Tigers optioned LHP Duane Below, RHP Jose Ortega and C Bryan Holaday to Triple-A Toledo; optioned INF Hernan Perez to Double-A Erie.

Below was in the mix for a roster spot this spring as a long reliever, but he really struggled during Grapefruit League play, allowing 11 runs on 14 hits and three walks over eight innings. He'll have to earn his way back into the Tigers' good graces.

Scott Van Slyke left Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks with a right ankle injury.

Van Slyke was chasing a ball in the gap and rolled his ankle when planting. The outfielder was able to walk off under his own power. He had homered in the game before leaving. Carl Crawford replaced him in left field.

David Price was chased from Wednesday's start with no outs in the third inning, allowing eight runs, in a loss to the Yankees.

It was a nightmare for Price in the third inning, as he allowed nine consecutive hits to the Yankees in an eight-run frame. Overall, Price yielded 12 hits and a walk while punching out three. Though he was booed by the home crowd, Price has otherwise pitched well for the Tigers since joining the team at the trade deadline, but Wednesday's outing bumps his Tigers ERA up to 4.41. Price will try to bounce back on Monday in Cleveland against the Indians.

Yadier Molina caught six innings and went 2-for-3 with a double in his first rehab start with Double-A Springfield on Wednesday.

Molina has made incredible progress from the torn ligament in his right thumb, and despite Wednesday being his first game action the Cardinals are optimistic about his ability to return to the big club shortly. Molina could be back in St. Louis by Friday at the earliest.

Jorge Soler homered in his first major league plate appearance and added an RBI single later, finishing 2-for-4 overall, as the Cubs were defeated by the Reds on Wednesday.

Soler took Mat Latos out to center field for a no-doubt home run, starting off his big league career in fashion. The Cubs have been ushering in the youth movement and Soler is the latest part of that. The 22-year-old should get regular playing time in right field through the end of the season.

Julio Teheran earned his 13th win of the season after holding the Mets to one run in 6 1/3 innings of work on Wednesday.

Neither side had much going for them offensively, though Teheran was helped by a pair of spectacular Andrelton Simmons defensive plays, including one to finish the bottom of the eighth inning which saved a run. Teheran allowed just three hits and a pair of walks while striking out four. He owns a 2.90 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and a 116/52 K/BB ratio. Teheran will look for his 14th win on Monday at home against the Phillies.
Aug 27 - 10:10 PM

Drew Smyly continued his excellence on Wednesday, limiting the Orioles to one run over seven innings of work en route to a win.

Smyly was coming off of a complete game shutout against the Blue Jays on Friday and kept the train rolling with a dominant outing, holding the O's to just two hits and a walk while striking out six. Since joining the Rays, Smyly has a 1.50 ERA and a 29/7 K/BB ratio. The lefty will try to keep the good times rolling when he takes on the Red Sox at home on Monday.

The deadline for the Tigers to work out a trade for Astros reliever Chad Qualls passed without a deal Wednesday.

The deadline passing means Qualls won't be dealt this season. That's good news for fantasy owners, as the right-hander would likely have been a setup man for Joe Nathan in Detroit a la Joakim Soria. Qualls earned his 15th save of the season on Tuesday, and the 36-year-old has a 3.05 ERA on the year.

R.A. Dickey was placed on revocable waivers by the Blue Jays on August 25, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

The Jays placed a bunch of players on waivers, which is pretty standard procedure for teams in August. It will soon be known whether he cleared waivers or was claimed by a team. Dickey is owed $12 million in 2015 with a $12 million club option for 2016. The knuckleballer is 10-12 with a 4.00 ERA this season.

Adrian Gonzalez is not in the Dodgers' lineup Wednesday due to back stiffness.

The back hasn't really been an issue to this point, so unless it progresses into something more it's likely not something that will give him problems going forward. Justin Turner started at first base in Gonzalez' place.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports the Blue Jays have placed Mark Buehrle on revocable waivers.

Buehrle is owed $19 million in the final year of his deal in 2015, so interest in the 35-year-old may be hard to come by. The Angels, a team in serious need of another starter after Garrett Richards' injury, could be interested. Buehrle started the year strong and is 11-8 with a 3.41 ERA through 26 starts.

MLB Network's Peter Gammons said the Dodgers' interest in Bartolo Colon "apparently is more fiction than non-fiction."

The Dodgers have continually been included in the Colon trade rumors after he passed through waivers a few days ago. It makes sense that they wouldn't have a ton of interest, though, with both Zack Greinke and Hyun-Jin Ryu trending in the right direction. The Angels appear to be the lone serious suitor for Colon at this point.
