Mariano Rivera officially announced Saturday that he will retire after the 2013 season.

Rivera likely would have retired at the end of last year had he not torn his ACL, but this confirms earlier reports that this will be his final season. He'll make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday and expects to be ready for Opening Day. The all-time saves leader, Rivera should remain among the better fantasy closers in 2013.

Masahiro Tanaka was masterful in Thursday's shutout win over the Red Sox, allowing just three hits in a 3-0 victory.

Tanaka didn't do it with overpowering stuff, striking out just three, but he got 16 ground ball outs and needed just 97 pitches to finish the deed. The win was Tanaka's third in a row, and after a rocky start to the year he's now 3-1 with a 4.20 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. The 28-year-old will take on the struggling Blue Jays in his next start Tuesday.

Corey Kluber struck out a season-high 10 batters while allowing three runs over seven innings in the Indians' 4-3 win over the Astros on Thursday.

Kluber got off to a rocky start, allowing three runs through the first three innings, but he settled down to keep the Astros off the board for his final four frames. The win was his third in a row, improving him to 3-1 with a 4.19 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 37/12 K/BB ratio over 34 1/3 innings. Kluber will try to run his streak to four when he faces the Tigers in Detroit on Tuesday.

The Padres will hold a private workout with Cuban outfielder Luis Robert on Friday.

The workout will be held in the Dominican Republic. Robert worked out for the Reds on Tuesday and has also been scouted by the Athletics. He'll be free to sign with a team of his choosing beginning on May 20. The 19-year-old slashed .314/.409/.467 during his four seasons in the Cuban National Series.

Shelby Miller is evaluating his options after being diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his right elbow.

He's also dealing with a strained flexor tendon. We assumed the injury was serious when news spread of Miller sending his MRI results to Dr. James Andrews. Now Miller must decide whether to rehab his ailing elbow or undergo Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him for at least a year. The rehab route is not unprecedented—Garrett Richards and Masahiro Tanaka have both done it—but most pitchers opt for Tommy John. The injury is a devastating blow for Miller, who had been aiming for a bounce-back season after disappointing in his first year as a Diamondback.

Gary Sanchez (biceps) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.

Sanchez is progressing rapidly in his recovery from a strained biceps. He's resumed hitting in the batting cage and is already throwing up to 120 feet. Sanchez should be back in the Bronx before no time. Austin Romine has done most of the catching during his absence.

Matt Carpenter slugged a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the 11th inning Thursday as the Cardinals roared back to beat the Blue Jays 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Carpenter hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth and then ended the game with his four-run blast in the 11th, finishing 2-for-5 with a walk and five RBI in the afternoon victory. Randal Grichuk sent the game to extras with a game-tying two-run blast off Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna in the ninth. Carpenter, 31, is slashing .250/.373/.417 with three home runs and 10 RBI in 18 games this season.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi expects Didi Gregorius (shoulder) to be activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Gregorious is ready to roll after completing a five-game rehab assignment with High-A Tampa. It took him a little over a month to recover from a strained shoulder. With Gregorius taking over as the everyday shortstop, Ronald Torreyes will head back to the bench.
Apr 27 - 5:28 PM

Roberto Osuna took his third blown save in four tries after giving up a two-run homer in the ninth inning Thursday against the Cardinals.

Osuna has given up runs in four of six appearances since coming off the disabled list. The homer today was the first he's allowed and he does have a 5/0 K/BB ratio in six innings, so it's hardly time to lose hope. Still, the Jays might opt to give him a break from the closer's role after this one. If so, they could go to Joe Biagini over Jason Grilli.
Apr 27 - 4:38 PM

Yoenis Cespedes (hamstring) will go for an MRI on Friday.

This MRI will be "more detailed" than the one Cespedes underwent last week. Cespedes strained his left hamstring running the bases on Thursday and manager Terry Collins said he could be out "a while." The Mets have dropped six straight and now sit in last place in the NL East. Losing their best hitter for an extended stretch probably won't help matters.
Apr 27 - 4:35 PM

Matt Harvey, moved up in the rotation because Noah Syndergaard was scratched, gave up six runs and walked five in 4 1/3 innings Thursday in his start against the Braves.

Harvey looked strong in the first, but he lost command and velocity in the second. Maybe he was off because of the late notice that he'd be pitching in this one, but it was a really discouraging outing from a guy who had been throwing well.
Apr 27 - 4:28 PM

R.A. Dickey was removed from his start Thursday against the Mets due to a left quad spasm.

Dickey allowed three runs -- two earned -- over five innings before his departure. If it's truly just a spasm, the veteran knuckleballer should be fine for his next scheduled start.
