Nationals manager Davey Johnson said Friday that prospect infielder Anthony Rendon will not open the season in the majors.

The question was raised because Rendon is hitting .417 (5-for-12) with a home run, two doubles and five RBI so far this spring, but Johnson understandably believes that it's important that he gets regular playing time in the minor leagues. "No," said Johnson. "He needs the reps. He needs to go play." Rendon is considered a candidate to join the Nationals later this season, but it's not clear where he fits in the team's long-term plans.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle writes that it's possible Jesse Hahn (forearm) "will remain shut down."

The A's said in mid-July that Hahn, who is battling right forearm inflammation, would be shut down for at least a month. Given that they're out of playoff contention, it's possible they'll play it safe and just shut the righty down for the rest of the season. Forearm injuries often wind up leading to Tommy John surgery, and Hahn has already had the operation once.

Giancarlo Stanton admitted Saturday that his recovery from hamate bone surgery is "definitely slower" than expected.

Stanton resumed hitting off a tee recently but conceded that he's still feeling some pain in his left hand. "Getting decent -- the ball's coming off OK," Stanton said. "It's just the pain level of it." The Marlins had been hoping to get the outfielder back sometime in early August, but it sounds like it will be a bit longer. "I have to swing off the tee with no pain first, then we'll go from there," Stanton said. "I don't know when that will be. I'm just doing what I'm supposed to every day."

A.J. Burnett (elbow) will undergo an MRI on Monday.

Burnett admitted that he's had elbow pain off and on for a while and during his last start on Thursday it was "a little more than I expected, a little more than I could tolerate." The right-hander will not have surgery and conceded that it's possible he's thrown his last pitch. "I don't expect it to go away and I don't expect it to get better," he said. J.A. Happ has taken Burnett's spot in the Pirates' rotation.

Twins placed LHP Tommy Milone on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 1, with a mild left flexor strain.

Milone began feeling soreness after Friday's outing. That the Twins are calling the soreness mild is good news, but it's unclear how long the left-hander might be sidelined. Tyler Duffey will take Milone's spot in the rotation.

Red Sox placed RHP Rick Porcello on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 30, with right triceps inflammation.

Porcello began feeling soreness a day after he was ripped for six runs -- five earned -- and 10 hits in two-plus innings on Wednesday versus the White Sox. The Red Sox don't think it's a long-term issue, so he should rejoin the rotation later this month. Brian Johnson and Henry Owens are options to take his spot in the rotation.

Andrelton Simmons has been diagnosed with a sprained right thumb.

Simmons was injured on Saturday when he jammed the thumb on a play in left field. It looks like he'll avoid the disabled list for now, as the Braves are hopeful he'll only miss a few games. Daniel Castro is filling in at shortstop Sunday.

J.D. Martinez (knee) is back in the Tigers' lineup Sunday.

Martinez had to leave Saturday's game after fouling a ball off his left knee. X-rays came back clean, though, and he's feeling well enough to give it a go.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus confirmed Saturday that he'll "probably" use Alex Wilson as his closer.

Wilson notched his first career save on Thursday when he recorded the final five outs of the game and it appears that he's Ausmus' top option for the ninth inning following the trade of Joakim Soria. "I'll probably use Wilson at the back end, maybe (Blaine) Hardy at the back end if there are lefties," Ausmus said. "(Neftali) Feliz and (Bruce) Rondon hopefully can stretch through the seventh and eighth somehow." Wilson boasts a 1.79 ERA on the season, although he's struck out just 33 over 55 1/3 innings. He doesn't have typical closer stuff but obviously needs to be owned in all fantasy leagues.

Pablo Sandoval (forearm) remained out of the Red Sox' lineup Sunday.

He hasn't played since being hit on the left forearm by a pitch on Thursday. Sandoval remains day-to-day and should have a shot to return Tuesday after Monday's off day. Travis Shaw is at third base Sunday.

Kurt Suzuki went 2-for-4 with a walk-off RBI single in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Mariners.

The Twins faced a 2-1 deficit entering the ninth inning, but rallied with some nice situational hitting and a woeful bullpen performance from the M's. Miguel Sano led off the inning by doubling off Carson Smith, who recorded the next two outs, but also uncorked a wild pitch that allowed pinch-runner Shane Robinson to reach third. Following an intentional walk to Eddie Rosario, Smith delivered yet another wild pitch, which scored Robinson. Rosario would subsequently steal third before Suzuki ended the game with an RBI single. The heroics are fun, but they do little to mask the fact that the veteran catcher is hitting just .234/.290/.305 this season.

Kyle Gibson posted a stellar start against the Mariners in Saturday's no-decision, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings.

Gibson struck out four and walked one on the evening. A run came home in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Robinson Cano, but Gibson wouldn't allow another one until the sixth inning, when Nelson Cruz took him deep for a solo shot. The Twins would rally from the 2-1 deficit to win 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth. Gibson had allowed 12 runs in his last 10 1/3 innings (covering two starts) and this was a nice rebound. The owner of a 3.37 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 92/40 K/BB ratio in 131 innings, he will take to the road to face the Blue Jays' offensive machine in his next start.
