David Ortiz (Achilles) ran the bases again Tuesday.

Ortiz did it with "less duration and intensity" than his Monday workout, according to the Boston Globe's Pete Abraham, but it still represents another step in the right direction. The veteran designated hitter is aiming to begin appearing in Grapefruit League games by the weekend. He should be fine for Opening Day.

Mets manager Mickey Callaway indicated Tuesday that he might not have a dedicated closer in 2018.

Instead, Callaway would prefer to make his decisions based on the situation. It's a refreshing way to think about things, though obviously any plan is subject to change. Jeurys Familia and A.J. Ramos are at the top of the depth chart, but the Mets could still add another name to the mix soon.

The Cardinals have emerged as the favorites to acquire Marcell Ozuna from the Marlins, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Nightengale notes that "no decision" has been made yet, but chatter has picked up since the club was able to trade Giancarlo Stanton. It's worth remembering that the Cardinals were in the mix for Stanton, so the Marlins already have a pretty good idea about what they like in the club's minor league system. Ozuna has also draw interest from the likes of the Rangers, Nationals, Rockies, and Blue Jays.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Phillies have had "ongoing discussions" with free agent reliever Addison Reed.

The Phillies have reportedly inked Pat Neshek to a two-year, $16.25 million contract, but they apparently aren't done improving their bullpen. Reed will be more costly and perhaps require another year. He posted a 2.84 ERA and 76/15 K/BB ratio over 76 innings this season between the Mets and the Red Sox.
Dec 12 - 2:03 PM

Rays acquired INF Ryan Schimpf from the Padres for INF Deion Tansel.

Schimpf hit just .158 with a .284 on-base percentage in 53 games with the Padres this past season, but he put up 14 homers and a .424 slugging percentage. The 29-year-old strikes out a ton and hits the ball in the air more than anyone, so putting up a decent batting average will be a struggle, but there's no doubting his power. The Rays are willing to take a chance to see where he could fit.
Dec 12 - 1:44 PM

Padres acquired 3B Chase Headley, RHP Bryan Mitchell and cash considerations from the Yankees for OF Jabari Blash.

This is strictly a salary dump for the Yankees while the Padres are willing to take a shot on Mitchell turning the corner. Headley, who turns 34 next May, batted .273/.352/.406 with 12 homers and 61 RBI over 147 games this past season. He's owed $13 million in 2018. The reunion with Headley gives the Padres some flexibility to consider other trades.
Dec 12 - 1:33 PM

According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, "at least 10 teams" have inquired on Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich.

Marcell Ozuna is being shopped at this week's Winter Meetings, but Yelich could be the bigger prize. While Ozuna has two years of team control remaining, Yelich is owed $43.25 million through 2021 with a $15 million club option (or a $1.25 million buyout) for 2022. Frisaro hears that the Braves, Diamondbacks, and Cardinals are among the teams who have checked in on Yelich so far.
Dec 12 - 1:29 PM

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that the Orioles want "two young, controllable starting pitchers" back in a trade for Manny Machado.

The Orioles don't expect to re-sign Machado, so they appear willing to seriously consider offers from interested teams. No word on which team might have the advantage in trade talks, but the Cardinals have been mentioned as a possibility. One interesting side note from Rosenthal is that Machado wants to move to shortstop for his final year before free agency.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the Yankees have Tigers right-hander Michael Fulmer and Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin on their radar.

If there's any team that could come up with the sort of package required to motivate the Tigers to move Fulmer, it's the Yankees. Corbin won't be nearly as costly via trade. He made $3.95 million via arbitration in 2017 and is due to become a free agent after 2018.
Dec 12 - 11:04 AM

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, free agent second baseman Neil Walker is seeking a four-year deal.

Walker is 32 years old and had back surgery last year, so it's probably unrealistic. Teams also have multiple alternatives available on the trade front. Walker batted .265/.362/.439 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI in 111 games this past season between the Mets and Brewers.
Dec 12 - 11:02 AM

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, agent Scott Boras is trying to engage the Nationals on free agent starter Jake Arrieta.

The Nationals have a strong history with Boras clients, so the possibility can't be ruled out, but the club already has big money tied up in key pieces and Bryce Harper (another Boras client) is one year away from free agency. They could aim lower to fill out their rotation.
Dec 12 - 11:01 AM

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports writes that the Padres are "thinking big" and remain "strongly" in the mix for free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer.

The Padres aren't messing around, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that members of the front office met with Hosmer last Thursday. Based on the early reports, they are the most aggressive team thus far. However, it's likely going to take a $100-plus million contract in order to land him. If the Padres were to sign Hosmer, they'd move Wil Myers back to the outfield.
