Joey Votto has officially committed to Team Canada for the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

Votto wanted to test out his surgically-repaired knee in Reds camp before fully committing to the event. He feels good and should do some real damage for his native country. Team Canada starts play this Thursday.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post was told by an executive that Justin Upton "will be moved" this offseason.

The Braves dealt Jason Heyward earlier this week, but they don't plan to stop there. Like Heyward, Upton is set for free agency after next season, and the interest in him, according to Sherman, is "significant." Sherman adds that the price is steep, with the Braves looking for a bigger package than it took to land Heyward. The Mariners have long had interest in Upton and would appear to be a fit.

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that the Cubs, Dodgers and White Sox have talked to the Diamondbacks about a trade involving Miguel Montero.

It's not clear how far along the talks with those teams have gotten, but Piecoro does note that the inquiries "have not picked up significantly" since the Russell Martin signing. The D'Backs are shopping Montero in hopes of clearing some payroll space, possibly so that they can add some pitching.
Nov 21 - 10:20 AM's Jesse Sanchez reports that the Padres and Braves "have emerged as the favorites" for Yasmany Tomas.

The Phillies had universally been considered the favorites to sign the Cuban slugger, but they've apparently now bowed out. Sanchez that Tomas is seeking $15 million per season on a 5-7 year deal, though he hasn't ruled out the possibility of signing a shorter-term, higher-value deal that would allow him to hit free agency again sooner. The Braves are a new entrant into the Tomas sweepstakes and might have to make another trade or two in order to clear space for the outfielder.
Nov 21 - 9:24 AM

Dodgers acquired RHP Joel Peralta and LHP Adam Liberatore from the Rays in exchange for RHPs Jose Dominguez and Greg Harris.

The Rays exercised Peralta's $2.5 million option for 2015 earlier this month (he has $2.5 million club options for 2016 and 2017, as well) but have now decided to deal him for a bit of payroll space. The 38-year-old put up a 3.58 ERA and 293/84 K/BB ratio over 269 1/3 frames the last four years for the Rays and will work in a setup role for the Dodgers.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Reds "have engaged in preliminary discussions" about a trade involving Jay Bruce.

Rosenthal adds that the Padres are one of the clubs the Reds have spoken to about Bruce. Although they're not committing to dealing the outfielder, the Reds are weighing a variety of options as they consider trimming the payroll. Bruce is coming off the worst season of his career, but the Reds attribute at least part of his struggles to coming back too soon from knee surgery. Rosenthal says the outfielder rejected two contract extension proposals before the 2014 season. Bruce is under control through 2017.

Pirates designated 1B Ike Davis for assignment.

He was going to be non-tendered, so he'll now have a little extra time to find a new home. Davis batted .233/.344/.378 with 11 home runs and 51 RBI over 143 games between the Mets and Pirates in 2014. His days as a starting first baseman might very well be over.
Nov 20 - 7:04 PM

Rays designated C Jose Molina for assignment.

Assuming he's not claimed on waivers (which is highly unlikely), the Rays will eat the $2.75 million he's owed in 2015. Molina, 39, batted an ugly .178/.230/.187 in 2014 but still could catch on as a backup somewhere given his defense and pitch-framing ability.

Major league sources told MLB Daily Dish that if the Nationals trade Ryan Zimmerman or Doug Fister, it could open up room to sign Max Scherzer.

Earlier on Thursday, it was reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today that the Nationals were looking to move Doug Fister. Ryan Zimmerman also told the Washington Post that he had not had discussions about a contract extension with the team. Should either Fister or Zimmerman (or both) be shipped out of town, it's possible that it would free up room for the Nationals to target Max Scherzer. Scherzer's most likely landing place is probably back with the Tigers, while the Yankees have also been mentioned, though only as lurkers. For now.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Braves are a dark horse in the Yasmany Tomas sweepstakes.

Tomas is scheduled to attend MLB's Winter Meetings (December 7-11) in San Diego, so he probably won't sign before then. The Phillies, Padres, and Giants have been linked most frequently to the 23-year-old Cuban defector, but Atlanta could be ready to pounce if the price tag falls into a range that they're comfortable with. Initial reports had Tomas seeking a $100 million contract, but that number seems to be dropping.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Blue Jays are among the teams pursuing Torii Hunter.

The Royals, Twins, Cubs, Rangers, Giants, and Mariners have also been linked to the 39-year-old free agent outfielder. Hunter showed in 2014 that he is not quite finished, batting .286/.319/.446 with 17 home runs and 83 RBI in 142 games for the Tigers. It sure sounds like he's going to be able to command a multi-year deal.
Nov 20 - 12:47 PM

Doug Fister "is available if a deal makes sense," according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Fister is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2015 season, so the Nats are dangling him on the trade market in the event that they're presented with an attractive return package. They're doing the same with Jordan Zimmermann, who is also entering his contract year. Fister, 30, posted a stellar 2.41 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 164 innings this past season for Washington.
