Phil Hughes (back) threw around 40 pitches Monday in a simulated game.

The next step will likely be a minor league game later this week. The Yankees won't need a fifth starter until the second week of the season, so there's still a chance Hughes could be ready by then. He just can't afford any setbacks.

Addison Russell (shoulder) could return to the Cubs' starting lineup Thursday.

Russell hasn't started a game since exiting Sunday's series finale against the Marlins with right shoulder discomfort, but he did pinch-hit on Monday and Tuesday. It's clearly not an overly serious injury. Cubs manager Joe Maddon needs Russell active now more than ever with Kris Bryant (ankle) and Ben Zobrist (wrist) both sidelined.

Yonder Alonso (knee) said late Wednesday that he could be ready to play Thursday.

Alonso was removed from Wednesday night's loss to the Astros after fouling a ball off his right knee in the eighth inning and he looked to be in a good amount of pain as he limped off the field, but the 30-year-old slugger escaped with a minor contusion. Consider him day-to-day.

Tyler Austin will undergo an MRI on his right hamstring.

Austin initially injured the hamstring down at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and it has worsened since his promotion to the MLB level. Yankees manager Joe Girardi acknowledged Wednesday that this could be a situation that requires a 10-day disabled list stint. Dustin Fowler may be on the way up from the minors to help out at first base.

Avisail Garcia is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his left knee Thursday morning.

Garcia left Wednesday night's game against the Yankees after landing awkwardly while sliding back into first base on a pickoff attempt. He said after the game that he doesn't think it's anything serious, but the White Sox want to be sure. "I got a little bit hurt, but I’m fine," the 26-year-old outfielder told reporters late Wednesday.

Trevor Rosenthal got the call over Seung-Hwan Oh in the ninth Wednesday and picked up a save despite giving up a run against the Diamondbacks.

Oh was available tonight; he was up earlier in the contest and told to get up again after Rosenthal allowed a single and a walk in the ninth. Still, Mike Matheny stuck with Rosenthal, and Rosenthal ended up escaping his jam despite two walks and two wild pitches. It certainly didn't instill us with any additional confidence in him. Still, he needs to be picked up in mixed leagues in case this is how Matheny wants to continue to play it.

Steven Matz shut out the Marlins for seven innings to lead his club to an 8-0 victory on Wednesday.

He surrendered six base hits -- all singles -- and issued one free pass while striking out four batters in the gem performance. Matz missed the first two months of the season with an elbow injury and has stopped throwing his slider in an effort to stay healthy. He didn't need that pitch today. He has a sterling 2.67 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 27 innings through four starts.
Jun 29 - 12:28 AM

Stephen Strasburg gave up three runs -- two earned -- and punched out 13 batters in an 8-4 win over the Cubs on Wednesday.

He surrendered a two-run homer to catcher Willson Contreras in the fourth inning, then let in an unearned run in the fifth. Strasburg allowed just four hits and one walk and turned in his fifth double-figure strikeout performance of the season. He improves to 9-2 with a 3.51 ERA in 16 starts.
Jun 28 - 11:59 PM

John Lackey was shelled for eight runs in 5 1/3 innings and took a loss to the Nationals on Wednesday.

He gave up nine hits and two walks and managed only two strikeouts. He gave up solo home runs to Anthony Rendon, Matt Wieters and Daniel Murphy. He also walked in a run in the Nationals' four-run second inning. Lackey falls to 5-9 with a 5.24 ERA after 16 starts. The 38-year-old has been markedly less effective this year than he was the last several seasons. His velocity has declined but the biggest culprit has been the longball -- he has surrendered 24 dingers already this year. He has given up more than that in a full season just three times in his 16-year career.
Jun 28 - 11:34 PM

Marcus Stroman hurled 7 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to beat the Orioles 4-0 on Wednesday.

He punched out eight batters and walked just one. He surrendered five base hits -- all singles -- and took advantage of an early lead to cruise through the game without much of a challenge. His record improves to 8-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 16 starts. He has 84 strikeouts and 24 walks in 100 1/3 innings of work.
Jun 28 - 10:11 PM

Kris Bryant left Wednesday's game against the Nationals due to what the Cubs are terming a "mild-to-moderate" right ankle sprain.

Bryant rolled his ankle when he stepped on third base after catching a routine pop up in the fifth inning. A subsequent X-ray came back negative for structural damage. The Cubs have not yet determined whether the reigning NL MVP will require a stay on the disabled list. He will be reevaluated on Thursday.
Jun 28 - 10:10 PM

Edwin Diaz blew his third game of the season by allowing two runs in the ninth inning of Wednesday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies.

Diaz came on with the Mariners clinging to a 4-3 lead. That would not last for long, as he coughed up a solo homer to Tommy Joseph to lead off the ninth inning. Following a pair of strikeouts, Diaz walked Cameron Perkins, balked him over to second and then surrendered a go-ahead RBI single to Andrew Knapp. Diaz has allowed six runs in his last 1 1/3 innings, but after the game, manager Scott Servais said that he would remain at closer moving forward.
