Carlos Quentin (knee) likely to DH on Friday

Carlos Quentin (knee) will likely make his Cactus League debut as the designated hitter Friday against the White Sox.

Quentin was originally expected to make his spring debut early next week, so he's a bit ahead of schedule. The 30-year-old is being brought along slowly this spring following arthroscopic knee surgery, but he shouldn't need many at-bats to get ready.

Redmond: Marlins to use 'everybody' at closer

Marlins manager Mike Redmond said he plans to use "everybody" at closer.

Michael Dunn saved Sunday's game and Chad Qualls was warming up during a save chance Monday before the Marlins extended their lead. Former full-time closer Steve Cishek holds a 4.91 ERA and 1.42 WHIP on the year and has struggled against left-handed batters. "We’re going to use Cishek. We’ll use Qualls. We haven’t had that many save opportunities. We need those guys to pitch. We need Cishek to go down there and log some innings. He’s still going to close games. Qualls might close some games. Dunn might close some games. We need these guys to pitch we need them to stay sharp. They’re all going to contribute."

Victorino forced out with hamstring injury

Shane Victorino left Monday's game against the White Sox in the sixth inning with left hamstring tightness.

The immediate speculation was that Victorino aggravated his back ailment, but he apparently has a new malady to deal with. It's not clear at this point how serious the injury is. Jonny Gomes entered Monday's game after Victorino exited, with Daniel Nava moving from left to right field.

Salvador Perez leaves game with hip injury

Salvador Perez left Monday's game with a right hip injury.

Perez suffered the injury when he bumped into post at the Astros' dugout while chasing a foul popup. There's no word on the severity of the ailment, but the Royals should provide an update after the game. George Kottaras took Perez's spot behind the plate.

Westbrook (elbow) to throw off mound Tuesday

Jake Westbrook (elbow) plans to resume throwing from a mound on Tuesday.

It comes after he made 25 flat-ground throws from 60 feet on Sunday and 50 throws from 90 feet on Monday. Westbrook seems likely to need a rehab start or two before returning, but there's no word on when that might take place. He'll likely be back in early June if he can avoid a setback.

Corey Hart runs, takes batting practice Mon.

Corey Hart (knee) ran on the field and took full batting practice on Monday.

It's the first time he's done so since undergoing knee surgery. Hart admitted that the running was "awkward," but he could be ready for a rehab assignment in about a week. The assignment is expected to take a while, so it will likely be well into June before Hart is activated.

Detwiler (back) hopeful of making next start

Ross Detwiler reported improvement with his back Monday and hopes be ready to make his next start.

Detwiler is hoping he'll be ready to play catch on Monday before throwing from a mound later in the week. With an off day on Thursday, the Nationals can delay Detwiler's next turn a few days. Zach Duke is making a spot start in his place on Monday.

Eric O'Flaherty to have Tommy John surgery

Eric O'Flaherty will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday to repair a torn left ulnar collateral ligament.

It was inevitable after an MRI over the weekend revealed the bad news. In addition to obviously missing the rest of this season, O'Flaherty will likely be sidelined for the first couple months of the 2014 campaign, as well.

Werth (hamstring) could be out two more weeks

Jayson Werth (hamstring) will not be ready for activation from the disabled list on Friday and could be sidelined for as much as two more weeks.

Nationals manager Davey Johnson said he received an "alarming" report on Werth Monday, which obviously doesn't sound good. The outfielder experienced a setback with his hamstring during a rehab game last week and has yet to return to game action. He was slated to see a specialist over the weekend and evidently didn't receive good news. Roger Bernadina and Tyler Moore will continue to be the primary fill-ins for Werth.

David Freese (thumb) scratched from lineup

David Freese was scratched from Monday's lineup due to inflammation near his right thumb.

Freese was spiked during Sunday's game and required three stitches. He'll be available off the bench and could be ready to return to action on Tuesday. Ty Wigginton is getting the start at third base Monday.

Wash: Profar, Garcia will split time at 2B

Rangers manager Ron Washington said Jurickson Profar will split playing time with Leury Garcia at second base while Ian Kinsler is on the disabled list.

"Leury's going to get some time there," Washington said. "So when you see Profar sitting, don't be surprised." It's obviously not what fantasy owners that picked up Profar want to hear. He should still see most of the starts at second, but Washington wants to keep Garcia sharp.

Bryce Harper back in Nationals' lineup Monday

Bryce Harper (knee) is back in the Nationals' lineup Monday.

Harper sat out Saturday and Sunday due to soreness in his left knee caused by last week's collision with the outfield wall. He's probably still a little sore but is feeling well enough to give it a go.
