Phillies signed INF/OF Austin Gallagher to a minor league contract.

Gallagher was released by the Dodgers this offseason after failing to advance beyond the High-A level. The 24-year-old tested positive for a banned substance last month and will begin serving his 50-game suspension now that he's signed.

Red Sox right-handed pitching prospect Anthony Ranaudo will make his major league debut against the Yankees on Friday.

One benefit of blowing up the major league team -- trading pitchers Jon Lester, Jake Peavy, John Lackey, Felix Doubront and Andrew Miller -- is it allows the Red Sox to give auditions to high-upside prospects like Ranaudo. The right-hander has been outstanding at the Triple-A level over the last two seasons, going 15-5 with a 2.53 ERA across 149-plus innings. He has long-term No. 3 starter upside, and short-term AL-only flier potential.

According to ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes, shortstop Stephen Drew has been traded to the Yankees.

It's a rare swap between the two bitter rivals. Drew has struggled to the tune of a .176/.255/.328 slash line since returning to the major leagues on June 1, but he plays steady defense at shortstop and there's reason to expect that he'll hit better down the stretch.
Jul 31 - 3:44 PM

According to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, a three-team trade is being pieced together involving David Price.

Topkin suspects that the Mariners and Tigers are joining the Rays in this deal. Stay tuned for the details.

Nationals acquired SS Asdrubal Cabrera from the Indians for SS Zach Walters.

The two-time All-Star has regressed to a .246/.305/.386 slash line, but he's still just 28 and owns a career .270/.331/.410 line. The price was right for Washington, which leveraged Cleveland's fear of allowing Cabrera to walk for nothing at season's end. With Ryan Zimmerman on the shelf with a severe hamstring strain, Cabrera should be able to pick up at-bats backing up Anthony Rendon, Danny Espinosa and Ian Desmond.
Jul 31 - 3:26 PM

Marlon Byrd is in the Phillies' lineup on Thursday.

Which is a strong indication that he will not be traded by Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline. Byrd is under contract through 2015 (with a vesting option for 2016) so the Phillies weren't going to deal him without getting something fairly significant in return.
Jul 31 - 3:20 PM

Orioles acquired LHP Andrew Miller from the Red Sox for LHP Eduardo Rodriguez.

It's likely that Boston didn't want to ship Miller to a division rival, but there wasn't a lot they could do when Dan Duquette put Rodriguez on the table. This is a steep price, but Baltimore absolutely had to bulk up its bullpen for the stretch run, and they weren't going to do better than Miller. The left-hander boasts a 2.34 ERA and 69/13 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings this year and now teams with Zach Britton and Brian Matusz to give Baltimore an elite trio of southpaw relievers.
Jul 31 - 3:13 PM

According to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian, the Indians have traded Asdrubal Cabrera to the Nationals.

Zach Walters, a 24-year-old infielder with good numbers this year at Triple-A, is headed to Cleveland in return. Cabrera will play second base in Washington, with Ian Desmond remaining at shortstop and Anthony Rendon covering third base while Ryan Zimmerman recovers from a severe hamstring strain. Cabrera was batting just .246/.305/.386 in 97 games this season for the Tribe, but he has decent power for a middle infielder.
Jul 31 - 2:59 PM

Mariners acquired OF Chris Denorfia from the Padres for OF Abraham Almonte and RHP Stephen Kohlscheen.

Seattle had to do something to fortify an uninspiring outfield consisting of Endy Chavez, James Jones, and Dustin Ackley, and Denorfia will have to do. He never offered a ton with the bat, and provides even less now (.242/.293/.319), but is a good defender who the M's can comfortably slot into all three positions as needed.
Jul 31 - 2:45 PM

Brewers acquired OF Gerardo Parra from the Diamondbacks for OF Mitch Haniger and LHP Anthony Banda.

When he's in the lineup, Parra will team with Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun to give Milwaukee one of the majors' best defensive outfield alignments. Of course, this isn't great news for Khris Davis, or Parra himself, as the pair will now share at-bats. Parra is slashing only .259/.305/.362.
Jul 31 - 2:23 PM

Oscar Taveras is starting in right field for the Cardinals on Thursday against the Padres.

St. Louis dealt Allen Craig to Boston on Thursday afternoon (along with right-hander) Joe Kelly for John Lackey, so the right field job now belongs to Taveras. With a clearer path to playing time, the talented 21-year-old is worth owning in all mixed fantasy leagues.
Jul 31 - 2:09 PM

The Reds have dangled Mat Latos in trade discussions, reports ESPN's Jayson Stark.

Cincinnati isn't buying this season, and they may decide to sell -- perhaps even their ace. Reds general manager Walt Jocketty has seen the attractive packages front-line starters Jeff Samardzija and Jon Lester have garnered and may want in on the action. Latos has a 3.31 ERA in eight starts this year after missing the first two and a half months with injury.
