Will Middlebrooks (wrist) returned to the Red Sox lineup Saturday against the Twins.

Middlebrooks avoided serious injury and merely rustled scar tissue loose during Wednesday night's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. He was cleared by a hand specialist earlier this week and had already been cleared for batting practice. The talented young third baseman shouldn't have any trouble getting ready for the start of the season.

Sean Doolittle imploded in a big way on Wednesday, allowing five runs while only recording one out in the ninth inning against the Rangers.

A's skipper Bob Melvin called upon Doolittle with a 1-0 lead. The left-hander got the first batter out, but the situation unraveled quickly from there. Two straight hits were followed by an intentional walk, which itself was bookended by a J.P. Arencibia homer. A rattled Doolittle walked Robinson Chirinos before he finally got the hook; Chirinos later came around to score. Doolittle hadn't allowed a run since July 6 prior to tonight. The A's are now 17-27 since the beginning of August, including 6-12 in one-run games and 6-15 in road contests. That rotten stretch gift-wrapped the AL West for the Angels. If the A's don't pick it up quickly, they could get passed by the Mariners and miss the playoffs altogether.

C.J. Wilson fired seven shutout innings and yielded only one hit in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Mariners.

The Angels magic number to win the AL West has dropped to 1. Wilson whiffed seven and walked three in this gem, the lefty's third straight victory, a trick he pulled off for the first time this season. You shouldn't take that to mean he'd pitched particularly well prior to tonight, however, as Wilson allowed six runs (five earned) over 11 1/3 frames in the first two wins but received 23 runs of support. He didn't need much help tonight. Now 13-9 with a 4.42 ERA, Wilson has a pivotal matchup against the A's on deck.
Sep 18 - 1:03 AM

Adam Wainwright threw his third shutout of the season in Wednesday's 2-0 victory over the Brewers.

Wainwright was tremendous, needing only 102 pitches to cover his nine scoreless frames. That's the fewest pitches he's thrown in any of his nine career shutouts. The ace right-hander hit a rough patch in July and August, but he's been locked in over his last three starts and will bring a 2.45 ERA and 1.05 WHIP into his next scheduled outing on the road against the Cubs.
Sep 17 - 11:00 PM

Francisco Liriano navigated around control problems, allowing one run over six innings to pick up his sixth win of the season on Wednesday against the Red Sox.

Liriano walked five, the most he'd allowed in a single start since July 13. Otherwise, he scattered three hits and struck out two in the effort. Liriano's scoreless innings streak ended at 20 when he allowed a run to score on a Xander Bogaerts ground out in the fifth inning. The lefty owns a 3.45 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 163/73 K/BB ratio. He'll match-up with the Braves in Atlanta on Monday next.
Sep 17 - 10:57 PM

Steve Pearce swatted a pair of home runs and knocked in four runs in Wednesday's victory against the Blue Jays.

Pearce broke a scoreless tie with a solo shot off of J.A. Happ in the third inning, then made it 4-0 with a three-run shot off of Happ in the fifth. The 31-year-old journeyman now has 20 home runs, 48 RBI, and a .297/.375/.560 slash line. The Orioles, who clinched the AL East on Tuesday, have won 17 of their last 21 contests.
Sep 17 - 10:43 PM

Carlos Carrasco pitched a two-hitter for his first career shutout Wednesday as the Indians beat the Astros 2-0.

Carrasco fanned 12. Both hits he surrendered were infield singles to Jose Altuve, and he also walked just one batter in the 98-pitch gem. This comes 10 days after he came within an out of a shutout against the White Sox. He's been one of baseball's very best pitchers the last six weeks; he's allowed one or no runs in seven of his last eight starts.
Sep 17 - 10:41 PM

Andrelton Simmons left Wednesday's game after tweaking his ankle and Achilles.

Simmons said the injury wasn't bad, and he exited the clubhouse without a noticeable limp. He's day-to-day, but it doesn't sound like something that will keep him out of the lineup long, if at all.
Sep 17 - 10:30 PM

Christian Yelich went 1-for-3 with an RBI double, two walks, and a stolen base in Wednesday's win against the Mets.

Yelich's seventh-inning RBI double proved to be the deciding factor in the win. He added in his 20th stolen base of the season, and is now slashing .292/.372/.414. Quite a solid season for the 22-year-old.
Sep 17 - 10:28 PM

X-rays on Jason Heyward's left thumb came back negative.

Heyward left in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game after the thumb, which has caused him problems previously this season, acted up. It appears he's day-to-day for now, but his status should be clearer when he shows up to the ballpark Friday.
Sep 17 - 10:25 PM

Brandon McCarthy picked up his eighth win as a Yankee, holding the Rays to two runs over seven innings on Wednesday.

McCarthy was on point yet again, relenting just four hits and a walk to the Rays while striking out four. In 13 starts since joining the Yankees, the right-hander has a 2.54 ERA with a 74/13 K/BB ratio in 85 innings. McCarthy will take on the Orioles at home on Monday in his next outing.
Sep 17 - 10:12 PM

According to Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly, the Phillies are one of the teams that have interest in Cuban outfielder Yasmani Tomas.

Salisbury, speaking about Tomas' workout in the Dominican Republic set for Sunday, said "you can bet" the Phillies will be in attendance. He also cited sources who believe the Phils have "legitimate interest" in going hard after the 23-year-old. They're not the only ones, as nearly every team is expected to be represented at his upcoming workout. Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe recently reported Tomas could receive a contract worth upwards of $100 million.
