CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Yankees have signed Brennan Boesch.

He'll receive $1.5 million on a major league deal and could earn more with incentives. It was a logical fit from the moment Boesch was released by the Tigers earlier this week. He figures to get playing time in left field, which frees up Juan Rivera to platoon at first base if the Yankees can't find better options. The 27-year-old batted just .240/.286/.372 with 12 home runs and a .659 OPS in 132 games last season.

Nationals signed RHP Kevin Jepsen to a minor league contract.

Jepsen threw for teams earlier this month in Arizona and apparently the Nats liked what they saw. The 32-year-old right-hander was released by the Diamondbacks at the end of spring training after posting a 12.27 ERA in the Cactus League while fighting a quad injury. He put up a 5.98 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 49 2/3 innings last season between the Twins and Rays. Jepsen will be stationed at Triple-A Syracuse with a July 26 opt-out clause in his non-guaranteed minor league deal.

Yonder Alonso (knee) is not in the Athletics' starting lineup Thursday in Houston.

Alonso was removed from Wednesday night's loss to the Astros after fouling a ball off his right knee in the top of the eighth inning, but he only suffered a contusion and should be ready to rock following one day of rest. Matt Olson is starting at first base and batting sixth for the A's on Thursday afternoon against Astros right-hander Brad Peacock.

Josh Norris of Baseball America reports the Yankees are promoting prospect Dustin Fowler from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

And he figures to see a good amount of playing time right out of the gate with recent callup Tyler Austin battling a hamstring injury. The 22-year-old Fowler was sporting an .857 OPS with 12 home runs, 42 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and 48 runs scored through 69 games this season at the Triple-A level. He carries some deep-league fantasy appeal, though it might not be a very long stay.

Rangers activated RHP Andrew Cashner from the 10-day disabled list.

Cashner will return to the Rangers' rotation Thursday afternoon against the Indians after missing a little under two weeks with a left oblique strain. The 30-year-old right-hander has registered a so-so 3.50 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 33/31 K/BB ratio in 69 1/3 innings (12 starts) this season for Texas.
Jun 29 - 9:21 AM

Carlos Gomez (back) is in the Rangers' starting lineup on Thursday afternoon against the Indians.

He will start in center field and bat sixth versus Cleveland right-hander Corey Kluber after missing a couple of games with a sore back. Gomez has a cool .826 OPS with 10 home runs, six stolen bases, and 30 runs scored in 49 games this season for Texas.
Jun 29 - 9:15 AM

Addison Russell (shoulder) could return to the Cubs' starting lineup Thursday.

Russell hasn't started a game since exiting Sunday's series finale against the Marlins with right shoulder discomfort, but he did pinch-hit on Monday and Tuesday. It's clearly not an overly serious injury. Cubs manager Joe Maddon needs Russell active now more than ever with Kris Bryant (ankle) and Ben Zobrist (wrist) both sidelined.

Tyler Austin will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring.

Austin initially injured the hamstring down at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and it has worsened since his promotion to the MLB level. Yankees manager Joe Girardi acknowledged Wednesday that this could be a situation that requires a 10-day disabled list stint. Dustin Fowler may be on the way up from the minors to help out at first base.
Jun 29 - 4:55 AM

Avisail Garcia is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his left knee Thursday morning.

Garcia left Wednesday night's game against the Yankees after landing awkwardly while sliding back into first base on a pickoff attempt. He said after the game that he doesn't think it's anything serious, but the White Sox want to be sure. "I got a little bit hurt, but I’m fine," the 26-year-old outfielder told reporters late Wednesday.
Jun 29 - 4:50 AM

Trevor Rosenthal got the call over Seung-Hwan Oh in the ninth Wednesday and picked up a save despite giving up a run against the Diamondbacks.

Oh was available tonight; he was up earlier in the contest and told to get up again after Rosenthal allowed a single and a walk in the ninth. Still, Mike Matheny stuck with Rosenthal, and Rosenthal ended up escaping his jam despite two walks and two wild pitches. It certainly didn't instill us with any additional confidence in him. Still, he needs to be picked up in mixed leagues in case this is how Matheny wants to continue to play it.
Jun 29 - 1:02 AM

Steven Matz shut out the Marlins for seven innings to lead his club to an 8-0 victory on Wednesday.

He surrendered six base hits -- all singles -- and issued one free pass while striking out four batters in the gem performance. Matz missed the first two months of the season with an elbow injury and has stopped throwing his slider in an effort to stay healthy. He didn't need that pitch today. He has a sterling 2.67 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 27 innings through four starts.
Jun 29 - 12:28 AM

Stephen Strasburg gave up three runs -- two earned -- and punched out 13 batters in an 8-4 win over the Cubs on Wednesday.

He surrendered a two-run homer to catcher Willson Contreras in the fourth inning, then let in an unearned run in the fifth. Strasburg allowed just four hits and one walk and turned in his fifth double-figure strikeout performance of the season. He improves to 9-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 16 starts.
