Jay Bruce smacked a pair of solo homers in Tuesday's loss to the Angels.

He took Tommy Hanson deep in the second inning and then took southpaw Scott Downs over the boards in the fourth. Bruce missed a few days of action last week with a heel issue, but it's obviously no longer a problem.

Brandon Moss is absent from the Cardinals' starting lineup Tuesday night against the Brewers.

Matt Carpenter will be at first base and Tommy Pham will be in left field at Miller Park in Milwaukee. This appears to be a routine night off for Moss.

Dexter Fowler is out of the Cubs' starting lineup on Tuesday night against the Pirates.

Ben Zobrist will also take the night off. Matt Szczur is in center field and batting eighth and Javier Baez is at second base and batting leadoff versus Chad Kuhl.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports Yasiel Puig has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team.

The Dodgers can now try to work out a trade with that team, though it seems unlikely to actually happen. If they want to deal him, they'd be better served waiting until the offseason when they can negotiate freely with all 29 other major league organizations. Puig, 25, is batting .369/.414/.631 with four home runs and 12 RBI in 18 games since his demotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City on August 2. He's owed around $25 million on a contract that runs through 2018.

Nelson Cruz is out of the Mariners' lineup Tuesday due to a nerve issue in his left hand.

Cruz felt discomfort on swings Sunday and Monday and will take at least one day of rest, possibly two. He's batting .154 (4-for-26) over his last seven games.

RotoGrinders.com Daily Slant: With Cruz out of the lineup, Cole Hamels' biggest concern is alleviated. It's still not going to be smooth sailing in hitter friendly Globe Life Park, but this is a huge blow for the Mariners who will now roll out the light hitting Shawn O'Malley and Ketel Marte as the table setters ahead of Robinson Cano and Franklin Gutierrez. The Mariners own a 21.6 K% against LHP while Hamels owns a solid 24.0 K% at home.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, former NFL player Tim Tebow "struggled against live pitching and received mixed reviews for his physical tools in a two-hour workout" Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Tebow put on a power show during batting practice, slugging eight balls over the wall at USC's Dedeaux Field, but he did not handle live pitching well and his throwing arm from the outfield rated as below average. "I thought he was OK. Better than I expected, to be honest," said one major league scout. "For not having played as long as he had, I thought he did OK." From another scout: "He looked like an actor trying to portray a baseball player." If he truly wants to see this through, Tebow might be best served to accept that winter league contract from Águilas del Zulia in Venezuela. It's not clear if any of the 20 or so MLB teams that attended Tuesday's workout plan to make him such an offer.

Nationals pitching coach Mike Maddux said he expects Stephen Strasburg (elbow) to be ready to come off the 15-day disabled list when first eligible next week.

Strasburg made it through an intensive bullpen session Monday without issue and will be allowed to skip a minor league rehab assignment. The ace right-hander landed on the disabled list August 22 with inflammation in his right elbow. He has a concerning 14.66 ERA over his last three starts with Washington.

Shelby Miller will return to the Diamondbacks' rotation Wednesday afternoon in San Francisco.

Miller allowed four earned runs on nine hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings in his final start with Triple-A Reno. He returns to a brutal 7.14 season ERA and can go on being ignored in standard fantasy leagues.
Aug 30 - 4:26 PM

Dustin Pedroia (personal) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup on Tuesday night.

Pedroia was excused from the club for two days to deal with a private family matter. The veteran is starting at second base and batting leadoff on Tuesday against Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi.
Aug 30 - 4:23 PM

Adam Jones (hamstring) is out of the Orioles' starting lineup again on Tuesday.

Jones tweaked his left hamstring late last week and remains day-to-day. Nolan Reimold is starting in center field and batting ninth Tuesday versus the Blue Jays.
Aug 30 - 4:21 PM

Yulieski Gurriel is out of the Astros' starting lineup on Tuesday against the Athletics.

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a run scored on Monday and is batting .389/.450/.500 over his first seven major league games, but the 32-year-old Cuban may still be dealing with some hamstring tightness. Alex Bregman is at third base and Evan Gattis is at DH on Tuesday night against A's right-hander Kendall Graveman.
Aug 30 - 4:19 PM

Steven Matz had a setback with his left shoulder and will no longer start Thursday versus the Marlins.

Matz landed on the disabled list August 22, retroactive to August 15, with a mild left shoulder strain and hasn't been able to get past the injury. Jacob deGrom will slide up a spot in the rotation and start Thursday against Miami. Mets manager Terry Collins said Tuesday that he's hopeful Matz will be ready sometime next week, but there are obviously no guarantees with any type of shoulder injury.
