Javier Vazquez has been ruled out of the World Baseball Classic and will not pitch in the majors this season.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal confirms the report. Vazquez underwent knee surgery last month, and can no longer represent his native Puerto Rico. And despite the fact that he drew interest from several big league teams in the offseason, it sounds like the knee injury is going to be enough to scare off any legitimate offers. James Wagner of the Washington Post suggests Vazquez is considering retirement.

Kris Bryant (hand) is out of the Cubs' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Reds.

Bryant took a pitch off his left hand in the ninth inning Tuesday, but X-rays turned up negative and it sounds like he could return for Thursday's series finale in Cincinnati. Tommy La Stella is starting at third base and batting sixth Wednesday versus Reds right-hander Asher Wojciechowski.

Mariners activated RHP David Phelps from the 10-day disabled list.

Phelps made it through a 20-pitch simulated inning Monday without issue and will be available out of the Mariners' bullpen on Wednesday night in Atlanta. The setup man missed a little over two weeks with a right elbow impingement.

Marcus Semien (wrist) is back in the Athletics' starting lineup on Wednesday against the Orioles.

Semien sat out Tuesday after making an early exit from Monday's series opener in Baltimore when he irritated the scar tissue around his surgically-repaired right wrist, but the 26-year-old is starting at shortstop and batting second Wednesday versus Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy. Semien has slashed .249/.333/.381 with five home runs and seven stolen bases in 51 games this season.

Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Thursday in the Gulf Coast League.

Minor league seasons are coming to an end, so the Marlins will have to get creative as they bring Chen along in his rehab. The 32-year-old left-hander has been on the disabled list since May 5 with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow. He may make a start or two for Miami before the end of the MLB regular season, but it's definitely not something to count on.
Aug 23 - 11:10 AM

David Wright (shoulder, back) started at DH and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in his rehab debut Tuesday with High-A St. Lucie.

It was the first live game Wright had played at any level this season. "There's still quite a bit to go to where I want to be, but it was a good first step," he told reporters afterward. "[My back and shoulder] felt pretty good. There are going to be some challenges ahead, I'm sure ... Certainly sooner rather than later I want to see some results, have some better at-bats. It's not going to come overnight." The veteran third baseman is aiming to join the Mets for the final few weeks of the 2017 regular season.

Kyle Gibson was dominant in Tuesday's win over the White Sox, punching out eight over seven innings of one-run ball.

The right-hander scattered seven hits and a walk in the contest. The only blemish on his night was allowing Yoan Moncada to score on a wild pitch in the first inning. Gibson now sits at 7-10 on the season with a disappointing 5.76 ERA and 1.68 WHIP. He'll look to replicate this fine performance when he squares off against the Blue Jays in Toronto on Sunday.
Aug 23 - 1:02 AM

Yangervis Solarte had a monster night at the dish Tuesday in St. Louis, homering and doubling twice as part of a six-RBI showing.

Solarte got the scoring going with a bases-clearing double in the third inning off of Lance Lynn, and he got to Lynn again in the fifth with another RBI double. The infielder capped off his night with a mammoth two-run blast off of Josh Lucas in the eighth that went an estimated 455 feet. Solarte has gone deep in two of his last three contests.
Aug 23 - 12:27 AM

Doug Fister turned back the clock Tuesday, spinning a one-hit complete game in the Red Sox' 9-1 win over the Indians.

Fister entered the night with a 5.56 ERA on the season and was roughed up by the same Indians in his last start. He permitted 11 baserunners over just 4 1/3 frames in that outing last week but yielded only the one hit and a couple walks in an unexpected gem Tuesday, shutting down the Tribe's offense after Francisco Lindor led off the bottom of the first with a home run. It's Fister's first complete game in three seasons. Fister will take on the Orioles at Fenway on Sunday and it's hard to trust him as a fantasy option even after his beauty Tuesday.
Aug 23 - 12:10 AM

Eduardo Nunez launched a three-run home run and a two-RBI double Tuesday against the Indians.

Nunez was hitless in his first three plate appearances of the night, but he saved his best for the later innings with a two-run double off of Carlos Carrasco and a three-run dinger off of Shawn Armstrong. The 30-year-old is now batting .330/.356/.557 across 21 games since joining the Red Sox.
Aug 22 - 11:52 PM

Kelvin Herrera experienced tightness in his right forearm in the ninth inning Tuesday.

Scott Alexander entered in the top of the ninth after Herrera loaded the bases with two outs and the 28-year-old left-hander secured his first career save. If this turns into a DL situation for Herrera, the Royals could turn to former Padres closer Brandon Maurer, though he hasn't been very good since coming over in a July 24 trade. Herrera will be reevaluated by the Royals' medical staff on Wednesday.
Aug 22 - 11:50 PM

Lucas Sims had the best start of his young career Tuesday, spinning six shutout frames in a 4-0 victory over the Mariners.

Sims yielded just two singles and a double on the night, walked two and punched out four batters. The 23-year-old had held his own in the majors before this one, but tonight’s outing was his first quality start since his debut on August 1. The swings and misses Sims got in the minors haven’t translated to this point, as he’s whiffed only 15 in 28 1/3 innings. The good news is he’s walked only eight, as the control improvements he made this year in the minors have carried over. Sims gets the Phillies on the road next.
