if he's 100 percent," Phillies interim manager Pete Mackanin said.
Aug 31 - 8:12 PM

Hunter Pence (oblique) took 20 swings off a tee on Monday but still was feeling pain.

Alex Pavlovic of CSNBayArea.com says Pence's left oblique injury is "worse than the Giants first thought" and "it's going to be a while" before the outfielder returns. Obviously it's a major blow to the Giants' postseason hopes. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported earlier Monday that San Francisco was having trade talks with the Red Sox regarding Alejandro De Aza.
Aug 31 - 7:42 PM

Brandon Crawford (oblique) is back in the Giants' lineup Monday.

Crawford hasn't played since tweaking his left oblique last Tuesday, but he's back in there just in time for the big series versus the Dodgers. The shortstop sports a .265/.324/.482 batting line with 19 homers and 75 RBI this season.
Aug 31 - 6:20 PM

Cubs acquired OF Austin Jackson and cash considerations from the Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later and international slot No. 98.

Jackson is hitting just .272/.312/.387 this season, but he gives the Cubs more depth and offers them another option in the outfield with Jorge Soler (oblique) injured. He's slated to hit free agency after the season.
Aug 31 - 6:10 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Giants are "still talking" to the Red Sox about Alejandro De Aza.

Rosenthal notes that San Francisco "would prefer to add an infielder," but it's "possible" they wind up with De Aza. De Aza could offer them protection with Hunter Pence (oblique) still on the shelf and Angel Pagan's health status always shaky. The veteran outfielder has hit .292/.347/.484 in 60 games for the Red Sox.
Aug 31 - 6:04 PM

Carlos Martinez will not make his scheduled start on Tuesday due to a back injury.

It looks like a move made to give Martinez some rest as much (or more) than it is about a back injury. He's currently on pace to throw 192 2/3 innings, which would eclipse last season's career-high workload by about 80 frames. Martinez should be ready to go early next week. Marco Gonzales will start in Martinez's place Tuesday.
