Twins optioned OF Joe Benson to Triple-A Rochester.

Benson was competing for the center field job this spring but batted just .154/.267/.288 over 17 games. The gig is expected to go to Aaron Hicks. The twins also reassigned Luis Perdomo to minor league camp.

Anibal Sanchez (shoulder) played catch on Tuesday.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus noted that Sanchez wasn't in any pain, but his throwing session was just "OK." There remains no timetable for Sanchez's return to the rotation, but this is the first step. He's been on the shelf since mid-August with a right rotator cuff strain.
Sep 1 - 6:38 PM

Twins manager Paul Molitor said Tuesday that Jose Berrios could still be called up.

But the Minnesota skipper wouldn't offer anything concrete about the situation. Berrios wasn't included in the Twins' initial round of September callups despite boasting a 2.67 ERA, 1.098 WHIP, and 78/13 K/BB ratio in 70 1/3 innings (11 starts) this season at Triple-A. Molitor noted that the club is worried about Berrios' workload and wary of using the 21-year-old right-hander in relief.
Sep 1 - 5:36 PM

Andrelton Simmons (ankle) is considered day-to-day.

Simmons was a late scratch Monday and is out of the Braves' lineup again on Tuesday due to inflammation in his right ankle. It sounds like he'll be ready later this week. Daniel Castro is starting at shortstop Tuesday.
Sep 1 - 5:19 PM

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that an MRI on Mark Teixeira's injured right shin showed "more than we thought."

Teixeira will be on crutches for the next couple of days and could miss the next couple of weeks. Greg Bird is getting another start at first base on Tuesday night against Red Sox right-hander Rick Porcello. Alex Rodriguez could see starts at first versus lefties.
Sep 1 - 5:04 PM

Mike Moustakas is out of the Royals' lineup on Tuesday due to a hamstring injury.

It's thought to be a minor issue, with Royals manager Ned Yost telling reporters that Moustakas could be back in action within a day or two. Ben Zobrist is getting the nod at third base Tuesday versus the Tigers.
Sep 1 - 5:00 PM

Hanley Ramirez won't play the outfield again this season.

Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo made that announcement Tuesday. It's a non-issue right now with Hanley still sidelined by a sore right shoulder, but Lovullo just wanted to lay out that he's committed to Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Rusney Castillo as Boston's starting outfield. Hanley could get some starts at first base down the stretch. That's where he'll open the 2016 season.
Sep 1 - 4:56 PM

Cubs activated RHP Rafael Soriano from the 15-day disabled list; designated him for assignment.

The veteran reliever allowed eight hits and four earned runs in 5 2/3 innings for the Cubs before landing on the disabled list August 4 with right shoulder inflammation. The 35-year-old right-hander will probably take the rest of the summer off and gear up for free agency. He's going to have to settle for another minor league deal this winter.
Sep 1 - 4:51 PM

Javier Baez is starting at second base and batting seventh Tuesday night against the Reds.

It'll be his first game at the major league level this season. Baez was a huge disappointment for the Cubs in 2014, but he has continued to post eye-popping numbers this year in the minors and it looks like he'll have a shot at regular playing time down the stretch if he gets off to a hot start. The 22-year-old should be owned in most mixed leagues.
Sep 1 - 4:48 PM

Alex Rios has been diagnosed with chickenpox and could miss the next two weeks.

Rios came down with the virus over the weekend in Tampa Bay and flew back to Kansas City, where he got an official diagnosis. Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera has also been hit with chickenpox and Kansas City management will have to hope it doesn't spread further. This obviously comes with terrible timing at the tail end of the regular season, but the Royals do have a massive lead in the American League Central.
Sep 1 - 4:42 PM

Christian Yelich (knee, ankle) is back in the Marlins' starting lineup Tuesday against the Braves.

Yelich missed a bit of time with a bruised ankle and knee. He's batting second and starting in left field in his return Tuesday night versus Braves lefty Manny Banuelos.
Sep 1 - 4:29 PM

Steven Matz (lat) will join the Mets' rotation this weekend against the Marlins.

Matz is going to be filling in for Noah Syndergaard, who will skip a turn in the rotation as a way to protect his rookie workload. New York will presumably then shift to a six-starter mix. Matz has been on the disabled list since early July with a partial tear of his left lat muscle. He has a good fantasy matchup in Miami.
