Shelby Miller (shoulder) is scheduled to make his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday vs. the Nationals.

Miller will follow Adam Wainwright, who is slated to start the afternoon tilt. The talented young right-hander battled some shoulder soreness last week, but he seems to be fully recovered now and remains a strong candidate for the final spot in the Cardinals' starting rotation. Miller carries great fantasy potential.

Mariners activated LHP James Paxton from the 15-day disabled list.

Paxton will return to the Mariners' starting rotation on Thursday night against the White Sox after missing the last 17 days with a bruised left elbow. He has a cool 3.53 ERA and 73/18 K/BB ratio in 81 2/3 innings this season with Seattle and should be safe for immediate activation in fantasy leagues.

Twins manager Paul Molitor confirmed Thursday that Joe Mauer is again having quad issues.

It's the reason Mauer was out of the lineup Wednesday and will sit again Thursday. He injured the quad last week while running the bases in Atlanta and could need a couple more games off, though Molitor said he's not ruling Mauer out for Friday night's series opener on the road against the Blue Jays. Trevor Plouffe is playing first base on Thursday versus the Tigers with Eduardo Escobar at third.

Eduardo Rodriguez (hamstring) has declared himself ready to start Sunday versus the Royals.

Rodriguez went all-out in a bullpen session Thursday at Tropicana Field and experienced no lingering discomfort in his left hamstring. He last started August 16 against the Orioles and made it through just four innings (hitless innings, by the way) before feeling hamstring tightness. The young left-hander owns a sharp 2.52 ERA in 39 1/3 innings (seven starts) since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket in mid-July.

Rangers purchased the contract of OF Carlos Gomez from Triple-A Round Rock.

He will start in left field for Texas on Thursday night against the Indians. Gomez signed a minor league contract with the Rangers last week after getting released by the Astros and earned the quick promotion by hitting .308/.357/.538 over 14 plate appearances at Round Rock. We doubt he's suddenly going to find himself again in Arlington, but stranger things have happened. Gomez was a back-to-back National League All-Star in 2013-2014 with the Brewers.

Red Sox placed OF Andrew Benintendi on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee sprain.

Benintendi fell awkwardly over his left leg while trying to avoid a tag at second base Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, appearing to badly injure both his left knee and left ankle. An MRI was scheduled for Thursday morning and doctors are apparently still reviewing the results. This could very well be season-ending for the 22-year-old top outfield prospect. Chris Young is starting in left field for the Red Sox on Thursday and figures to carry a big load in that spot down the stretch.
Aug 25 - 11:19 AM

Nationals acquired LHP Marc Rzepczynski from the Athletics for INF Max Schrock.

Rzepczynski has walked 24 batters and yielded 38 hits in 36 innings this season for a nasty 1.72 WHIP, but he has somehow managed a 3.00 ERA. Washington is desperate for bullpen help, especially from the left side. "Scrabble" will function in a lefty specialist role.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Dodgers have "rebuffed offers" for Yasiel Puig.

Heyman says teams "appear to be bottom feeding for Puig" -- in other words, making lowball trade proposals -- and the Dodgers are not actually that desperate to give him away. The polarizing 25-year-old outfielder is batting .396/.448/.698 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 14 games since his demotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City on August 2. Josh Reddick, meanwhile, is slashing .143/.211/.157 in 20 games since the Dodgers acquired him via trade from the A's. Puig is under contract with Los Angeles through 2018, with about $25 million still due.
Aug 25 - 10:51 AM

Sandy Leon is out of the Red Sox starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Rays.

Bryan Holaday will start at catcher and bat ninth in the finale at Tropicana Field. It's just a routine day off for Leon, who's been one of the best stories of the second half. He's sitting on a ridiculous .369/.425/.618 season slash line in 176 plate appearances.
Aug 25 - 10:16 AM

David Ortiz is getting the day off Thursday.

Hanley Ramirez will start at DH, Travis Shaw will play first base, and Aaron Hill will get the nod at third base in the early-afternoon finale at Tropicana Field.

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said late Wednesday that Daniel Hudson will likely be moved into a late-inning role.

Hale didn't officially anoint Hudson as the team's new closer, but it's a decent bet he gets the next save opportunity. Hudson earned his 17th hold of the season on Wednesday night against the Braves and has now gone 10 straight appearances without allowing a run after struggling badly in July. Enrique Burgos, meanwhile, has surrendered seven earned runs over his last three innings of work, including four earned Wednesday versus Atlanta. Hale also mentioned Randall Delgado as a possible late-inning guy for the stretch run. Arizona's bullpen is such a mess.

Jordan Zimmermann (lat) is set to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Toledo.

Zimmermann received clearance after making it through another bullpen session on Wednesday. The right-hander has been out since August 6 with a strained lat muscle and may require multiple rehab outings. He had allowed 32 runs -- 29 earned -- over his last 31 innings with Detroit, ballooning his season ERA to 4.44.
