Nick Markakis (neck) hopes to resume baseball activities by Friday or Saturday.

Markakis was diagnosed with a slightly herniated disk in his neck last week. He's expected to meet with a doctor this week, after which he could be cleared to resume baseball activities. He remains optimistic that he'll be ready for the season, though there's a chance the Orioles could play things safe.

Free agent OF Torii Hunter told the Pioneer Press that he and the Twins had a "common interest" in possible return.

"I came there as a young boy and came out a man. I always hold true to Minnesota Twins values I was taught," said Hunter. His other suitors include the Royals, Orioles, Giants and Blue Jays. Hunter isn't quite the defender he used to be, but he put up a .286/.319/.446 line in 2014, hitting 17 home runs and driving in 83 over 142 games at age 39. He indicated he would make a decision about his landing spot within the next few weeks.

Ken Davidoff of the New York Post reports the Astros have contacted the agent for David Robertson to express their interest in the free agent closer.

MLB.com's Brian McTaggart previously reported the Astros were aggressively seeking a top closer, so it makes sense that they would be interested in Robertson. The 29-year-old is said to be looking for a contract along the lines of what Jonathan Papelbon got from the Phillies, so if the Astros are willing to pony up the two could be a match. A return to the Yankees is also a strong possibility, and as many as a half-dozen teams have reached out to express their interest in the right-hander.

The Giants are "expected to make a serious bid on Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas" if Pablo Sandoval signs elsewhere, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

With the Padres reportedly having made the biggest offer to Sandoval and the Red Sox believed to be his preference at the moment, things don't look promising for a Sandoval return to San Francisco. In that event, Shea said the club will turn its focus to the 24-year-old Tomas. They wouldn't be the only team interested, either -- Tomas has suitors in the Padres, Braves and Phillies, among others.

John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle hears the Padres' offer to Pablo Sandoval is the highest the free agent has received thus far.

The Padres were believed to have made the offer Friday. Shea also said he believes that despite the large offer, Sandoval is still leaning toward signing with the Red Sox. The Giants have been asked to make their best offer to the third baseman recently as well, suggesting things may be moving toward a conclusion. Multiple sources say a decision is expected within the next week.

Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have won the bidding on Korean southpaw Hyeon-jong Yang.

No word yet on what the winning bid amount was, but it's believed to be far less than the Kia Tigers were hoping for when posting Yang. The Twins now have an exclusive 30-day window to negotiate a contract with Yang, and Berardino reports that the two sides are already closing in on a deal.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that the White Sox and Adam LaRoche have agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract.

With Jose Abreu entrenched as the team's first baseman, it's likely that LaRoche will see most of his time in the DH role in the White Sox lineup. The 35-year-old slugger slashed .259/.362/.455 with 26 homers and 92 RBI in 140 games with the Nationals in 2014 and should see increased power numbers with the move to the hitter-friendly confines of U.S. Cellular Field.

The Rays have narrowed down their managerial search to three finalists: Kevin Cash, Raul Ibanez and Don Wakamatsu.

Wakamatsu is the only one of the trio who has previous experience as a major league manager. The surprise in this announcement, is that bench coach Dave Martinez, who was widely considered to be the favorite for the gig, wasn't even among the finalists.

Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Dodgers are drawing significant trade interest in outfielder Matt Kemp.

While the Dodgers would much rather prefer to trade Carl Crawford or Andre Ethier to free up the logjam in their outfield, they would certainly get a much better return package if unloading Kemp. They would also be free of the five years and $107 million remaining on Kemp's contract through 2019, which would allow them to be even more aggressive on the free agent market. If Kemp is indeed dealt, Joc Pederson could take over the reins in center field.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that it's "increasingly likely" Andrew Miller will get a four-year contract.

Morosi says that Miller "already has multiple offers of at least three years," so it appears a team might have to guarantee a fourth year to push them over the top. He also notes that Miller is expected to eclipse the previous high-water mark for a reliever with no closing experience, which currently sits at $6 million per season. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported last week that Miller was receiving interest from 22 teams.

FOX Sports' Jon Morosi reports that the Rays have made Matt Joyce available for trade.

It's not surprising, as the Rays are in cost-cutting mode and Joyce is due another raise in what will be his final year of arbitration. The 30-year-old's OPS has been in a steady decline the last few years, bottoming out in 2014 at .732 when he hit just nine homers. Still, he can be a useful bat and the Rays should be able to find a taker for him.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post was told by an executive that Justin Upton "will be moved" this offseason.

The Braves dealt Jason Heyward earlier this week, but they don't plan to stop there. Like Heyward, Upton is set for free agency after next season, and the interest in him, according to Sherman, is "significant." Sherman adds that the price is steep, with the Braves looking for a bigger package than it took to land Heyward. The Mariners have long had interest in Upton and would appear to be a fit.
