Scott Baker woke up with elbow soreness Monday after his Cactus League debut and will undergo an MRI.

Baker had Tommy John surgery last year and the Cubs want to be sure that he didn't aggravate anything. The right-hander is currently aiming to join Chicago's starting rotation in mid-April, but that could change.

Johnny Cueto hung in tough in a low-scoring game against the Marlins on Thursday, limiting the opposition to one run over seven innings en route to his 12th win in the Reds' 3-1 victory.

Cueto was on the hook for a loss going into the seventh inning, but a fielding error by Jordany Valdespin opened up an opportunity for the Reds to tie the game and then take the lead. Cueto allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out nine. He now sports a 2.05 ERA, a 0.92 WHIP, and a 166/43 K/BB ratio. Cueto will take on the Indians in a road start next Tuesday.

Jason Vargas (appendectomy) will rejoin the Royals' rotation on Saturday in Oakland.

Vargas threw 60 pitches in a four-inning simulated game Tuesday, clearing the way for his return. The lefty boasts a 3.31 ERA for the Royals this season but makes for a sketchy fantasy play Saturday given that he'll surely be on a pitch count and will be facing a difficult lineup.
Jul 31 - 10:12 PM

The Athletics are expected to keep Jason Hammel in their rotation over Jesse Chavez.

Hammel has a 9.53 ERA and 2.12 WHIP in four starts with Oakland, but the A's think he's capable of turning things around. Chavez boasts a 3.44 ERA and 119/41 K/BB ratio over 125 2/3 innings this season, but he's struggled in July and could be tiring after years of pitching mostly as a reliever. The 30-year-old is dropped in mixed leagues.
Jul 31 - 10:07 PM

Tyler Skaggs exited Thursday's start against the Orioles with tightness in his left forearm.

The good news is that it doesn't appear to be a serious ailment at the moment. Skaggs should be re-evaluated on Friday before it's determined how much time he'll miss, but the Angels could play it safe and DL him even if it's not a major injury.
Jul 31 - 9:00 PM

Cliff Lee exited Thursday's start against the Nationals with a left flexor pronator strain.

It's the same injury that caused him to miss two months of action earlier this season. Obviously Lee is headed back to the disabled list, and the probability is high that his 2014 campaign is over. The Phillies just have to hope now that he can avoid surgery and return to pitch in 2015. He's owed approximately $45.8 million through the end of next season.
Jul 31 - 8:33 PM

Will Middlebrooks (finger) will be activated from the disabled list prior to Friday's game.

It's been a good last 24 hours for Middlebrooks, as Stephen Drew getting shipped out freed up third base for him again and Shane Victorino's (back) injury created a spot for him on the roster. Though the 25-year-old is batting just .197/.305/.324, he has the pop to help out in deeper leagues now that he has an everyday job back.
Jul 31 - 7:10 PM

Starling Marte (concussion) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday.

Marte went through a full workout Tuesday and appears ready to rejoin the big club now, but the Pirates understandably want to play it cautiously. The outfielder will play four games for Indy before being activated early next week if all goes well.

Rays acquired LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames from the Tigers in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to Detroit.

Smyly isn't Price, but he's only 25, is under team control for four more seasons, and should remain a solid mid-rotation starter throughout that time. The left-hander is 6-9 with a 3.77 ERA, and has logged a career 3.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 275-plus innings. He teams with Chris Archer, Alex Cobb, Jake Odorizzi and Jeremy Hellickson to give Tampa Bay an outstanding young rotation under team control for years to come.
Jul 31 - 6:16 PM

Shane Victorino is expected to be placed on the disabled list after aggravating his back injury.

It's not clear when Victorino re-injured his back or how much time he'll miss, but obviously it's discouraging. He just returned from the disabled list less than two weeks ago and will be placed back on it prior to Friday's game. The newly acquired Yoenis Cespedes will assume the majority of the at-bats in right field.
Jul 31 - 6:14 PM

Rays acquired SS Nick Franklin in a three-team trade that sent LHP David Price to the Tigers.

Tampa Bay immediately optioned Franklin to Triple-A. It seems as though Tampa Bay is viewing Franklin as Ben Zobrist 2.0, so it's a little disappointing they couldn't move Ben Zobrist 1.0 today to open a spot in the lineup. The talented 23-year-old raced through the minor leagues -- his time at Low-A Clinton was even chronicled in the 2013 book Class A -- but fell out of favor in Seattle by slashing a rough .214/.291/.358 over 119 games the past two seasons. The former top prospect has destroyed, and continues to destroy, minor league pitching, so this is an interesting gamble by Andrew Friedman.

Tigers acquired LHP David Price in a three-team trade with the Rays and Mariners.

Detroit shipped LHP Drew Smyly and SS Willy Adames to the Rays, and OF Austin Jackson to the Mariners, which sent SS Nick Franklin to Tampa Bay. It's a master stroke by gutsy Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski, who watched rivals arguably overpay for frontline starting pitching throughout the week and then swooped in at the very last second to steal Price for far less than his expected, ahem, price tag. Price now leads a rotation which includes Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Anibal Sanchez and Rick Porcello, and is protected from injury by top prospect Robbie Ray. If Verlander can return to form, Detroit will have a rotation on par with anything we've seen in the last few decades.
