Scott Baker (elbow) has been shut down from throwing.

Baker felt some soreness in his surgically-repaired right elbow after his Cactus League debut on Sunday and was diagnosed with inflammation following an MRI. The Cubs were hoping that he would be ready to join the rotation at some point in April, but his return date is officially up in the air.

Jason Heyward (wrist) is out of the starting lineup again on Tuesday against the Pirates.

The struggling Heyward is dealing with a sore right wrist, but hopes to return as soon as Wednesday. Kris Bryant will play right field Tuesday while Jorge Soler will start in left and bat second. Javier Baez will play third base.

Tigers activated C James McCann from the 15-day disabled list.

McCann, out since April 11 with a sprained ankle, went 2-for-15 with two RBI during a minor league rehab stint. Jarrod Saltalamacchia has swung the bat well during his absence, but he'll presumably shift into a diminished role now that McCann is healthy.

Red Sox activated RHP Carson Smith from the 15-day disabled list.

Smith, who began the season on the disabled list with a strained flexor tendon, was cleared to join the Red Sox after making it through two minor league rehab games. The 26-year-old was acquired from the Mariners over the winter and is capable of being a dominant set-up man if healthy.

Pablo Sandoval needs reconstructive surgery on his left shoulder, per ESPN's Buster Olney.

Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe reported Monday night that the surgery is "significant" and the odds are against Sandoval playing this season, so Olney's report appears to jibe with that. The 29-year-old has received all sorts of criticism for his level of fitness, but his situation is much more complicated. The big question is what sort of future Sandoval has in Boston. He still has three guaranteed years (and $58 million) on his contract. The Red Sox will have the DH spot open after David Ortiz retires, so that could be where Sandoval slots in if healthy in 2017. A change of scenery might be the best for all involved, but the Red Sox would have to pick up most of his remaining contract for anyone to take a chance on him.
May 3 - 8:52 AM

Danny Valencia (hamstring) went 0-for-3 on Monday in his first minor league rehab game with High-A Stockton.

Valencia, out since April 20 with a left hamstring strain, also played seven innings at third base. He's expected to be activated when he's first eligible on Friday. Valencia was batting .294/.345/.353 over 14 games prior to the injury.
May 3 - 8:29 AM

Twins activated 3B Trevor Plouffe from the 15-day disabled list.

Plouffe, out since April 17 with a right intercostal strain, was cleared to return after playing a pair of minor league rehab games. Eduardo Nunez has swung the bat well while filling in at third base, but he's now likely headed back to a bench role.

Jose Berrios won for the first time in the majors after allowing two runs in 5 1/3 innings Monday against the Astros.

Berrios issued five walks to go along with the two homers he allowed, but the homers came with the bases empty. It's still not ideal that he threw just 54 strikes among his 96 pitches, but his stuff is good enough that he'll be able to get away with that kind of thing sometimes. He struck out eight of the 23 batters he faced tonight.

Kolten Wong finally notched his first extra-base hit of the season Monday, smacking a two-run homer in Monday's win over the Phillies.

Wong looked awful in striking out in his first two plate appearances, but he scorched the ball on a lineout to center field in his third at-bat and then went deep in his fourth trip to the dish. He's got an ugly .233/.304/.283 batting line on the season, but perhaps this will get Wong going.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said after Monday's game that Ryan Braun is dealing with "general soreness."

It doesn't sound like a major concern, but Braun is not a sure thing to play Tuesday. The 32-year-old went 3-for-3 on Monday against the Angels and is batting .372/.443/.605 overall this season.

Brandon Crawford's three-run homer in the seventh inning propelled the Giants to a comeback win over the Reds on Monday.

The Reds tagged Johnny Cueto for six runs in the third inning, but then the Big Dread Machine known as the Reds bullpen went to work. JC Ramirez and Drew Hayes were lit up for six runs over their two innings, highlighted by Crawford's bomb. The Giants shortstop also tacked on an RBI single in the ninth. Crawford is hitting .253/.343/.414 with three homers and 10 RBI.
May 2 - 11:04 PM

Joey Votto launched a three-run homer in Monday's loss to the Giants.

Votto took former teammate Johnny Cueto deep in the middle of a six-run third inning for the Reds before the club watched their horrid bullpen inevitably cough up the lead. It was the first baseman's lone hit on the night in four trips to the plate, but he'll take it given his struggles so far this season.
