Daniel Murphy (intercostal strain) took swings Friday.

Good news, but Murphy is still around 10 days away from game action. However, even with the late start, he should have enough time to get ready for Opening Day.

ESPN's Keith Law hears that the Marlins are nearing a deal to acquire Fernando Rodney from the Padres.

Law says that the Padres will receive "a good A-ball prospect" in return. Rodney has had a fantastic season in San Diego, allowing just one earned run over 28 2/3 innings while sporting a 33/12 K/BB ratio. The trade is a big hit to his fantasy value, as he'll presumably slide into a setup role ahead of A.J. Ramos, who has converted all 24 of his save chances this season. The Padres might go with a committee in the ninth inning to replace Rodney, but Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer seem likely to get the first shot.

Andrew Cashner (neck) is expected to rejoin the Padres' rotation on Sunday against the Yankees.

Cashner tossed three scoreless innings for High-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, and that was enough to convince the Padres he was ready. The right-hander has put up a disappointing 4.75 ERA over 11 starts this season. The Padres are considering going with six starters for a while rather than remove someone from the rotation to accommodate Cashner.

Joc Pederson (shoulder) is not available to play Thursday.

Pederson is missing a second straight start with a bruised AC joint in his right shoulder, and he's not available off the bench, either. The hope is that he'll be ready to go sometime over the weekend. Trayce Thompson is again filling in in center field.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Steven Matz (elbow) "was seriously considering surgery, and maybe even leaning that way, before a meeting with the Mets brass."

Matz has already received one cortisone shot to combat left elbow pain brought upon by a bone spur. The southpaw has been told that he won't do any more damage pitching through the ailment, so he'll try to do so for now after having a start pushed back one day. However, surgery is still very much on the table at some point, particularly if he isn't terribly effective while pitching compromised.

Clayton Kershaw (back) received an epidural Wednesday and will be placed on the disabled list.

Well, that's a bummer. The Dodgers haven't revealed a specific diagnosis for Kershaw yet, and it appears that he's likely to be sidelined longer than the minimum 15 days. We'll just have to see how Kershaw recovers from his lower back injury before a timetable can be established. It's obviously a massive blow to the Dodgers and to fantasy owners even if his absence winds up being relatively brief. The Dodgers have yet to decide who will start in Kershaw's place on Friday.

Shi Davidi writes of Aaron Sanchez that "the talk now (is) that he may be strong enough to hang in as a starter all year long."

The Blue Jays have said previously that Sanchez will move to the bullpen at some point this season in an effort to keep his workload down, and just two weeks ago manager John Gibbons reiterated that stance. However, Sanchez has been so good as a starter that the club may be reconsidering things. It's possible they could ultimately just decide to skip and/or push back Sanchez a few times, although even if they did that the righty would still be looking at a large innings increase. He threw only 92 1/3 innings last season and is currently on pace for 213 1/3 frames this year. It's obviously a situation for fantasy owners to monitor closely.

Yasiel Puig (knee) is back in the Dodgers' lineup Thursday.

Puig was removed from Wednesday's game with a minor knee contusion, but he's fine. He's in right field and batting sixth against Zach Davies and the Brewers.

A Braves official told Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports that the club is "99.9 percent" sure they will not trade Julio Teheran before the deadline.

The 99.9 percent number came after the official said outright that the team is "not trading Teheran." That the Braves are inclined to keep Teheran isn't a surprise, as he's under control cheaply through 2020 and the club would like him to start on Opening Day next season in their new stadium. However, he'll be sought after next month, regardless (the Red Sox are one team that's reportedly already inquired), and the Braves will surely be open to a deal if they get an offer to their liking.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports that the Rangers are showing interest in Matt Moore.

Topkin says that the Rangers are "already hot on Moore's trail and 3-4 others are expected to join the pursuit." Moore has rebounded after a seven-start stretch where he put up a 7.71 ERA, posting a 2.36 ERA over his last four outings while striking out a batter per inning. The lefty is a wild card given his inconsistent results since returning from Tommy John surgery, but he makes sense as a potential lightning-in-a-bottle type acquisition given his upside. The Rays have three club options on Moore starting in 2017.

The Giants will forgo the DH and have Madison Bumgarner bat in his start in Oakland on Thursday.

If the Giants really thought batting Bumgarner in a game in Oakland were a smart play, it'd probably make more sense to actually let him DH once. By forgoing the DH while he's pitching, it means they'll be pinch-hitting for the pitcher after he leaves. On the other hand, it is Bumgarner in Oakland, so he's a threat to go eight or nine innings anyway. Bumgarner is hitting .175/.261/.350 with two homers in 40 at-bats this year.

Junior Guerra was magnificent in a 7-0 Brewers win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, firing eight scoreless innings while allowing only two hits and two walks.

He struck out seven batters. Guerra improved his record to 5-1 and is now sitting on a 3.25 ERA. He has 60 strikeouts and 21 walks in 69 1/3 innings across 11 starts. The 31-year-old rookie has a challenging two-start week versus the Nationals and Cardinals coming up.
