Padres manager Bud Black said it will be a "close call" as to whether or not Andrew Cashner (thumb) will be ready for the start of the season.

Cashner's thumb doesn't bother him anymore, and he's looked good this spring, but he might not have built up enough stamina by the time Opening Day arrives. It might make sense to play it safe and hold him out until mid-April. The hard-throwing right-hander has plenty of fantasy upside if he can stay healthy.

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan writes that Delino DeShields could be the Rangers' everyday left fielder and leadoff man.

DeShields has batted .302/.448/.321 with 12 steals this spring, which might have been enough to push Jurickson Profar back into a utility role and Carlos Gomez down in the order. "I tell guys, make me put you in the lineup," manager Jeff Banister said. "Let your game put you in the lineup. Delino has made us do that. How it plays on Opening Day or the day after that … just continue to play the game." DeShields entered 2016 as the Opening Day center fielder and leadoff man, but he lost those jobs quickly and ultimately hit .209/.275/.313. However, the 24-year-old had a good rookie season and could make a dent in fantasy leagues with his on-base skills and running ability.

Tyler Thornburg has been diagnosed with a right shoulder impingement and will be shut down from throwing for 10 days.

He'll be re-evaluated after that, but it's an injury that figures to keep Thornburg on the shelf for a while even if all goes well from here on out. Acquired via trade from the Brewers over the winter, Thornburg had been in line to be the club's Opening Day setup man. However, he was limited to just two appearances this spring due to a "dead arm" and now the shoulder issue.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that he hasn't decided yet whether Aaron Judge or Aaron Hicks will be the starter in right field.

Judge entered spring training as the presumed favorite and has batted .321/.390/.509 with two homers and a solid 12/6 K/BB ratio over 53 at-bats. If that's not enough to win the job, then perhaps the intention all along was to send him back to Triple-A for more seasoning. Hicks has also had a nice spring with a .286/.375/.571 line and three longballs. Worth noting is that Hicks is in the Yanks' Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday and Girardi said it could be similar to the one he'll use Opening Day.

Lorenzo Cain was scratched from Tuesday's Cactus League game against the White Sox due to tightness in his left side.

Alex Gordon will take his place in center field with Brandon Moss handling left. Cain felt tightness during batting practice and was scratched as a precaution. Until the Royals update his status, consider Cain day-to-day.

Raisel Iglesias (elbow, hips) threw a side session without issue on Tuesday.

MLB.com's Mark Sheldon reports that Iglesias will break camp with the team. Iglesias slipped in the shower a few weeks ago, injuring his right elbow as well as both of his hips. The Reds haven't announced a closer but Iglesias is the favorite for the majority of ninth-inning work out of the gate.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said he hasn't considered placing Addison Russell (back) on the disabled list.

"I'm certain he's going to be fine," said Maddon. Russell has missed the past week with back soreness but is on the mend and could return to game action before the end of spring training. Among major league shortstops, only Carlos Correa drove in more runs than Russell last season.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports expects Yadier Molina's extension with the Cardinals to be for three years and around $45-55 million.

The two sides have been making "progress" on a new deal and it looks like this could come together quickly. Per Rosenthal, Molina is reluctant to uproot his family and prefers to finish out his career in St. Louis. The implication is that Molina would take less than his market value to remain a Cardinal. He's due $14 million this year and $15 million in 2018 if the Cardinals pick up his club option.

Ervin Santana has been announced as the Twins' Opening Day starter.

As expected. Santana will get the ball at home against Kansas City on April 3. He'll be followed in the rotation by Hector Santiago and Kyle Gibson. Last year Santana was a bright spot in an otherwise dreary season for the Twins, contributing a 3.38 ERA over 30 starts.

A.J. Pierzynski is joining Fox Sports as a full-time analyst.

That means Pierzynski's 19-year career in the big leagues is officially over. The 40-year-old had a tendency to rub people the wrong way with his brash personality (a fact he readily admits) but was a productive hitter throughout his career, batting .280 with 188 homers over 7,290 major league at-bats for seven different clubs. Pierzynski made two All-Star appearances and won a World Series with the White Sox in 2005. He's been a part of Fox's postseason coverage for several years.

Julio Urias will not be on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster.

Urias is starting on Tuesday and will remain with the Dodgers for their upcoming freeway series against the Angeles. The young left-hander will bide his time in the minors until a spot opens up for him in the starting rotation. It's possible he could open the year in extended spring training after logging just 5 2/3 innings in the Cactus League this spring.

Reds claimed 2B Scooter Gennett off waivers from the Brewers.

The Brewers decided they didn't need Gennett anymore with Jonathan Villar moving to second base full time this year. The 26-year-old will give the Reds some infield depth behind starters Zack Cozart, Eugenio Suarez and Jose Peraza and could see time in the outfield as well. Gennett set career-highs with 14 homers, 56 RBI and eight steals last season.
