Nolan Arenado ripped his third homer in as many games in Monday's loss to the Mariners.

The young third baseman also added a double for good measure, improving his Cactus League average to .412 to go along with four longballs. Arenado had a disappointing season at Double-A in 2012 and is likely to start the year back in the minors, but the Rockies haven't ruled out him cracking the Opening Day roster if he continues to hit.

Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel suspects the Brewers will call up top pitching prospect Jimmy Nelson to start Saturday against the Cardinals.

Nelson was sharp in a spot start in late May against the Marlins and owns a lights-out 1.46 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 114/32 K/BB ratio over 111 innings this season at Triple-A Nashville. If he pitches well against second-place St. Louis, he could be up in the majors for good. The 25-year-old right-hander is worth grabbing in all standard mixed fantasy leagues.

ESPN's Jayson Stark hears that the Rockies want a "young impact starter" in return for Jorge De La Rosa.

Stark adds that the Rockies are "very unlikely" to find such a return given that De La Rosa owns a rough 4.75 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 18 starts this season and is set to become a free agent this winter. Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday that the Orioles are "monitoring" the 33-year-old left-hander, but it doesn't sound like the two teams are going to be able to find a common ground for a trade. The O's would be taking a step backward if they moved one of their young pitching prospects for a mediocre rental.

Carlos Beltran was diagnosed with two small facial fractures after Wednesday's batting practice mishap.

Beltran had to be scratched from the Yankees' starting lineup on Wednesday night after a ball that he hit ricocheted off the protective "L" screen and struck him in the face. "You don't expect that to happen when you're practicing," the veteran said late Wednesday. "I had a headache for the whole day. Now it's getting better. Hopefully tomorrow it will get better and I could be back soon."

Jered Weaver (back) is expected to make his next scheduled start Saturday against the Rangers.

Weaver made an early departure from his outing Monday against the Blue Jays with tightness in his lower back, but he played catch Tuesday and felt fine. The right-hander owns a 3.50 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 93/33 K/BB ratio in 118 1/3 innings this season for the Angels.
Jul 10 - 11:29 AM

Ryan Braun (back) is in the Brewers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon versus the Phillies.

Braun missed a couple of games with back spasms and is hitting fifth for Milwaukee in his return to action Thursday. He has only batted fifth three other times in his career. The last time he did was September 2008.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Rockies intend to re-sign impending free agent Michael Cuddyer.

Which obviously means that the veteran outfielder won't be made available around the July 31 trade deadline. The Rockies have a crowded outfield (with some good, cost-controlled young players) but team owner Dick Monfort loves Cuddyer's presence in the clubhouse and the feeling is that he wouldn't attract much of a return package on the trade market because of his current left shoulder injury. Negotiations toward a contract extension could begin later this summer.

Brandon Phillips (thumb) is not in the Reds' starting lineup Thursday afternoon versus the Cubs.

Phillips suffered a sprained left thumb while attempting to make a diving play on defense Wednesday night. The second baseman looked to be in a great deal of pain as he was helped off the field and could be held out until after the All-Star break. Ramon Santiago is starting at second for the Reds on Thursday against Chicago.
Jul 10 - 10:01 AM

Billy Hamilton (hamstring) is not in the Reds' starting lineup on Thursday versus the Cubs.

Hamilton tweaked a lingering left hamstring injury in his final at-bat Wednesday night. The speedy center fielder expects to be good to go in a couple of days. Chris Heisey is playing center and leading off Thursday.
Jul 10 - 9:57 AM

Yadier Molina will undergo an MRI on his sprained right thumb to determine the severity of the injury.

Molina will undergo the tests Wednesday night, with the results coming back sometime Thursday. Once the extent of the injury is known, it will shed some more light on how much time the All-Star catcher might miss. Tony Cruz will start in Molina's place on Thursday and perhaps through the weekend. Molina suffered the sprain Wednesday on an awkward slide into third base.
Jul 10 - 12:03 AM

Mark Teixeira went 2-for-6, homering twice, as the Yankees won in extra innings against the Indians on Wednesday.

Teixeira hit a solo shot off of Josh Tomlin in the fourth inning, and then hit a two-run shot off of Tomlin in the fifth. The first baseman now has 17 on the season along with 47 RBI and a .241/.338/.470 slash line.
Jul 10 - 12:00 AM

Jacoby Ellsbury broke a 4-4 tie in the 14th inning, blasting a solo home run to right field in Wednesday's win over the Indians.

Ellsbury went 3-for-7 with a double on the evening overall. The home run brought his slugging percentage back over .400, as he's now slashing .282/.347/.403 with six home runs, 41 RBI, and 25 stolen bases.
