Andrew Cashner (thumb) could make his Cactus League debut as soon as next week.

Cashner still hasn't thrown a bullpen session, so he still has some hurdles to cross. The 26-year-old required emergency surgery in December after suffering a lacerated tendon in his right thumb during a hunting accident, but he's still hoping to be ready for the start of the season.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Dexter Fowler is "not 100 percent over the soreness."

Fowler sat out Sunday with "general soreness" before playing in four straight, but he's out of the lineup again Friday. It seems fair to question whether it might actually be Fowler's hamstring that's bothering him again and the Cubs just don't want to divulge that information. The veteran outfielder was activated from the disabled list a week ago after missing over a month of action. The Cubs have Jason Heyward in center field, Ben Zobrist in right and Javier Baez at second base Friday.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reports that the Rangers "continue to be the most aggressive team" in the pursuit of Chris Sale.

Nightengale says the White Sox are asking for Joey Gallo and Nomar Mazara in any deal involving Sale and it doesn't appear they're willing to budge. You can understand why their asking price would be so sky-high, but it's also understandable why the Rangers are declining. Sale still seems unlikely to be traded before the deadline, although a lot can change between now and Monday afternoon.

Taijuan Walker (foot) will make a rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma on Monday.

Walker got through another bullpen session Friday with no issues, clearing the way for his return to game action. He's only missed about three weeks of action, so Walker might need just the one rehab outing before rejoining the Mariners' rotation.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Nationals have inquired on Mark Melancon.

Rosenthal adds that there are "multiple teams" pursuing the closer. The Pirates are in the thick of the Wild Card hunt, but it appears they still might consider trading Melancon, who is an impending free agent. Rosenthal notes that the Nats have also inquired on Wade Davis, as they seem likely to acquire a reliever this weekend with Jonathan Papelbon struggling.

Nelson Cruz (foot) is back in the Mariners' lineup Friday.

Cruz missed a game after fouling a ball off his foot, but he's fine. He's in right field and batting cleanup against Jon Lester and the Cubs.

Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that Matt Moore is "emerging as the likeliest trade candidate" from the Rays' rotation.

The Rays are listening on Jake Odorizzi, Drew Smyly and even Chris Archer, but Moore has always seemed to be the most likely to be shipped elsewhere. Swingman Erasmo Ramirez could also be traded. Moore has been frustratingly inconsistent in his time in Tampa but holds a 2.39 ERA over his last nine starts and the Rays have club options on him through 2019 totaling a reasonable $26.5 million. The Rangers and Pirates are among the teams poking around.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Carter Capps is also going to the Padres in the Andrew Cashner deal.

He adds that Tayron Guerrero is headed to the Marlins, too, as this trade just keeps getting bigger. Capps is currently recovering from Tommy John surgery but has been dominant when healthy, posting a 1.16 ERA and 58/7 K/BB ratio over 31 innings last season. He's a big health risk with his unorthodox delivery and big velocity but should be a shutdown reliever as long as the Padres can keep him on the mound. Guerrero has flashed triple-digit heat himself and is under team control for many years.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Orioles have had trade discussions with the Rays regarding Erasmo Ramirez.

They would be interested in using Ramirez as a starter, as he evidently represents a backup plan after they missed out on Andrew Cashner. Ramirez has been used almost exclusively as a reliever this season and hasn't gone more than two innings since mid-May, so obviously it will take a bit for his stamina to be built back up. He holds a 3.90 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 46/16 K/BB ratio over 60 innings this season and is under team control through 2019.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that the Marlins are also receiving Colin Rea in the Andrew Cashner trade.

They wanted to acquire two starters at the deadline and have done it in one fell swoop. Like Cashner, Rea has had a shaky season with a 4.98 ERA over 99 1/3 innings. He's just 26 and is under team control through 2021 and the hope is that he'll develop into a solid back-end starter.

Nationals manager Dusty Baker was non-committal on his closer after pulling Jonathan Papelbon in the middle of a save chance Thursday.

Baker has indicated in recent days that he might make a change in the ninth inning, and he didn't hesitate to give Papelbon the hook after he allowed a one-out single and a walk to the Giants. Oliver Perez retired two of the next three batters and then Shawn Kelley closed things out by striking out Angel Pagan. Kelley is probably the favorite for saves in Washington right now, although it wouldn't be a surprise to see the club add a reliever before the trade deadline. "We’ve certainly got to figure something out here," Baker said.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Marlins "have an agreement in place" to acquire Andrew Cashner from the Padres.

They're also getting Colin Rea and Tyron Guerrero and reportedly giving up Jarred Cosart, Carter Capps, Josh Naylor and Luis Castillo. Cashner has put up an unimpressive 4.76 ERA over 16 starts this season, but he's pitched well in his last three outings and the Marlins are obviously hoping to catch lighting in a bottle here. The 29-year-old righty will be a free agent this offseason.
