Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Monday that re-signing Jose Valverde is still "not in the picture."

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Saturday that Leyland was pushing for the Tigers to bring back Valverde, but Leyland insisted Monday morning that he has had no discussions on the topic with the Detroit front office. Bruce Rondon has been a mess so far in camp, but the Tigers seem committed to filling the vacant closer role from within. Valverde's free agency rolls on.

Miguel Cabrera made an early exit from the second half of Saturday's doubleheader with the White Sox after appearing to aggravate his lingering right ankle injury.

It was overly ambitious of the Tigers to think that Cabrera -- who has been limping around for weeks -- could gut it out for both games. He looked to be in serious discomfort on a groundout in the top of the fourth inning and did not take the field for the bottom of the fourth. Cabrera can probably be considered day-to-day through the rest of 2014.

Dustin Pedroia left Saturday's game against the Rays with an apparent head injury.

Pedroia got struck in the face by Kevin Kiermaier's forearm on a collision at the second base bag in the bottom of the second inning. Brock Holt moved from third base to second base and Will Middlebrooks took over at the hot corner. The Red Sox should provide an update on Pedroia at some point Saturday night.

Mark Melancon picked up his 26th save of the season Saturday in the Pirates' 3-2 defeat of the Reds.

Melancon retired all three batters he faced in the top of the ninth inning, one via strikeout. He owns a dominant 2.04 ERA, 0.89 WHIP, and 54/9 K/BB ratio in 57 1/3 frames this season for the Bucs.

Hanley Ramirez (leg) is in the Dodgers' starting lineup Saturday night against the Padres.

Hanley was not on the original lineup card, but he felt good in a pregame workout so manager Don Mattingly gave him the go-ahead. Ramirez suffered a minor left leg injury Friday in the Dodgers' 12th-inning loss.
Aug 30 - 6:25 PM

Omar Infante (shoulder) is back in the Royals' starting lineup Saturday night against the Indians.

Infante had been sidelined since Monday with a lingering right shoulder injury and acknowledged Saturday that he is still experiencing discomfort. But the veteran second baseman wants to play through the pain as the Royals try to reach the playoffs for the first time since 1985. "It’s not going to subside," manager Ned Yost said. "Forget it subsiding. He’s probably at about 80 percent right now, which is good enough to play."
Aug 30 - 6:14 PM

Matt Garza (oblique) has been cleared to rejoin the Brewers' rotation Wednesday versus the Cubs.

Garza, out since August 4 with a left oblique strain, threw all of his pitches in a successful simulated game Friday evening in San Francisco. Jimmy Nelson was optioned to the minors on Saturday afternoon and will return as a reliever when rosters expand, freeing up a rotation spot for Garza.
Aug 30 - 6:00 PM

Coco Crisp is not in the A's lineup Saturday.

Crisp came up sore after crashing into the center field wall Friday while trying to rob Chris Iannetta of a home run. Sam Fuld is leading off and Craig Gentry is playing center on Saturday night against the Angels.
Aug 30 - 5:05 PM

An MRI taken Saturday on Desmond Jennings' left knee showed no major damage.

Jennings is aiming to return to the Rays' starting lineup on Sunday after sitting out Friday and Saturday. The 27-year-old outfielder has 10 homers and 15 stolen bases in 123 games this season for Tampa Bay, but he's registered a disappointing .244/.319/.378 slash line.
Aug 30 - 5:01 PM

Chris Sale picked up his 11th victory of the season on Saturday, striking out 13 in the first game of a doubleheader against the Tigers.

Sale surrendered three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in his seven innings of work. All of the damage against him came in the first inning, where Ian Kinsler belted a solo homer and Victor Martinez added a two-run blast, but Sale settled in nicely afterwards and dominated the rest of the afternoon. Now 11-3 on the season, he'll look to improve upon his outstanding 2.11 ERA and 0.94 WHIP when he does battle against the Indians in Cleveland on Friday.
Aug 30 - 4:37 PM

Red Sox activated SS Xander Bogaerts from the 7-day disabled list.

Bogaerts began exhibiting concussion-like symptoms after taking a Felix Hernandez pitch off his helmet last Friday, so the Red Sox decided to play it safe with their young shortstop. He'll be back in action Saturday night.
Aug 30 - 4:29 PM

George Springer (quad) still isn't able to run at 100 percent effort.

Springer took batting practice earlier this week and has done some other baseball-related activities, but the big hurdle for him will be running the bases and it doesn't sound like he's close to doing that. The dynamic young outfielder said "I hope so" when asked Saturday if he expects to return before the end of the season.
