Phil Hughes (back) was diagnosed with a bulging disc in his upper spine following an MRI.

Hughes hurt himself Monday while covering first base during pitchers' fielding practice. He's currently taking anti-inflammatories to deal with the discomfort and expects to be symptom-free in the next four to five days. While he will not be ready to pitch when the Grapefruit League schedule starts, it's still way too early to say whether this will affect his readiness for the start of the season.

Kris Bryant (finger) could miss the entire weekend series against the Cardinals.

X-rays on Bryant's left pinkie came back clean after he was injured on a head-first slide Wednesday, but he's not feeling 100 percent. It doesn't appear at this point, however, that he'll require a disabled list stint. Javy Baez is at third base Friday, and Tommy La Stella is also a candidate to pick up starts.

Cardinals recalled C Carson Kelly from Triple-A Memphis.

Joe Schwarz of TheIntrepidSTL.com was first to report on Kelly's promotion. The Cards have designated the .155/.277/.197-hitting Eric Fryer for assignment. Considered by most to be the top catching prospect in the game, Kelly has batted .283/.375/.459 with 10 homers and 41 RBI this season at Memphis. As intriguing a prospect as Kelly is, though, he's not going to have fantasy value while playing behind Yadier Molina.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Blue Jays "have gotten some feelers" on Jose Bautista.

There are some hurdles to a potential trade, though, the first of which is that Bautista is hitting a disappointing .227/.340/.402 with 16 home runs this season and just .197/.312/.338 since June 1. He also has 10-and-5 rights and thus can veto any deal. However, while the Jays no doubt would have to pick up a chunk of what remains of his $18 million salary for this season to make a trade work, some contender might think it's worth taking a shot that Bautista can slug for a couple months for them. It shouldn't cost too much to acquire him.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Indians have expressed interest in Asdrubal Cabrera.

It sounds like he could be more of a fallback option if they're not able to work out a trade for a marquee player. Cabrera, of course, began his career with the Indians and would offer them some versatility. The 31-year-old impending free agent has batted .250/.333/.398 with nine homers in 70 games this season.

Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that the Cubs have inquired with the Rangers on the availability of Yu Darvish.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports previously reported that the Rangers were trying to gauge interest in Darvish, and it appears the Cubs are one of the first teams to have checked in. It could just be due diligence, although the Cubs have been connected to other starters, as well, even after acquiring Jose Quintana, so it appears they're interested in further upgrading their rotation.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Giants are hoping to finalize a contract with Pablo Sandoval on Friday.

Heyman says it's "still the expectation" that Sandoval will sign with the Giants, but he adds that the Royals and other teams have also shown interest. It will be a minor league deal for Sandoval, who was released by the Red Sox with $49 million left on his contract after hitting just .237/.286/.360 over parts of three seasons.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Rangers "have started reaching out to teams potentially interested in acquiring" Yu Darvish.

The Rangers aren't committed to selling yet, but they're 4.5 games out of the second American League Wild Card spot and are behind five other teams chasing the Rays and Yankees. If they do wind up selling, Darvish would immediately become the best available rental pitcher on the market. Passan lists the Astros, Brewers, Yankees, Indians, Rockies and Dodgers as teams that he could see as having interest in the impending free agent, although it's unclear at this point which, if any, of those clubs have talked to the Rangers about Darvish at this point.

Felix Hernandez struck out nine while allowing one run on three hits over seven innings in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Yankees.

Hernandez was brilliant in this one -- and that was with a somewhat questionable strike zone working against him. Only a Brett Gardner solo homer in the sixth preventing him from seven shutout frames. On the whole, this was King Felix's best start of the season. He will carry a 3.88 ERA and 1.36 WHIP (11 starts) into a home showdown with the Red Sox next time out as he looks to build off of Thursday's gem.

Brandon Phillips left Thursday's game against the Dodgers with right hamstring tightness.

Johan Camargo replaced Phillips at second base with Dansby Swanson taking Camargo's place at shortstop. Phillips went 1-for-3 with a triple before exiting in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old seems to get hurt all the time but his injuries are always minor. Consider him day-to-day.

Eric Hosmer went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored as the Royals bombarded the Tigers 16-4 on Thursday.

Hosmer got all of a solo homer in the third inning, taking Tigers starter Michael Fulmer out for a 444-foot blast. It was perhaps a metaphor for the game itself, as the Royals pounded Fulmer and company at every turn. Hosmer has five multi-hit games in his last nine contests to raise his season line to .315/.372/.493 with 14 homers, 46 RBI and 55 runs scored overall.
Jul 21 - 12:17 AM

Jonathan Schoop went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI as the Orioles topped the Rangers 9-7 on Thursday.

The Orioles were actually kept in check for three innings by Rangers starter Cole Hamels before Schoop's solo homer in the fourth. With the ice broken, the O's scored three more in the fifth and four in the sixth, with Schoop's two-run single capping the sixth inning outburst. With seven hits in his last 13 at-bats, the 25-year-old has his overall line up to a robust .302/.350/.540 with 19 homers, 63 RBI and 55 runs scored.
