Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said that the cortisone shot Shaun Marcum received for his right shoulder Tuesday was "largely precautionary."

Alderson added that, at this point, he isn't expecting the right-hander to need a stint on the disabled list. It sounds like it was a maintenance shot more than Marcum having a setback, as the righty has dealt with shoulder issues off and on over the past couple seasons, including earlier this spring. Marcum isn't a great bet to stay healthy for the duration of the 2013 campaign.

Tuffy Gosewisch has been diagnosed with a full tear of his left ACL.

Gosewisch will undergo season-ending surgery soon. It's a real bummer for a 31-year-old who was getting his first shot at a starting job in the big leagues. Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the Diamondbacks' new starting catcher.

Adrian Gonzalez had a perfect night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a walk and a pair of doubles as the Dodgers routed the Rockies on Monday.

In one night, Gonzalez exceeded the amount of hits he had accrued in his previous five ballgames. Despite reaching base five times, the Dodgers -- who scored 11 runs -- only brought him home once, in the eighth inning. The effort brings Gonzalez's OPS back up over 1.000. He has a .339/.415/.611 triple-slash line with 10 home runs and 35 RBI.

Carlos Gomez went 2-for-4 with an RBI single, providing the Brewers their only run as they staved off the Cardinals on Monday.

Gomez brought Jean Segura home on an RBI single in the first inning against Jaime Garcia. The two teams would exchange goose-eggs the rest of the way. Gomez is on a five-game hitting streak and now carries a .264/.309/.457 triple-slash line with five home runs, 21 RBI, and five stolen bases.

Luis Valbuena went 2-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Monday's victory over the Orioles.

Valbuena tied the game up in the fifth inning with a solo home run off of Ubaldo Jimenez. He also scored the go-ahead run in a four-run seventh inning. 10 of Valbuena's 11 home runs this season have been of the solo variety. Along with 19 RBI, he's hitting .196/.260/.413.

Marlins optioned RHP Steve Cishek to Double-A Jacksonville.

It's been a stunning fall for a guy who has been one of the better relievers in the National League over the previous four season. Sending Cishek down to work on his mechanics in a less pressurized situation could be the best thing, though. Cishek has been better of late after being removed from the closer role, but he still holds an ugly 6.98 ERA and 1.86 WHIP with 10 walks over 19 1/3 innings.
Jun 1 - 10:39 PM

Jason Hammel struck out 11 batters and allowed only one run in 6 2/3 innings of work en route to a win against the Marlins on Monday.

11 punch-outs marks a career-high for Hammel. He had previously struck out 10 batters on three occasions, last occuring in June 2012. The Marlins' only run came home in the third inning when Giancarlo Stanton stole third base and scored on catcher Miguel Montero's throwing error. Hammel surrendered only five hits in total while walking none. He boasts a sterling 2.82 ERA with a 0.90 WHIP and a 69/7 K/BB ratio over 67 innings this season. He'll look to keep it going in a weekend road start versus the Nationals.

Desmond Jennings (knee) had a few at-bats in an extended spring training game Monday.

It's his first game action since he landed on the disabled list in late April with left knee bursitis. The bad news is that Rays manager Kevin Cash said Jennings "still felt something" in his knee during the game. It's unclear whether he'll continue to keep playing in extended spring or if the Rays will pump the breaks a bit. Jennings has been out since late April.

Matt Moore (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with High-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

Moore was cleared for official game work after getting through a 46-pitch extended spring appearance last Thursday. He's slated to make 5-6 rehab starts, putting him on track to return possibly before the end of the month. The left-hander is worth stashing away now if you have space on your roster.
Jun 1 - 8:14 PM

Travis d'Arnaud (finger) could resume his rehab assignment later this week.

D'Arnaud had been slated to return this week after missing over a month with a fractured right pinkie finger, but he had a setback last week with a bone bruise in his wrist. It sounds like the setback was minor, though, so the young catcher could be back in the Mets' lineup before long.
Jun 1 - 7:44 PM

Cameron Maybin was scratched from Monday's lineup due to a might quad/groin injury.

Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said that Maybin is available to pinch-hit and he expects the outfielder to return to the lineup Tuesday. Maybin batted .290/.371/.409 with two homers, 17 RBI and five steals in May.
Jun 1 - 7:39 PM

Wil Myers (wrist) could take batting practice on the field Wednesday.

Myers took swings off a tee on Saturday with no issues and is ready to take the next step. He's been on the shelf for three weeks with tendinitis in his left wrist but appears to finally be making strides. A rehab assignment can't be far off as long as he can avoid a setback.
