Aramis Ramirez (knee) is back in the Brewers' lineup Friday.

The third baseman had tested out his knee in every drill but sliding, and he's apparently now done that, as well. Ramirez wound up missing just under two weeks of action with a sprained left knee.

Denard Span is out of Thursday's lineup for the Nationals due to back soreness.

It doesn't sound like a major concern, but the Nationals will have to manage him down the stretch. Michael Taylor is starting in center field against the Padres.

Adam Jones left Thursday's game against the Royals with an apparent injury.

Jones ran into the center field fence trying to track down a ball off the bat of Ben Zobrist in the first inning. He remained in the game initially, but Paul Janish replaced him as a pinch-hitter in the third. The O's should pass along an update soon.

Marlins manager Dan Jennings said Jose Fernandez (biceps) had a "wow" bullpen session Thursday.

Good news for Fernandez, who landed on the disabled list earlier this month with a right biceps strain. There's no sense of urgency to rush him back into action, but the hope is that he'll be ready to rejoin the Marlins' rotation by mid-September.
Aug 27 - 4:31 PM

Christian Yelich is out of Thursday's lineup against the Pirates with a bruised knee.

Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald notes that he's not even taking batting practice, so this situation is worth watching. Derek Dietrich will start in left field while Ichiro Suzuki will play right.
Aug 27 - 4:16 PM

Adrian Gonzalez (knee) said he's "100 percent" certain he'll be able to play Friday.

Gonzalez made an early exit from Thursday's series finale in Cincinnati after fouling a ball off his left knee, but he only suffered a small bruise. Los Angeles opens a big weekend series against the Cubs on Friday night.

Matt Shoemaker was fantastic in his return to the Angels rotation on Wednesday, allowing just one hit over 7 1/3 innings in a 2-0 win over the Tigers.

Shoemaker was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on August 16, but he rejoined the rotation on Thursday to pitch his best game of the season. The 28-year-old right-hander struck out five and walked one, with only an Anthony Gose single registering for a hit over his 7 1/3 innings of work. Don't expect these kinds of starts on a regular basis, but Shoemaker can be used as a match-up play in select situations. He takes a 4.48 ERA and 1.24 WHIP into his next start, a road showdown with the A's.

James Loney has dropped the appeal of his one-game suspension and will serve it Thursday night.

Loney was issued the punishment for making contact with home plate umpire Paul Nauert on Saturday after a called third strike. He probably wouldn't have been in the lineup anyway Thursday versus Twins lefty Tom Milone.

David Wright is back in the Mets' starting lineup, batting cleanup and playing third base, Thursday night against the Phillies.

Wright was given the night off Wednesday, but he is expected to start the Mets' next three games. The veteran third baseman homered Monday in his first game since April 14 and looks capable of providing significant fantasy value in the middle of an energized Mets lineup.
Aug 27 - 3:43 PM

Zack Greinke poured in a strong start in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Reds, tossing seven shutout innings.

Greinke scattered four hits while striking out nine and walking two. None of the hits went for extra-bases. With his strong seven innings, he improved to 14-3 on the season. He backs that record with a 1.61 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 164/31 K/BB ratio across 179 1/3 innings. A home start against the in-state rival Giants crops up next on Greinke's schedule.
Aug 27 - 3:39 PM

Rays placed OF Desmond Jennings on the 15-day disabled list with a left knee bruise.

Jennings banged his surgically-repaired knee on a slide into second base over the weekend and hasn't felt right since. We might not see him again this season. Jennings, 28, will be arbitration eligible for the second time this winter after earning $3.1 million in 2015. He has appeared in only 28 games.
Aug 27 - 3:29 PM

Jung Ho Kang is out of the Pirates' lineup Thursday.

Kang was also given a day off Tuesday. He's been worked hard in his first major league season and Jordy Mercer is back from his knee injury to take some of the reps at shortstop. Mercer will start there and bat eighth versus Miami on Thursday evening.
